gay pubs of all sorts

The pub last night was nice, and made a change from Harry taking me to mainly lesbian ones. The hairy eyeballs I was getting last night were presumably trying to determine whether I was actually with L, or if he was free for the evening.

When I go with Harry, we get looked at oddly for entirely different reasons...I assume (hope) it's because we don't look much alike. The woman behind the bar at the last one asked if we didn't think it was a strange place for a date. Harry laugh so hard she nearly fell over and said anywhere was a strange place to take your brother for a date. (She went home with the bartender later. I was completely unsurprised.)

I was not expecting the impromptu lesson on, er, handkerchief code. Did you all know this? Is this a thing people normally know? I honestly had no idea. (Mycroft, I can hear you thinking about clicking on that link - don't.) You should've seen L's face after I looked it up, like he'd irreparably scarred my innocence or something. He's very sweet sometimes.

Oh, look - I can write things again instead of staring stupidly at my keyboard. Brilliant. Thanks everyone, so much, for your comments on my last post (especially Kira - "hug him" was probably the best advice I could've got).

So, the last thing on my list of three.

...No, I think I'll do that next post.

...Is anyone else of the opinion that the "hairy eyeballs" cast Danger's way were probably not just checking out the availability of the OTHER hot guy?

Does anyone think he'll ever believe it?

(googled it anyway...*blush*)

Glad you had fun! And I had no idea about the handkerchief code. It kind of makes sense, I guess, though, frankly, I'd be embarrassed of showing all my preferences in public like that. And how's Harry? We haven't heard about her in a while. :)

Cee said...

I know about the hanky code, but I was a history major with a particular interest in post-Civil War American history, so... I don't believe it's common knowledge. Glad to hear your date went well!

I agree with itsmeektg. At least some of those pub patrons eying John weren't just checking that Lestrade was taken.

Also, if not for the (very sensible) solution of talking instead of using a code, one or both of you would need to invest in a chamoise handkerchief.

Paula said...

Come on, John, EVERYBODY knows about handkerchief code.

Anon Without A Name said...

Agreeing with everyone else that you were probably getting eyed up as much as Lestrade :-)

I knew about the code, but had to look up the colours (oddly, the only one I knew was dark red, which says nothing about me at all, I assure you).

And glad the previous post was cathartic for you. And provoked hugs. Hugs are good.

PS - did you ever get them all to watch Firefly when you were in Brighton?

I can assure everyone here that ALL hairy eyeballs aimed our way were wondering how some old bloke managed to get a night out with a completely hot, fit young man. Most of them probably thought he was my nurse or something. But despite it bringing out a slightly possessive side in me, I had a wonderful night.

I constantly think I've irreparably scarred your innocence. But I do have fun doing it. (And before you say you're not innocent...if you didn't know about the hankies, you must be a BIT innocent.) Also, thank you to everyone who knows about it who isn't ancient. Makes me feel less of a relic.

Glad you're feeling better about, well, everything. Apart from number 3. Maybe I should do...I dunno. Writing it all down here feels...very exposed. Writing it all down and just ripping it up doesn't feel like it would achieve anything. Thinking about it certainly doesn't help, but it's all I seem to be able to do. I need to go and see the family later, too. Which I'm really not looking forward to.

John - so glad you two had a nice night out. Mycroft and Sherlock were both wonderful to look after. Although I think Sherlock was still rather tired.

Will I get to meet Harry? She sounds like a lot of fun.

As for the handkerchief code, well, I think Greg tried to shelter me when I was younger, but I did know a little about it. I used to find out all sorts of things from his friends, even if he wouldn't tell me! Whenever I came to stay with him it was always an eye-opening experience.

Greg - you can talk to me, you know.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - there's always that talking thing, to Nicky if not to me. Or the Met must have therapists available if you're too worried about upsetting us?

if you didn't know about the hankies, you must be a BIT innocent

"Ignorant" may be the word you want there, although I think I just wasn't ever in a situation where the knowledge would've done be any good. At any rate, I had a lovely time last night, thanks.

John H. D. Watson said...

Nicky - thanks again for looking after them. I'm relieved Sherlock behaved for you, and yeah, he's had a big week, probably is a bit tired still.

I can ask Harry to join us for Sunday lunch? Or dinner tonight if that's easier, I don't know how much preparation you've got to do Sunday if you're leaving the next day.

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh...fuck it.

(Sorry, Danger - just realised this is your blog not mine. Don't mean to be cryptic.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Don't be sorry, love. I'm just glad you're talking to someone.

Nicky said...

Capisco.

Sunday sounds good, John. I think we'll just be taking it easy then, a bit of packing and then lunch sounds ideal! I look forward to meeting Harry. I feel as though sisters should stick together against your two, sometimes!

Do you and the boys have plans for the Royal Wedding? It sounds like London will be completely mad that day.

(And sorry from me too, for the Italian.)

Lindsay said...

No need to apologize. If you want to have a private word, that's certainly your affair! Like John, I just think it's good that you're talking.

I guess I have some mother hen tendencies too. Which is weird, because you're at least a decade older than me. ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

I have plans to avoid it, does that count? Very happy for them and all, but it's going to be a madhouse. And apparently L might be mingling with the crowd because he has relevant experience (spotting nutters?), although I'm not sure of what sort.

Greg Lestrade said...

I think it's because I used to be in Drugs and Gangs when I was a DS. (Now serious and organised crime), and they're obviously worried about people causing disruption. And there just aren't enough officers to cover the entire route and also be on call without roping in people like me. So I've got to run a team. I probably won't be in the main crowds - on the edge, waiting for reports from the spotters etc. and targeting any trouble. So let's hope there isn't any.

Avoiding it sounds like the perfect plan.

