Well, he wasn't joking about the nightmares. The latest must've been quite something. He kicked me straight out of bed with a well placed foot to the arse. I woke up halfway down and manage to roll when I hit the ground. More or less. Lestrade sat straight up, said, "Sturgeon!" and went immediately back to sleep. Can't wait to hear him explain that one.
He seemed perfectly peaceful after that, so I left him to it. Myself, I need some tea and bad late night television before I give sleep a second chance. It's nice, actually. The quiet, and the sitting very still. My "brutal cleaning regimen," as Lestrade put it, has been keeping me pretty busy. It was the thought of Sherlock picking this thing up. I think he would've ended up in hospital, apart from being completely miserable of course. I'd worry less about Mycroft, but only slightly.
Lestrade, I have to say, must have the constitution of a horse. Is that a real phrase? Constitution of a horse? Sounds wrong, but I'm not really awake. I hope the other man's doing as well as he is, and that his wife's keeping him in bed. That sounds entirely wrong, but you know what I mean. God, maybe Harry's right and I actually do worry about everyone.
Right, back to bed. I'll say this for his fever - it keeps my feet warm.

Well, I'm sorry that you have to be kicked out of bed to get some peace, but I'm glad that you're getting any at all. Good luck with your second shot at sleep.
Sturgeon? It's probably just sleepy gibberish. xD Poor John, don't exhaust yourself too much either, we don't want you to get sick. And how's Sherlock doing in school nowadays? Is he getting along better with his classmates?
I've always heard the phrase "constitution of an ox". But then, given my origins, I'm a never-ending cornucopia of barnyard animal sayings.
Constitution of an ox. Stubborn as a mule. Antsier than a long-tailed cat in a rocking chair factory. That dog don't hunt here. More ways to skin a cat than sticking its head in a boot jack and jerking on its tail.
Maybe I should stop. I'm pretty sure they only get more graphic from there.
Stay healthy, get sleep and hope everyone feels better!
Toodle,
Bronwyn
Ahh yes, Bronwyn, but are there any about Sturgeon?
Hope you feel better soon! And John, listen to Lupe and take care of yourself!
Sturgeon. Oh my lord. *laughs herself to bed*
Ugh
You okay? And listen to Lupe. You're working too hard. I'm well enough to do stuff around the flat.
You sure it was sturgeon?
(should add i'm asking if he's ok while he sleeps next to me. No obvious sign of injury.)
Maybe it was 'surgeon'.
Or I had a sudden urge for caviar
Out of all the things I dreamt about I think it was a fairly tame thing to say. And probably lucky I kicked him out of bed instead of fought him.
Sounds like a few minutes peace and quiet was good for you; shame it was in the middle of the night. Hope you managed to get a bit of a lie-in today.
L - Yesterday you couldn't pick up a small five-year old, and you had to get a cab back from the park. Today you're "well enough to do stuff around the flat"? Stop being absurd, it doesn't suit you. You know that if you try to do too much too soon you'll take far longer to recover. Take it easy for a few days, then I'm sure John would be happy to you to start being a bit more energetic around the flat :-)
I'm not suggesting anything strenuous. Just don't thing John should wear himself out. Not doing anything now as we have to watch the wedding with Mrs h.
Watching Sherlock eat cake is making me feelill.
L- definitely sturgeon.
Elizabeth - thanks, it's not so bad really, just nice to sit for a while.
Lupe - Sherlock's been on his Easter holidays these past two weeks, though this week his school's had a few extra lessons arranged. I don't think he's looking forward to going back full time. At all.
Bronwyn - an OX, that was it, thank you. I've been trying to remember that all week without even knowing what I was trying to remember. Frustrating.
itsmeektg - If there are any sayings about sturgeon, they're probably in Russian.
Don't remember anything about sturgeons. Don't want to remember much.
Danger - We'll do something with the boys before Sherlock is back at school properly on Tuesday.
Nameless - was allowed to 'help' Mycroft with homework. Which meant sit next to him and look blank while he talked.
L - That'll be nice. Any ideas?
was allowed to 'help' Mycroft with homework
You can always tell Sherlock more stories... Actually you can make the tea too. You look a lot less grey today.
