evidence suggests

Sherlock at least may have been in the water a bit longer than I'd originally suspected, given his pockets were full of duckweed. I asked him why, and he said he wanted to look at it under the microscope - a suspicious answer at best since he knows perfectly well what fits on a slide (hint: not whacking great handfuls of anything at all).

He asked if I'd thrown it away. Not yet, I said.

S: Can I have it back?

J: Why?

S: Because.

J: Because why?

S: I bet it would grow, I could grow it in the bathtub and have lots of it!

He's settled for growing a somewhat more modest amount of it on his windowsill. What he wants with lots of duckweed is another question entirely, but I suspect the answer is simply so he can have lots of duckweed. An end unto itself.

In other news, apparently I'm going to ride a motorcycle tomorrow, or at least hang on tightly to Lestrade while he rides one. I'll try not to tip it over.

Also, Justblue sent this to me a few days ago. Why me and not Lestrade I'm sure I've no idea. I'm confident he would be proud to post it on his own blog.

*blinks* Go Sherlock. Even I'm going to have to think for a bit about what you can do with great whacking handfuls of duckweed. Also, that is the greatest macro I've ever seen. Lestrade should be proud. Lestrade should have them replace his defaced picture with that.

On that note, could the anonymous troll be the picture defacer? And if so, am I allowed to commit acts of grievous mayhem upon them until they are smote from the Earth and their names are stricken from the book of life and spoken never more?

Because I would, if you like. Sherlock could help.

I think perhaps the duckweed was like Everest. You know, because it's there.

Probably the thing to do is ignore the troll. Although I've never been so tempted to ask their mum for a favor.

Lindsay said...

Ignoring is probably best. The balance of probabilities is that it's only some twat with nothing better to do with his time than rile people for fun. Such people are unmoved by both logic and threats. And unlike the little bastards my mom told me to ignore when I was getting taunted in primary school, they can't actually hurt anyone.

I love that picture. And you should absolutely give Lestrade the choie of which pic he wants on his profile- that macro or the Young Constable Lestrade one.

John H. D. Watson said...

I agree, absolutely. Although I'm still keeping a copy of the other one. It's the only one I've got where he's actually smiling.

Greg Lestrade said...

Um, well. Thanks, Justblue, that very excruciatingly embarrassing. I mean, er, kind and flattering.

Actually, it did give a lot of pretty miserable coppers a laugh, and for that I really do thank you. My team have already found time to print it out and stick it on my office door.

Bronwyn - the picture has been replaced already, with something slightly more up to date than the one on my blog, but no less cheesy. And I don't know who the troll is, but I've made a lot of enemies during my career. And I'm a trained professional as far as taking abuse is concerned, so don't worry on my account. Some anonymous coward clearly struggles to find much enjoyment in life.

John H. D. Watson said...

Did you have to explain to them what GQMF meant, or did they already know?

annoyedwabbit said...

My god, that is the most amazing macro ever.

Duckweed choked ponds - so smooth and flat and green - make me want to try walking on them. Logically I know it won't work, but still... the urge is there. Like standing at the top of a very high precipice, looking over, and wondering what would happen if I jumped.

@Bronwyn - I approve of the smiting idea. Think you could use your chemistry skills to rig yourself up a flaming sword?

John H. D. Watson said...

At the old house, in Dartmoor, there was so much ground that looked like that when you got out to the bog. Nearly impossible to tell where the solid bits stopped and the treacherous suck-you-down-to-a-soggy-death parts began. I still can't believe how long Sherlock ran wild out there without getting in serious trouble.

Greg Lestrade said...

Some of them knew. All of them were surprised I knew - except the ones who read all this.

Sally nearly gave one of the old boys a heart attack she screamed so loudly with laughter and glee.

Lindsay said...

I think it's the smaller "goddamn" in the corner that really sells it.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm pleased to have helped brighten their day. I'm thinking of putting it up on the front door here as well.

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger - I'm barely smiling in it. But you keep telling me i don't frown all the time...and don't you dare put it on any doors.

And Sherlock had some sort of sixth sense, I reckon. Maybe he should be an explorer later in life? Or a bog snorkling champion.

