For those wondering what we were talking about in the comments earlier, Anthony Stewart Head (of...well, so many things, but people seem to know him mostly from Buffy the Vampire Slayer now, and from Merlin) in a compilation of Nescafe ads.
I'm just waiting for Sally to drive L home. (Or not. Apparently he's given her the slip.) He wanted to know how one knew, hypothetically, when stitches were necessary. She said he'd cut himself, he implied someone else had done it for him. "Just a bit of a slice," he says. We'll see.
And here I thought the big excitement of my day would be my ex-girlfriend stopping by out of the blue. Possibly more on that subject after I look at L's hand.

Did you get the other message? I posted as him - I forget his computer is logged in to his account.
He's escaped, anyway. I half hope he falls under a bus to teach him a lesson. But his new bike is too pretty for such a fate.
Anyway, what happened was he tried to stop someone slamming a door on us, and his hand went through the glass. I washed out the cut with some eye wash, couldn't see any glass in it. Bandaged him up. Hope he reaches you for some proper treatment.
Sally - Yeah, I saw, thanks. Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be fine.
Ah, thanks. That's a much more reassuring summary of the situation than "how do you tell if you need stitches, hypothetically".
It was quite deep, on the fleshy bit where your palm joins your thumb, and around to the side by his wrist. And there was enough blood to drip everywhere. He's changed his shirt, so don't take that being clean as evidence.
...Right, got it. Thank you, again. He's got to be the only person I know who would hide evidence of crimes committed against him.
Ex girlfriend?? I didn't think anyone knew where you lived?
Just locking the bike up. Still alive.
People who are allowed to donate blood do survive losing a full pint, with no side effects, and I didn't lose THAT much. Although I might have undone a bit of Sal's work riding home. Feels a bit...squelchy.
I didn't think they did either. Apparently I was wrong. I suppose she might've asked Harry.
Yeah, but they usually get juice and biscuits or something before they're sent off. Squelchy? That's a very...vivid description. Sherlock wants to know if he can watch while I stitch you up.
(Sherlock is, of course, watching. Although Danger is still doing that Doctor-noise of humming and saying things might hurt as he pokes my poor abused flesh about. He doesn't generally hurt when doing that...but today may be an exception.)
Just when things were quieting down, hypothetical stitches and ex-girlfriends arise. I hope the squelchiness is easily treated and the ex-girlfriend wasn't too traumatising.
(L-you've won the contest for shittiest day. Max just bounced in from school, all smiles. We're still going to the doctor and therapist tonight, but it looks like tweaking, not disaster recovery.)
My day wasn't that bad! It may be about to get worse. Danger has 'gone to fetch something'. I don't think Doctors ever say that and mean something nice...
cranky - I'm very glad to hear Max is all right.
L - you'd better be typing that with only one hand.
I am, promise. Can't move my other one, Sherlock has his face as close to it as possible, with a magnifying glass. He wants to know if he can pull the edges apart again to see inside me. And what would happen if he put something in the cut and then you sewed it in. Something like a...seed, he says. Would it grow?
What are you fetching? An entire operating theatre?
Tell him no, but if he eats watermelon seeds he'll grow watermelon vines out his ears. (What? It's what my mum told me.)
Found it, back in a sec.
Danger has 'gone to fetch something'
Maybe you get a lollipop for being a brave boy. *wink*
Sorry you hurt yourself. Maybe you use your foot to stop doors next time?
Wow, John, your day does sound pretty interesting, if nothing else.
Oh and the ex was fine, very nice, just wanted to give me a plant.
'very nice'? And bringing you gifts? Why can't I have exes like that? (Well, I hope she wasn't TOO nice.)
Don't hurt me...
(And if you tell me it's 'just a little prick', I KNOW you're lying. haha)
mazarin - he'll doubtless have something for me to suck on, if I am a good boy. And I used my foot too. Didn't realise it was glass - it was all painted over. then smash.
There, all sewn up. Wasn't that bad, was it? I don't have a lollipop, but I could get takeaway?
I know Lestrade can't be too badly hurt if he's still innuendoing all over the place...and with one hand, too; nicely done! The wound description is making ME feel faint, though. I don't know how you deal with things like that so calmly, John, especially when it's someone you care about. Nerves of steel!
Not sure what's making me giggle more - the thought of the look on Lestrade's face hoping for "something to suck on" for being a good boy and being offered a takeaway instead, or the idea of John's ex reading the Florist story and bringing John a plant.