Didn't think I was allowed any ideas about doing anything...
And will do, both counts. What do you want to eat? Nothing that smells too strong.
You can have ideas about doing something Sunday or Monday. Honestly, you work yourself half to death all the time, I wouldn't think you'd be so resistant to the idea of a little break.
Rice and vegetables?
Got any risotto rice? I can knock up a quick pea and lemon risotto, if Mrs H will donate some left over lemon from her baking session today.
I'm not resistant to the idea...just feeling guilty that if I'm better I'm not back at work.
Better than puking your guts out is not the same as being fully recovered. Try not to worry. Also risotto sounds lovely.
I will actually have to see a 'real' doctor, as in one who can give me a sick note, you know. Unless you've somehow got an NHS computer tucked up your sleeve. The Met does like its paperwork.
Hope it will be lovely. It's just a very simple recipe, so don't get excited.
I know. Do you have someone in mind?
You may not believe it, but I am registered with a surgery near my flat. I'll have to get an appointment on Tues. with whoever's taking the on-the-day appointments.
Or I'll go to a walk-in somewhere near the Yard, if they don't have any suitable times.
Maybe we should go to London Fields Lido with the boys - they can both swim, can they? And if I feel knackered I shall limit myself to the shallow end. Tomorrow, perhaps? Weather's supposed to be okay. Although I kind of like swimming in the rain, personally.
Mycroft can. Sherlock, despite his eagerness to throw himself into various bodies of water, can't, but I don't see any reason he shouldn't start learning. Sounds like a good time.
If Sherlock needs help then it's all the more reason for me to take it easy in the shallow end. We can get him some arm bands and a float or whatever kids need.
Between the two of us and Mycroft we can take turns keeping an eye on him and getting a few lengths in.
Given his usual learning curve, he'll probably be swimming laps around the rest of us by the end of the day.
Be nice if he was confident enough in the water that we can swim in the Serpentine during the summer. Not that his confidence will be an issue. Be nice if we were confident in his swimming ability, I suppose I mean.
We can always train a one of the dogs to rescue him. By 'we' I mean 'Mycroft'.
Be nice if we were confident in his swimming ability
Yeah, that's the trick. We'll see how it goes tomorrow, but I doubt it'll be a problem. Only time he ever has trouble learning is when he doesn't want to, and he's madly enthusiastic about getting wet.
Good. Just a shame the dogs can't come. They seem pretty enthusiastic about the water, too.
Still, if we go camping near the coast in the summer then they'll be something for everyone. Sea, stars, and those double sleeping bags you zip together - so I can't kick you out.
Sounds idyllic. Cooking over an open fire... All right, watching you cook over an open fire...
Perhaps some sturgeon.
for that, I'm getting you army ration packs from the surplus store, and only cooking for me and the boys.
I will ask especially for the least popular ones.
(Anyway...open fire, perhaps if it's essentially a barbecue. Otherwise it's camping stoves all the way. Far more reliable. And ensuring we're camping near enough to a good pub that cooking outdoors isn't essential.)
Have you got a camping stove?
I bet the least popular ones are the sturgeon ones.
I might have. We can beg borrow and steal stuff, I'm sure. I haven't been camping for ages. Nickey's lot go sometimes, bet we could borrow their gear.
I think you're obsessed with sturgeons because you like bottom-feeders. (Yes, I've Googled. I had no idea how big some of them could get. We'd need a bloody massive fire/stove.)
Well it certainly explains you dreaming about them, doesn't it?
Good god, I just googled them too. They're enormous! How can caviar cost so much? One of those things must have pounds and pounds of the stuff.
I refuse to go into my dreams about anything involving bottoms on a public blog.
As for caviar - well, you pop out and fight a 5.5 metre long sturgeon for its eggs on minimum wage, and we'll start a cheap caviar business, undercutting all our competition.
I've never had caviar. Have you? I have this image in my head of you in dress uniform eating posh food in a posh mess somewhere.
You're not far off. It was Harry's wedding reception, and I was in uniform under duress ("I never ask you for anything, and it's my wedding! If you don't wear it, I'll never speak to you again!" "Is that a promise?"). And it was that pink kind that I think comes from salmon, not sturgeon, but I'm not sure.
