massive dragonfly

This dragonfly hitched a ride on my bike halfway across the city today. I thought he'd landed there and died, until I got where I was headed and tried to take a photo, when he of course immediately took off. I caught him (or identical twin) an hour later on this sign post, once I was done.

Work was interesting, massive dragonflies aside. I saw an asthmatic who's being detained for murder and also got to take his dental impressions - which Sherlock is wild to see, just in case he can see some difference between normal teeth and murderers' teeth. He says he'll need a much larger sample size, so will I please bring home all dental impressions I make (no).

Also a drugs case where I was called in with the hope I'd get permission from a man to do what's rather delicately called an 'intimate search'. He eventually said he'd given it to his six year old son to hold, which is...I don't know what that is. I suppose it could've been worse. In several ways.

Anyway, I was happy to get home - to a lovely dinner cooked by all three of my boys. And now we're watching blood drip off of things at this link L found.

not just drip off things - being wiped on things, coughed out, guns going off...and Sherlock only has another ten mins before bed. So he'd better pick out some interesting ones to watch before bed, and save the rest for tomorrow.

That is an impressive passenger. Did you give it a helmet?

Glad you didn't have to do an intimate search. Although I'm certain you'd be very good at it ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

His face as he tries to choose... I shouldn't laugh.

I thought it was dead, so it wouldn't need one! Little did I know it just wanted to go for a ride.

Glad you didn't have to do an intimate search

Yeah, I was fairly happy about that too.

Greg Lestrade said...

I know it's part of your job...but yeah, I'd rather not think about it! Definitely an instance where I'd rather not know where your fingers have been ;)

I hope it gets back okay...unless you were giving it a lift back. I always wonder about ants and things like that which are accidentally transported for miles...what do they do? Just die a lonely death?

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. I promise not to talk about it in depth. As it were.

I hope I wasn't supposed to give it a lift back...I didn't wait! I suppose ants must just die, yeah. I expect bees can find their way by the sun or something? But ants go by smelling the ants that came before them I think.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, I feel slightly less silly for the guilt I've felt over various ants/insects I've accidentally relocated.

Sherlock announced we were 'oppressing him' when he was sent to bed.

Where does he get it all from??

John H. D. Watson said...

Everywhere. He's like a sponge.

Greg Lestrade said...

I sort of hope he doesn't go around informing other people that we're mean/oppress him/never let him have any fun/don't feed him/whatever other complaint he comes up with, that's all.

You been roped into some sporting activity tomorrow afternoon?

And I heard a rumour regarding cakes...

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh yes. You're baking 'millions' of cakes. You didn't know?

Greg Lestrade said...

..no.

When am I baking these millions of cakes for? And why? Just for Sherlock?

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm sure he'd prefer that, but no. For the school fete on Saturday. Probably millions means two or three.

Greg Lestrade said...

...unless they all eat like Sherlock. In which case it means millions...

Well, I'll ask tomorrow.

Sherlock also said something grumpily in passing about his class doing a dance for an end-of-year show. He didn't sound impressed, so I can only assume it's a dance which doesn't involve mayhem or fireworks or acrobats or wild animals... just kids dancing :)

John H. D. Watson said...

(One should be chocolate. In my opinion.)

Oh, that'll be nice. I'm sure he'd rather it had fire and explosives, but he likes dancing. Hopefully he'll be less grumpy on the day.

Good luck with sports day Sherlock :-)

Have a good day all of you :-)

Small Hobbit said...

Yes, have fun at sports day Sherlock.

Hope you get there in time L. And try not to fall over during the sack race.

I just ate the best cupcake of my life! My friend has started baking cupcakes to sell in the cafe below the apartment complex she lives in - all gluten free, and AMAZING! It was lemon meringue, with a gooey lemon curd blob in the centre. It's a good thing she only gave me the one, I wouldn't trust myself around more! Sherlock, you're so lucky to have Lestrade to make cake for you! Have fun at sports day.

Sherlock said...

He should make those! He has to make lots and some like cupcakes or that will be cut up because it's Ramadan and that means some people can't eat when it's daylight and so they should take cakes home to eat later so they'll want small ones to carry so those ones sound good and anyway he should make them for me to try. I wouldn't want to not eat during daylight but if I did have to I'd want cake at night.

Greg Lestrade said...