Lindsay - I suppose a truly private word would have been emailing the little Sis, not doing it here. I don't know. For some reason it seemed easier to do it that way.

John H. D. Watson said...

This does always seem easier than email, why is that? Maybe we've got buried exhibitionist tendencies. Is there a handkerchief for that?

Maybe we'll see you on the telly. I know Mrs Hudson has plans to watch it here - and has a special cake planned.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hope you don't see me on telly - because it'll mean there's a serious fight/incident/terrorist attack, I imagine.

There's a hanky for everything, I think.

Sometimes I forget this isn't email. My phone emails everything here to me, or...gets it the same as it does email, however that works.

I'm going to be gone a while. Got to go and talk to the family of the victim. Can't put it off any longer. No idea how long I'll be.

John H. D. Watson said...

Good luck, love.

Anonymous said...

I didn't necessarily know the handkerchief code, but as soon as he said it I knew what he was talking about. I haven't clicked the link yet as I'm still following the rule of not Googling anything Lestrade says. I try to hold on to my youthful obliviousness for as long as I can. At least if it's not hurting anybody.

Good luck with the family L. I'm sure that's never an easy conversation.

Anon Without A Name said...

Lestrade's protestations would be more credible if we hadn't all seen the DI GQMF pic :-p

Lestrade - that sounds like a painful way to spend the afternoon, for you and them. Good luck.

Lawless said...

I love what Harry said to the bartender! Yes, I knew about the handkerchief code before, although not the specifics of the colors.

I'm glad you had a good time at the pub. I assume Lestrade did, too.

Communication of any sort in any venue is helpful. Good luck with the case and the royal wedding surveillance, Lestrade.

Sally said...

John, did the Boss talk to you about the whole security situation? He's being very quiet about it.

I told him I'm sure the boys' Mum wouldn't mind lending him a couple of people. She seems like an ok sort of person, and it's in her interests, really. Plus it would stop him worrying.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sally - wait, what? Security situation?

Sally said...

I'm assuming by the way he just glared at me that's a 'no' then...I think you should ask him.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's nothing, it's in hand, and it's neither my sergeant's nor the boys' mother's concern. Thank you.

John H. D. Watson said...

...right, well, I'm confused now, but okay. Nothing further to add? And don't be too hard on Sally, she didn't mean to rat you out.

Anon Without A Name said...

With all due respect, Lestrade, your habit of keeping things from people because you think it will worry them/you don't want to talk about/you want to protect them/whatever hasn't been working out so well for you. Time to reconsider?

Sally said...

I didn't, no. But that's because I didn't think he'd be an idiot and not tell you, after we'd talked about it.

He got another death threat. With a photograph of him, from the day the pool car had it's tyres slashed. (When he was after info on the gang we think are sending them.)

Understandably he was worried because his sister is staying in his flat. So I suggested he talk to you, or the Anthea woman who I think is something to do with security? Because I'm pretty sure that they'd care enough about him and his family to keep an eye on them all.

He promised me he'd talk to you/them about it.

And I don't want to rat him out, but he's a bloody good boss, and he's working himself to death right now, and I don't think he should have anything more to worry about than he already does. Because whether he likes it or not, people care about him. Even if he is a stubborn arse.

With all due respect, Sir.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yes, Sally, and I talked to the local nick and got them to send a few more patrol cars around past my flat than normal, and I checked Nicky knew how to set the burglar alarm to night mode and got Anthea to keep an eye on the CCTV in the building and no one else needed to know or worry. And they still don't. All right?

A problem shared isn't actually a problem halved. It's just a problem for more people.

John, I'll be late home. Eat without me.

Sally said...

Oh. Sorry Sir. I just...well, I made assumptions. Going on past evidence.

Sorry.

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't really know what to say. I suppose I haven't got any actual right to be angry. So. That's that.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's okay, Sal, can't blame you for that.

Danger - I...I dunno. I don't know what I'm thinking half the time. Seemed like the right thing to do. But I think the last few weeks have shown I've got crap judgement, as Nameless Anon says.

Nicky said...

Oh, Greg. You just haven't changed since we were kids. And while I love you for it, I also want to give you a shake and remind you we're all grown ups now! You're a wonderful big brother, but sometimes you do drive me mad.

Will we see you tonight?

Greg Lestrade said...

No, doing a late one. Should mean I can have lunch with you all tomorrow. Sorry I haven't seen much of you, just bad timing.

I really will try to come and visit soon, with John and the boys.

Anon Without A Name said...

That's not *exactly* what I said, but... :-p

Look, you've been taking responsibility for taking care of yourself and everyone else for your whole adult life and a good few years before that. You didn't have anyone else you could rely on or share that with. So it's a deeply ingrained habit, and I suppose it must be frustrating as anything to have people suddenly expecting you to give up that very safe, very comfortable, level of control. Maybe it feels as if they're questioning your ability to handle the situation. But holding on to all of that isn't doing you any good, and it isn't doing you any favours.

Put yourself in Nicky's position, or John's, or Sally's, having to cope with you keeping them at arm's length. How would you feel if John was getting death threats and not telling you? Or if Sally was handling a case that clearly had some personal resonance? Or Nicky was going through a tough time and telling you that there's nothing wrong and you should just stop worrying?

No-one who cares is going to thank you for keeping this stuff to yourself. Been there, done that, felt like an utter tit afterwards :-/

Just... something to think about?

Hope you don't have to work too late tonight. Eat something. And talk to John, for god's sake.

(OK, I'll shut up now)

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger, should be home around 11. Don't wait up.

Sorry it's so late, just some new things came up, after talking to the family.

Done much today? Didn't get caught in the downpour earlier, I hope.