I'll probably be here til late tonight. No idea how late. Ok if I turn up at an ungodly hour? And...don't worry, but I got a smack on the head earlier. Doc says I'm fine, just a bit of a lump, and a headache.

John H. D. Watson said...

Smack on the head from whom and why? Who got you to actually go see a doctor? Sally, I suppose - thanks, Sally.

Turn up whenever you like. I'll save some dinner for you.

Greg Lestrade said...

From a suspect, because he tried to slam a door as I tried to catch him (suspect nil, door 1, met police 1) and I of course went to see the doc under my own steam, once he was booked in.

And thanks. I'm so hungry that any minute now Bob and Midge will be writing me a charity single and organising a concert.

John H. D. Watson said...

I can bring you something if you like?

Sally said...

Bollocks. He went because the doctor was here anyway, and I threatened to tell you.

Thanks for the picture, it's a good one!

John H. D. Watson said...

He should put it on his Christmas cards next year. Thanks, Sally, I had a suspicion it might've happened like that.

Lawless said...

It was sent to you and not Lestrade because he's entirely too modest and would have kept it to himself. :D Thank you for the publc service you performed by posting it.

Enjoy the duckweed. I don't know how well it's going to last on Sherlock's windowsill.

I shall pretend I haven't seen through your pathetic ruse to come and check up on me (Sally will assure you that my skull is thick enough to withstand abuse from a flimsy council door) and say 'yes' to food...if you're able to leave the SwampThing and Mycroft?

BUT - and I want you to take this seriously - we're investigating the murder of a little boy from this morning, so there are lots of pictures and things up everywhere. And I know you've seen terrible things in the Army, and being a Doctor, but this is brutal and pretty harrowing, and you haven't had to deal with stuff like this since you've been close to the boys, and I don't want to be the one who adds to the horror in your memories, okay? So I can come down, instead of you coming up, if you call me when you get here.

John H. D. Watson said...

It was barely subtle enough to be called a ruse, but hush, you're still getting food out of it. And so is Sally if she wants some? Anthea and Mrs Hudson are teaching the boys how to play poker. I think Sherlock may turn out to have an unfortunate talent for it.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock? Poker? Surely that can't be a good idea.

Sally will doubtless bite your arm off at that offer, and I'll try and send some of the others for refs while we eat. Otherwise you might find a queue forming.

You could bring some painkillers though. Ibuprofen or something like that?

John H. D. Watson said...

Absolutely. I'll be there shortly. Mrs Hudson is sending enough biscuits to build you a new office with as well.

Greg Lestrade said...

I swear she has some sort of reverse-black-hole of the biscuit world in her store cupboard.

John H. D. Watson said...

It would explain a lot.

Greg Lestrade said...

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT - From here on, John Hamish 'Danger' Watson shall hereby be known as 'Saint Danger - patron Saint of hungry coppers everywhere', after performing the miracle of injecting life into us with the provision of dinner. Please all address him from now on as 'Saint Danger'. Thank you.

Now get back to work, Sally. And you might want to wash those plates.

Sally said...

If you didn't already have a head injury I'd box your ears with those plates, SIR.

Thank you, John, that was very kind of you. You're welcome back any time!

annoyedwabbit said...

You know, now I really want to make an icon (in the religious sense) of Saint Danger with the Holy Biscuits of Mrs. Hudson... Maybe a teacup in his other hand?

Greg Lestrade said...

Sometimes, I long for the good old days, when sergeants respected their DI.

Annoyedwabbit - you should. Dress it in striped pyjamas. Mess up its hair, add biscuits and tea (mug), and you will basically have your own little Saint Danger.

You okay Danger? You were a bit quiet. Thanks for the food - I will try to be quiet when I get in later. Just do a final sweep before you go to bed of Sherlock-related deathtraps for me?

John H. D. Watson said...

Sally - You're quite welcome. I was glad of the excuse to make sure his brains weren't dripping out his ears.

L - You respected your DI, did you? Never gave him any lip?

Don't worry about deathtraps (although I do always check), I'll likely wait up, so the lights will be on.

Greg Lestrade said...

Are you kidding? My first DI was scarier than any criminal I've ever come up against! Perhaps some of the others, though...

My brains wouldn't drip. It's just dust up there.

