the night before

Wednesday night: ostensibly a night like any other night.

The boys got their homework done. Lestrade got home in time for dinner. We all ate together - rather quickly in the boys' case, since Lestrade had brought along his guitar case and they were a lot more interested in that than in pasta.

He also had a box with him. A flat, white box. It filled my heart with dread, for I could guess what it contained. (And whose fault it was, Elizabeth. I won't be forgetting any time soon [this post, first comment].)

The guitar was acoustic, really a lovely sound to it, mellow and rich. He did Folsom Prison Blues (possibly my favorite song of all time) and didn't even make me sing it. He's got a beautiful voice as well, though I'm sure he'll try to convince you otherwise.

And then, just one song in, it was time for the box. It was worse than I feared. He'd only gone and got it personalized.

He spent actual money on it. Yes, I did try it on. It was a gift after all, even if it was specifically designed to wind me up. I did not sing anything while wearing it, or dance, and if he says otherwise you're not to listen because he is absolutely lying.

I'd be more irritated with him if he were still here, I suppose, but as it is I'm just not managing it. I miss him.

I've no words for the awesomeness of this post. :D

Oh my god. I'm going to need Dr. Sparkles to rescue me from laughter-induced cardiac arrest before I can give DI Martin Finchley the high five he so thoroughly deserves.

I'd apologize, John, but you did try it on. That shows that you're secretly chuffed to have such a first-rate motorcycle jacket.

Stop being so hung up on the money! It was a few quid for a charity shop jacket, and a few quid for a transfer. That photo probably makes it look better than it is...and I know you'll get good wear out of it, right?

Elizabeth, he loves it. I had to wrestle it off him when it was time for bed. I wouldn't be surprised if he wrote this wrapped up in it over his pyjamas.

And Martin Finchley sounds like a normal name. I couldn't object to 'Finchley' as a surname. Doctor Sparkles should totally have been on my poll...

Hahahaha, well played, Lestrade! You are a horrible, horrible man but you have the best sense of humor ever. :D

Or maybe John gets that prize, since he didn't actually murder you with a toaster.

Somehow I suspect the wrestling him out of it later had little to do with the jacket itself.

I have no words, only laughter.

Greg Lestrade said...

Lindsay - yet. He's probably at home sharpening the toaster right now.

Elizabeth - You're right, I should've thrown it immediately into the fire, but he'd do his pitiful face at me and say he made it himself and I am such a sucker oh god.

L - I can't stop going on about the money! I cannot believe you actually paid to bring that into existence, even if it was only a few quid! I would pay to have it taken away.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, you pay me to take it away, then technically I've broken even...

And I do not have a 'pitiful face' you're just soft.

John H. D. Watson said...

You absolutely do, it's worse than Sherlock's!

Greg Lestrade said...

You're absolutely soft.

You are okay with me seeing Darren here (the ex) aren't you? Have you even seen my blog comments? I'm starting to find your silence on the matter a touch worrying, now.

Greg Lestrade said...

John? Text me, or leave a message here, seriously. Can't answer my phone in here, and I'm worried.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh for heaven's sake! No, I am not concerned about you having lunch with Darren. It's perfectly all right.

I was cleaning up dog vomit and then having a nap. Turns out that after prolonged exposure to your absurd levels of body heat at night I don't sleep all that well without it.

John H. D. Watson said...

And I am not soft!

Greg Lestrade said...

Jesus, you frightened me. Dog vomit doesn't sound good. Everyone ok? You are a bit soft.

I don't sleep well without your contented snoring or limpit like tendencies either. And when I do I dream about weird shit.

We're off out to dinner for a bit. Be back later.

John H. D. Watson said...

It's my own fault. Phobos ate something dead while I was walking him. I didn't notice soon enough to stop him. He seems fine now, but I'm still thinking of calling the vet.

And you are the last person to accuse me of being soft.

Greg Lestrade said...

I take it Sherlock and Mycroft didn't help with pike clear-up, or you'd know what it was, time of death, cause of death etc.

Why the last person?

And you'd be proud of me. I just had curry. Korma, I admit, but it was still curry. And very nice.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm extremely proud. Does this mean Indian restaurants are no longer completely taboo? Do I have Darren to thank for this?

Why the last person?

Because last time you went to Tesco with Sherlock on your own, he was halfway done with an entire aerosol can of whipped cream by the time you got home.