Right. Millions of small portable cakes. That's what my evening will be spent doing then!

REReader said...

Do you have observant Muslims in your class, Sherlock?

Have fun at sports day!

Anonymous said...

Even if they don't have observant Muslims (and I think kids sherlocks age aren't required to fast anyway?), I think it's a nice thing to accommodate anyway, or to accommodate without the person having to ask.

We were talking about physical accessibility issues at my Meeting House once, and someone said, "but what's it matter we're not very accessible to people with disabilities? No one who needs the ramp comes to Meeting." Which just led to a long, puzzled "........." from me.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ella - I think you're right about kids not fasting...but someone correct me if I'm wrong! And I'm not sure if Sherlock has any friends who come from Muslim families, but there certainly are in the school.

REReader said...

I wouldn't think young children would need to fast (although that's just a guess), but their parents would, surely, and a school fete sounds like something parents would be invited to.

Although, to be honest, that's not why I asked. I was just curious. From the questions Sherlock has asked me now and then it didn't seem as though he had any Jewish classmates (or none that were observant), and it didn't seem as though Jewish holidays and observances were discussed in school, so I wondered if he had any Muslim classmates, since he knew about Ramadan.

Anonymous said...

Kids want to fast as it's a measure of being 'grown up', so some of them will try quite hard at really quite young ages.

John H. D. Watson said...

L has arrived...he's got a reputation now. Two little girls ran up to him immediately to ask if he brought cake...

REReader said...

Hee!

It's good to be the king... ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I feel bad! I could have bought cake if I'd known. I promised them cake tomorrow, like some sort of dealer...

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock says he has two Muslim classmates. And that I'm rubbish at sack racing.

pandabob said...

Its nice that Sherlock has a mix of classmates :-)

I'm going to guess you didn't win the race Greg but did you at least manage not to bump your nose on the floor? ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Not only did I fall over in a big tangle, but I virtually ended up on the sack with one of the mums! No injuries, but I was laughing too much to do any good afterward.

pandabob said...

Brilliant :-D

I am so glad we don't have adult races at ours!!

REReader said...

That sounds like a race well done to me! (Even if perhaps insufficiently competitive for Sherlock. But winning isn't everything! Fun is important, too. :))

Anonymous said...

Are we going to get to hear the logic that led Sherlock to think you'd be good at sack race? ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I doubt it, now he's been proven wrong!

Some of the kids there seem to think John and I are 'cool', because of the bikes. And they're also awkward kids who don't want to look silly in front of others... So I think it helps when we show making a laughing stock of yourself is fine :). That's my story anyway!

REReader said...

I think that that is perfectly true.

pandabob said...

Its amazing what you can get shy/uncomfortable kids to do if you're willing to make a fool of yourself so I think you are providing a wonderful service for those kids Greg ;-)

Is it ice cream or 3 litres of liquid that is on the menu for sports day recovery time?

Greg Lestrade said...

Both? :)

But I've got to get back and bake!

pandabob said...

yes cinders get back to the kitchen ;-)

both sound good and even more so because the flat will be hot from the oven!!

Greg Lestrade said...

I am sweating...cooking topless. Sherlock is hovering about licking spoons and bowls.

John H. D. Watson said...

A cake dealer's work is never done...

REReader said...

Do you have any ingredients that need smashing?

pandabob said...

and John is hovering licking...? ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha - later, AnonyBob! ;)

No, nothing needs smashing. And things don't need added ingredients, Sherlock! Stop it!

John H. D. Watson said...

I think I'll take the dogs and Sherlock for a walk...

Sherlock said...

I was helping!

I don't know much about Ramadan just you can't eat or drink unless maybe you're ill but even then sometimes people do it. Sometimes children do it too even though you don't have to until you hit puberty like Mycroft and at school they're not meant to but maybe they do at the weekends and Lestrade said it was a bloody nightmare.

If we go for a walk can I have ice cream?

John H. D. Watson said...

Nope, and there's no if, come on. Let's leave Lestrade alone with his batter for a little while.

Sherlock said...

I saw a thing where you get all the dog chew toys and balls and freeze them in a big block of ice and then the dogs attack the ice and get them back and can we do that?

Greg Lestrade said...

Oi, I only said it was a nightmare when my officers are so hungry and thirsty they can't concentrate! Not generally. People are quite free to do as they wish. But when it's this hot, I certainly don't envy anyone not being able to drink.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock - how big a block of ice?