You don't have to wait up! I've no idea what time I'll be back. Depends if we get any more test results back tonight, and when various briefs and social workers turn up. If ever. Get some sleep. And get some for me, too.

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't think sleep is going to happen tonight. Turns out I should've listened to you about the pictures and so on. Sorry.

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh, Jesus, I'm sorry! You should have said. I'll be home as soon as I possibly can. Try and...I don't know, distract yourself? Watch a stupid film? Borrow one of Mrs Hudson's trashy novels?

I should've warned you better. I know you're used to all sorts of violence, but I am aware it's different, what we see. I wish I could give you a hug right now.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm fine, don't worry about me. I just don't think sleep would work out terribly well right now.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm fine, don't worry about me

Aren't those my lines? And do they EVER work on you?

Want to call me? Talk about it? Blog about it? Do something to stop it all swirling about inside your head?

Mycroft, if you're still up, go and give John a hug from me, would you? You might be too old for hugs, but he isn't, okay?

John H. D. Watson said...

No one hit me on the head with a door, I'm perfectly all right. I'm just going to watch telly.

Greg Lestrade said...

I've just noticed how many question marks I managed to put in my above comment.

Okay. But I really will be home as soon as I can. I can nip in and clear up the loose ends tomorrow morning.

John H. D. Watson said...

Thank you.

Greg Lestrade said...

No problem.

Just waiting for one more phonecall, and I'll be on my way.

Greg Lestrade said...

Finally! On my way. Be with you asap. If I can remember where you live... (no, seriously, painkillers are working. Headache reduced to dull throb.)

itsmeektg said...

And so, in the year of our Lord two thousand and eleven, it was ordained that the thirteenth day of April would hence be named Saint Danger day, in honor of the Patron Saint of Hungry Coppers And Extremely Intelligent Children.

And yes, every capital is necessary. Have a nice night, you two.

Elizabeth said...

Yikes... Sorry about the pictures, Danger. Hopefully the test ride with DI GQMF will be distracting.

I can offer only the small consolation of liking the bluish-white background more than the old green one.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, I think I like it better too.

And the pictures... He was so close to Sherlock's age. Even looked a bit like him. That's all. I'm not normally so easily shaken. Though I won't pretend I'm not glad L came home earlier than he'd planned to.

Bronwyn said...

Silly stories, John. Get yourself laughing and it'll be better. I had to spend ours watching/reading stupid humor after I did my first serial killer case study. Don't ask who it was, you sincerely don't want the guy in your head, but a bit of laughter and I slept pretty well.

Though, I still refuse to let my students do reports on him. Too, too awful.

Alternatively, I suppose you could continue to indulge your blogs schizophrenic tendencies and keeping changing the background for a while longer. *cheesy grin*

Feel better.

Toodle,
Bronwyn

John H. D. Watson said...

I only change it once a month! Well. Unless I get complaints. This one's rather restful though. I might leave it a while.

Lindsay said...

Now I'm curious to know, Bronwyn. I'm kind of a morbid person though, I just plowed through a couple books on HH Holmes (no relation, I'm sure!). But then it's different when it's real. And the killers that go after kids give me the screaming creeps.

Hope you settle yourself down enough to sleep at some point, John. I find it helps me turn my brain off if I watch cartoons I've seen a million times before and do sudoku. Of course, I've been doing sudoku before bed for so long I have my brain trained to think sudoku=sleepytimes.

Bronwyn said...

@Lindsey, Dean Corll. You've been warned. It doesn't help that my mother grew up near this wacko.
Toodle,
Bronwyn

Lindsay said...

Yikes. Just skimmed the article, too close to bed for anything in detail, but that's some nasty, nasty stuff.

People just terrify me. I will never understand how they can go so desperately wrong in the head.

Bronwyn said...

I'm always a bit of a restless sleeper during the serial murder unit. The boys find it fascinating right up until they stumble on one that hits too close to home. I'm very glad it's a senior level course and I know they come out of it with far more respect for what the police and forensic investigative do, but it can be a hard class to teach.
Toodle,
Bronwyn

Greg Lestrade said...

It was pretty horrific. Even a few of the officers with kids shed a few tears.

It's odd, sometimes you feel like you should be professional and control yourself, but other times, because, sadly, you do get used to it, you feel a bit less than human for not being upset.