Greg Lestrade said...

Above should have said 'puke', not pike.

Not completely taboo, no. Provided they do things like that. And I love poppadoms. Not just Darren, there were 7 of us, it was mob rule, rozzers, beer, curry. And i did get the piss ripped out of me for getting something mild.

The aerosol cream was an experiment in expansion of gasses, not me being soft. If only you'd let me experiment with the other half. I would have proven far from soft.

I hope you both appreciate how HARD I reign myself in on a daily basis. Every single time you talk about something Sherlock or Mycroft does I instantly think of a half dozen ways to make it cooler, more interesting, messier, more explosive or more informative. And I hardly share any of them.

It's such a good thing they don't have their own blog. I would forever be offering them really bad ideas that are truly epic amounts of fun.

Just FYI.

L - Next time. You didn't say what you were planning to do with it. And I'm glad you've found some people to make your evenings less dire. Also we're having Indian when you get back.

Browwyn - Ha! Sherlock does not need any help making things more explosive, trust me.

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger - live dangerously! I didn't know what I wanted to do with it. That's half the fun!

Tonight was good. I knew Darren, and two other lads, one from another course I went on, one from an investigation a few years ago.

Indian, yes - but don't try and inflict any of your vicious Thai stuff that you love.

Bronwyn - share what you like before Sunday - but once I'm back, have pity. I enjoy seeing Danger on occasion, and not having him constantly waiting for people to come and replaster walls, fix kitchen appliances, clean smoke or stains off ceilings etc.

John H. D. Watson said...

There is a huge amount of non-spicy Thai stuff! More than Indian, probably. I wouldn't make anyone eat the stuff I do. I actively prevent Sherlock from eating it actually. He should keep his taste buds a few years longer.

Greg Lestrade said...

Okay, I'll wait until you've entirely forgiven me for any jacket-related incidents, then perhaps trust you to order me some food.

Sherlock was quizzing me about pepper spray the other day, just so you know. You're about the only person I know who'd probably use it as a mouthwash.

You got any plans for tomorrow? I can't believe we've got summer weather, and I'm stuck here.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh god, what did he say? Any hint as to why he wanted to know?

I think tomorrow is a park and frisbee day. And we might go back to that pastry place. I could get you something if you like? It'd probably still be all right by the time you get home.

Greg Lestrade said...

I think he mainly wanted to know how to make it. Although why he asked me instead of Google, I don't know. I think he thought I could save him the bother, and just get some out of stores for him. I couldn't. I think he has been Googling to find out the hottest chillies though.

Don't worry about pastries for me. You'll only have to either resist the temptation to eat it, or be asked 800 times in the space of 2 minutes if you're sure I want it, by Sherlock, and if he can have it.

I'm working on getting a day off in the week. Any days better than others, with Mycroft's schedule?

ps. have blogged a few pics from Brighton. Not the ones I took of you artfully draped in sheets asleep on the bed. Although I am enjoying those.

John H. D. Watson said...

I think the most worrying part is trying to figure out what he wants it for.

Mycroft's got nothing on Wednesday, and not a lot on Thursday if you want to go see his skating class.

Am impressed at your avoidance of groyne jokes.

Greg Lestrade said...

it sounded fairly general. No specific plan, just wanted to know about it. Probably my fault - he asked what all the stuff police carried in their vests was - now there's about a tonne of it. So one of the things was pepper spray.

Depends when you'd like to try and fit in a test ride, then. I would like to see his class.

I know, it's very hard, but I try to get a grasp of the standards you set, and not dick about, because I'd hate to rub you up the wrong way. I bow down to your dictum, and uphold your yardstick of groyne etiquette.

John H. D. Watson said...

Probably either Thursday then, or Tuesday when he's with his tutors most of the day. We could do the test rides and then pick them both up after school.

...All right, now I'm really impressed. I was going to try to respond in kind, but I haven't got a hope.

Greg Lestrade said...

Okay.

About the other thing - are you upset because you didn't know? Or because I've never broken it off properly? Or...I don't even know. Both? Talk to me?

Greg Lestrade said...

John? Please answer one of my messages.

John H. D. Watson said...

Look, you really don't want me to talk to you right now, okay? Just give me a few hours.

And tell your sister of course she's still welcome.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's just a piece of paper, it doesn't mean anything.

I'm sorry.
