L got the boys off to school this morning and then stuck around to help me get the dogs and all our stuff moved out of his flat and back to ours, so I'm writing this from the sofa and looking at a flat that's been so thoroughly cleaned that it looks...possibly better than before. L's off to work after lunch for a while and clearly worried about leaving me alone (note: I will be fine). Glad to be home.
Before all this, No was ahead in the poll nearly 2 to 1. Now it's split almost 50/50. Interesting. Related? Or just a bunch of people weighing in late? Well, I say late, but I'm sure most people don't check in on my meanderings every day.
Anyhow. Yesterday. No, the day before, right. Painkillers ate a lot of yesterday.
I was napping on the sofa, which was probably lucky. I'm sure it's why they didn't see me right away. They started smashing stuff, I woke up, they came at me. Which strikes me as a bit stupid - if they've been told to smash the place up and do it when it's empty, surely that implies their boss doesn't want them attacking the people who live there?
I knocked one out. The other hit me with the vase I had L's roses in (no great loss, it was a pretty ugly vase) (also HEAVY) so I got murky water all over me as well as bits of glass in my scalp. And the roses were ruined, obviously.
He ran off, I got myself up after a second and went to the window. Shot him in the arm, or maybe the shoulder. He kept running and I clearly wasn't going to catch him.
So I sat down and called Lestrade. I remember trying to think of a way to sound reassuring about it, but I couldn't, so I just went with the bare facts. Which perhaps explains why he broke several land speed records getting over here.
And then I tried to be reassuring with Sally via comment and you all saw how well that went. Got a kitchen towel to wipe the water and some of the blood off, picked a few pieces of glass out of my hair. Waited for L.
That's pretty much it.

That sound really scary and I'm not surprised Lestrade rushed over there. Glad you're okay!
Mostly I'm glad that the good guys are all going to be fine and the bad guys have all been caught. I do suspect "I knocked one out" is a bit of an understatement if guy #2 was already outside when you shot him and at the time you reported most of the blood wasn't yours. Or was that a little misdirection to keep people from worrying? (A statement that is never quite as reassuring as it's intended to be.)
But you're recovering, the boys are safe, I imagine you've got updated plans for dealing with this sort of crap, so everything is about as sorted as life ever gets.
Hugs all around.
Yeah 'reassuring' didn't really work out...
Now don't move off the bloody sofa uness you have to, and message me with anythhing you want me to bring home.
And don't, whatever you do, think about walking up to Sherlock's school to pick him up. Not at all, but especially not on your own.
Heh. Yes dear. What if I take Mrs Hudson with me?
Only if you're sure you feel up to it. I might be back by then, I don't know.
Do try to remember you wouldn't let me walk 5 minutes home from the park not so long ago. This is revenge worry.
Personally, I'm shocked by your poll. Really.
I'm a bit shocked as well. It is actually 50/50 now, exactly. I think maybe it's in how you think about it, like you and...Nameless? were talking about. Solve vs Stop. I was only thinking about Stop when I put it up, and situations like this actually, where your options are run (often not feasible), fight, or get beat to a pulp. People like to use WWII as an example for this, but in fact it didn't solve anything. It stopped the Nazis taking over Europe, which is obviously a brilliant result, but you still have an unfortunate amount of neo-Nazi sentiment in Germany and across the world.
...I put that all in one paragraph so it wouldn't look like I was going on and on but I am going on and on. I'll stop now.
you wouldn't let me walk 5 minutes home from the park
You looked like you were going to fall over! You even said you felt like you were going to fall over. But I won't go by myself, I promise.
Obviously I won't be back in time to fetch Sherlock. Be careful? And take it easy.
jesus h. christmas, john! i've finally gotten settled and was just coming to ask how the azalea is doing and i find all this drama! shit. are you really okay? you always were terrible at sitting still, but so incredibly brilliant at protecting what's yours. ♥ please take care of yourself (i.e. let greg and those lovely boys take care of you). sending lots of love your way!!
L - Sherlock nearly bowled me over with a leg-hug when I got here, but other than that I'm fine. Mrs T says the frog pond has approval from the powers that be and some of the kids from the older class might be able to help, as they're doing a summer course.
Chrissy - I am perfectly all right, I swear. So is your azalea, for the moment. How's Australia?
Right, good. Is there any hope Sherlock will have calmed down any time before I get there? Be leaving shortly. Sorry, took longer than I thought.
kholly - I wouldn't say knocking him out was simple exactly, but I didn't think anyone would be interested in a blow-by-blow either. Mostly the blood was from hitting his nose with my forehead.
L - I wouldn't say he's calm exactly, but he has agreed to give his current favorite subject a rest.
I don't mind talking to him about it. It's just a hard thing to explain.
I've got a pounding headache.
Leaving now (ish)
I think it's actually impossible without his least favorite answer - you'll understand when you're older.