Sherlock said...

BIG! big enough to put toys in but maybe the picture I saw had a small dog it said you had to make it wet or their tongues might freeze onto it like mine does when I lick ice lollies but they're dogs so they might not like that.

John H. D. Watson said...

You can show it to me later, all right? And if we do it...probably not all the toys. They seem to have an awful lot.

Sherlock said...

Okay but they have to want to get them back or they might just wait until it melts and that's not much fun.

Can we go swimming? Can I life save you?

John H. D. Watson said...

You can ask Mycroft if he thinks they'd enjoy it - and which toys to use.

Yes, we can go swimming, sometime this weekend. I...don't know if you can life save me. But I think I'm willing to let you try at least once. Just remember the part about not accidentally strangling your save-ee.

REReader said...

Thank you for the information on Ramadan, Sherlock, that's quite interesting. It sounds a lot like Jewish minor fasts--no eating or drinking, sunrise to full dark--but of course, we only do one-day fasts spread out over the year, not 30 in a row! That would not be fun. And we have only two 25-hour (dusk one day to full dark the next) per year--that's longer, but again, only one day. (We have one of those coming up Monday night to Tuesday night, this coming week.)

If it's hot, the dogs might enjoy chewing a bit of ice, if it's safe. :)

Sherlock said...

Should I practice on Lestrade before I do you because then if I strangle him a bit you can make him better and anyway he was life saved by a cow once and I'll be better than a cow.

John H. D. Watson said...

...He was life saved by a cow? Was this the one he was riding? Did I forget a key part of that story?

Sherlock said...

He was in the pond and it was muddy and maybe he had hypothermia and he rode the cow out so that means the cow life saved him I think even though he started out trying to save the cow!

Can we go home and can I lick the icing bowl if there's icing?

John H. D. Watson said...

I was picturing mouth-to-mouth and feeling very sorry for Lestrade...

Yeah, we can go home, and you should ask L about the bowl. And if he says yes, you should share it with me!

Sherlock said...

If I life save him he can't need mouth-to-mouth because that's your job and he's spiky with stubble and anyway he showed me a thing he has to put over people's mouths when you breath into them that's like plastic because otherwise people can BE SICK IN YOUR MOUTH so I'll do the swimming and you can do the kissing with sick bit.

I might share it with you if you behave like you say I have to if I want something.

Greg Lestrade said...

There's icing bowls for everyone.

Greg Lestrade said...

And your face when I told you that, Sherlock, was a complete picture of horror :) I can only assume it is again as you think about it.

John H. D. Watson said...

you can do the kissing with sick bit.

Thanks...

Greg Lestrade said...

We can add it to our vows, Danger ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha, I was just thinking that. For better or for kissing with sick...

Greg Lestrade said...

I'd like to say I've never been involved in a kissing/vomit scenario...but I'd be lying.

I can't say it was brilliant for that relationship!

John H. D. Watson said...

I'd like to say I've never been involved in a mouth-to-mouth/vomit scenario, but sadly that wouldn't be true either.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'd like to think you didn't blame the casualty for it though... (I blamed him. I mean, at the time. Well...no, still do, actually.)

I haven't ever vomited on anyone whilst attempting to kiss them, you'll be glad to know :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Was there alcohol involved?

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh yes.

Nicky said...

Not whilst attempting to *kiss* them, huh, big Bro?

Hope the cakes all turn out well! Such a lovely subject matter to be discussing while baking!

Greg Lestrade said...

Sometimes I wish I'd never tried to tell you anything in your young life. Especially not about relationships!

(I change my statement above. Don't tell any youngsters about embarrassing things to make them feel better if they then use it against you later in life!)

John H. D. Watson said...

I think I need the full story here...

Greg Lestrade said...

I have given as full a story as you're getting on here on my blog.

Nicky said...

Oh, I appreciated it at the time! No one ever really tells you how things like that go wrong. Or right, for that matter. It's all very clinical and factual, or it was at school.

You were - are - a good brother, and a good Uncle. And I'm glad you've found John who you can laugh along with.

REReader--25 hours is too long for me, I'm sure I wouldn't like it! Have an easy fast. (That's the right thing to say, right?)

REReader said...

Thank you Anon--that's a very good thing to say. :)