I shall ask her for photos.
Didn't even know it came in pink.
Ugh, please don't, I look like a fool in them.
Maybe more sort of orange? Salmon colored anyway.
I'll be the judge of how you look. Or give you the option to find a picture of you in uniform that you do like to show me. How's that for compromise?
Only fair, seeing as I've got this horrible photo of myself staring back at me every time I'm on here.
And I have no idea about caviar of any kind - it could come in all the colours of the rainbow, as far as I know.
Does it have to be dress uniform? Because I pretty much look like a fool in all of those.
I'll help you change the photo if you like. You could do that other one with you smiling.
Rainbow colored caviar - Harry actually did consider that, but Clara vetoed it. Very sensible girl, Clara.
It would be nice, see you in all your finery, plus with your medals on...but no, whatever you'd rather I saw. Up to you. (although I'm certain you don't look like a fool)
You make it sound as if only one picture has ever been found of me smiling. I seem to recall a number of the recent ones included me smiling.
Oh god all right. Ask Harry if you want to, it won't kill me.
Well, I was thinking of the one from the wedding, but I do love the one of you when you're 14 or so and you've got the shaggy hair.
Okay, you can show me how to change it after dinner or something. At least then I'll know how to do it when my blog gets changed without my permission again. Looking at you, Mycroft Holmes.
And don't worry, unlike some around here I won't show the entire world via my blog (not without your express permission, upon seeing any pics she does send me)
Uh huh. Just the ones with food hanging out of my mouth...
That was before I made the above promise.
Although I do actually have a very sweet one of you, somewhere, which I feel sums you up perfectly. I'll have to see if I can find it. It's buried on the laptop somewhere.
I'm terrified.
If it helps with your fears, I can promise you it's nothing that would make Mrs H blush. Mind you, she is quite racy...
I'm not sure I've done anything in my life that would make Mrs H blush.
I would like to see this photo, Lestrade! :D
Personally I find caviar to be entirely vile. I had it at my grandparents' 50th anniversary party (and oh jesus, didn't that take on a disturbing tone once I got old enough to realize what that marriage was like! why were we celebrating THAT?) and never felt the need to sample it again.
Why do the foods famous for their consumption by the very rich and the very poor tend to be so effing disgusting? (Also on my personal do-not-fly list: haggis, lobster, and anything involving the feet or heads of pigs.)
Danger - REALLY? Christ. And you joke about me ruining your innocence... (And yes, I do know that she doesn't blush easily when I say that.)
Lindsay - it doesn't exactly sound appetizing. Or look it. And I've never understood truffles, either (I mean the funghi, not the chocolates - the chocolates I can understand!) they make everything smell horrific and don't really taste of anything special. (I shall try to find that picture)
...I can find no way to answer that without embarrassing myself, one way or another. Well played.
Aren't your Italian relatives horrified by your lack of reverence for truffles?
Don't worry. I'm very much enjoying running riot over your innocence. I feel very...privileged?
They are, yes. but seriously, if you've ever stood downwind of a truffle stall on a hot summer day in a small Italian marketplace...you'd wonder what on earth the fuss was about. And move upwind.
Me too.
I've never had any myself. They look pretty ugly though.
Really...hmm..once I'm truly feeling better I shall run riot a bit more, then.
None I've ever had tasted of much. But the smell is enough to put you off eating whatever they're on anyway. Truffle oil isn't so bad.
I used to live next to the mushroom houses in Pennsylvania where the shrooms are grown in piles of hot chicken poop. When the fog rolled in it would hold the fumes close to the ground and everything would smell like chicken shit for days. God those were good mushrooms though.
I'm not enamored of mushrooms to begin with, so I think I'd probably give truffles a miss.
DIE IN HELL
Heh. Also, I think one's generally meant to die before going to hell, except in very special cases.
A very good point, J.
I now get why you collect truffles from pigs in FarmVille. I have been so confused as to how pigs and chocolates relate to each other. See, goofing off and reading stuff like this is EDUCATIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