Was it bad at work? I suppose that's a silly question. Don't see how it could've been good.
Not that bad. A lot of questions. Lot of funny looks. Nothing I can't handle.
australia is beautiful :) just cool enough outside so we don't overheat in the afternoon sessions, and so clear and quiet at night, i think even you'd be able to meditate for a bit ;)
I have to admit I was torn. "Yes" in the short term, "No" in the long term. Sometimes, when you're living minute-to-minute or rocket-to-rocket, violence is all there is and your choices are be the best at violence or be destroyed. But choosing violence as a strategic, long-term solution is choosing to lose. Just my .02
Glad you're home and reasonably well. Shame about the roses (perfect excuse to buy/be bought more, I would have thought). Not surprised Lestrade has a pounding head after the last couple of days.
I'm with Lestrade on the poll. I was surprised at how many people voted Yes in the first place, but now? And yeah, it was me and Lestrade talking about Stop or Solve. But the poll says Solve and I find it disturbing that so many people think violence solves things. No violence I've ever experienced has ever solved anything.
Nameless & Desert Wanderer - when you start talking long term, you're trying to solve human nature. I'm just not sure if it's possible.
Chrissy - sounds lovely, and very peaceful. Though I'm not sure about me meditating. There might not be enough peace anywhere in the world for that. Glad you went then?
Nameless - he's definitely due some more flowers.
John, in my opinion/experience, it doesn't exactly solve things in the short term, either. Or, if it solves one thing, it just opens up a whole new thing that also requires solving. Never-ending.
But I'm not saying there aren't times when violence, and stopping that one short term situation, is all you can do.
Not really saying anyone should agree with me. I think it's probably better most people don't.
Tomorrow...no short-term problem solving, right? Especially not with your bruises already...
If you really can't bear him, just kick him under the table. Pretend it was an accident. Deal?
That sounds like I think you've got no self control or something.
I didn't mean it to.
I just mean - he'll be out to rile us. Me. You, if you let him. It's just what he does. And he'll say things which will make you angry. And...well, that.
L - Ha, don't tell me I can kick him under the table, too tempting. It's all right, I know what you mean. Don't worry, I shall remain calm.
Don't worry, I shall remain calm.
Will you? Can you bottle some calm and give it to me? I'm already feeling decidedly not-calm, and it's 18 hours away yet.
John! Oh my God! You're really all right? You poor thing. And it's all because of Orio? I mean - his work? Please be careful - all of you.
For tomorrow - thank you so, so much for going with Orio. It makes me feel so much better. Will you try to get him to call me sometime?
Lots of love to you all.
L - I would if I could, love. Maybe you'll get some of it by osmosis overnight. I'll try to have calm dreams. No chance he'll be a decent human being about it, you think?
Nicky - Just some bastards trying to keep him from doing his job. I'm all right, a little knocked about, that's all. I will try to get him to call you, although I suspect it won't happen till this case is done with. Hope you're all doing well also, and that we get a chance to come and see you this summer.
If he's a decent human being about it...I'll be more suspicious than if he's just...
Nicky - I will call. Sometime. Don't worry, eh? Love to you all.
I'm really glad you're feeling better, John. I hope you are both able to get some sleep tonight. I'll keep my fingers crossed for tomorrow.
I responded Yes on the poll, but I think I may have a different mindset than some. I was a soldier, US Army, and, just in my experience, I have seen that sometimes violence is the only way to come about a peaceful resolution. It sounds kind of like an oxymoron, so I'm probably not explaining it correctly.
Just, I've seen how, sometimes, when nothing else will bring about a resolution, then violence can have far reaching consequences, and most often bring about peaceful resolutions. So I guess it's one thing leading into another.
And I'll stop while I'm ahead, lol.
Take care, and be safe!
*flails wildly and points at above entry* PIP! PIP! YOU'RE HERE! HI PIP! *boings*
I shan't elaborate on my answer and my reasons, but I was the first yes vote on the poll. And probably the 7th, 23rd and 38th as well. Vote early and vote often folks.
TTFN,
Bronwyn
P.S. HI PIP!
I think "you'll understand when you're older" is such an infuriating answer because in child-speak it translates to "I don't want to bother explaining it", rather than what it actually means ("it literally only makes any sense to people who have reached a certain age"). In fact, most things seem to translate to "don't bother me" in child-speak. Often that's what adults mean, so it's understandable.
Hi, Bronwyn!! I've been lurking for a while, but only recently become brave enough to post. HI!
*Huggleglomp*
I still think some of you are thinking of violence being a short-term solution to a problem which is then solved by non violent means. So like Pip said, it can lead to a problem eventually being solved, and it can be a tool to solve it, but violence on its own doesn't solve anything.
We wouldn't still be at war if it did, in my opinion.