I can cook.
Thirdbird - I can innuendo with no hands, believe me.
And no, it wasn't that bad. I give you an 8.5/10. But why does the aneasthetic hurt so bloody much? If it's meant to be the thing that stops the pain, why not make it painless?
Nameless - My face, as always, looks innocent. Takeaway was a bit of a let down though, after what i was thinking of.
Ha! Hadn't thought the reason Danger's ex brought him a plant (little tree thingy) was because of the story! Clearly his career as an author stretches further back than i thought.
Thirdbird - it really wasn't that bad. Bad enough he's not riding his bike to work tomorrow, but on the whole pretty minor. (He's making faces at me as I type this and suggesting it was bad enough and he deserves something for being so good in the face of intense squelchy pain.)
L - ...are you sure you want to cook though? And not just, you know, sit down and perhaps rest a bit?
It was not because of the story!
The possible story connection makes me very curious what TYPE of plant it is.
What?? Why can't I ride! (How will you stop me?).
I do, clearly, deserve something, not only for being brave, but also for you taking eons to do it all because you were explaining every bit to Sherlock! I'm a brave little example.
S'pose I could rest. and type your new chapter out.
How do you know it waant the story? did you say to her 'hello, love, oh, a plant? is this because i'm writing a story about myself and my new boyfriend, set in a florists shop?' betya didn't.
Anon - it's a bonsai something. I'm probably going to kill it, no idea how to look after it. She's going to Australia so she can't take it with her.
L - you can't ride because it'll put too much strain on the stitches and also (though I suspect this will be my least convincing argument) it will hurt! You won't be as safe riding with that much pain; you'll be favoring your hand and your mind won't be 100% on the traffic. And I will stop you by hiding your keys if necessary.
Of course you can ride!
Might depend on which hand it is though, clutch or brake as to how well...
I did a 2 hour ride the day I got an over-the-elbow cast off, never underestimate the need of a biker for the medicine of a bike!
(It was on for 5 weeks. I told the doc he was taking it off or I was, as the bike withdrawal symptoms were killing me.)
Given Lestrade's clear familiarity with certain kinds of the written word, I'm sure he has had a lot of practice doing things one handed.
My face, as always, looks innocent
I actually believe you. I'm guessing that you get more innocent-looking the filthier you're pretending not to be.
What?? Why can't I ride! (How will you stop me?).
... and al you're missing there is "You're MEAN" :-p
And I see you digging through your jacket pockets over there - don't bother, I've already got them.
but I rode home, before you'd evem done anything! (you are mean)
Rider - left hand. You tell the Doc.
I msy stamp my foot.
And now I have done something and you're not mucking it up! You can stamp your foot if you like; it'll get you as far as it gets Sherlock. I am horribly mean, just ask him. It's only for a little while.
how am I going to get to work tomorrow??
And I got blood on one of my favourite shirts. I would give it to Mrs H, but don't want to cause her any trauma, reliving removing bloodstains from things.
Clutch hand? Easy!
Just a nice slow ride, won't have to squeeze too often if you can get a good rhythm going, no shooting off too quickly.
Might get a louder noise than you are used to if you aren't tickling the lever as much as usual, but you can cope I'm sure.
I bet Sally will come and fetch you if you ask nicely.
I can do your shirt, I'm pretty good at getting blood out of things. Did you bring it with you?
Ha! Thanks, Rider. Danger, are you listening? I'm going to offer Sherlock incentives to return my keys to me. If anyone can, he can.
And I left the shirt at work, soaking in salt water. DIdn't want you to see it and worry...
After that last comment, I suspect you and Rider of being the same person. No shooting off too quickly??
I was worried from the second you asked me about your hypothetical stitches. The blood could only have been reassuring, as any solid information would've been.
...That sounds snippy, but I don't mean it that way. Just, you know, I can tell the difference between a worrying amount of blood and a non-worrying amount. I've had plenty of practice.
I'm not the one with the alter ego, Danger-Jilly Cooper.
I think any situation where I can ask about hypothetical anything shouldn't be too worrying. It's when Sal asks you want to worry.
And I imagine 'worry amount' rather changes depending on who you're worried about. I do promise I will take myself to A&E if I'm worried. And have done, last time - and look where that got me! A million hour long wait.
Come here and give us a cuddle. And you won;t kill that plant. It's really nice. Between the four of us, I'm sure we can keep it going.
You're a bad influence on him/her then.
All right.
If I'm forbidden from riding, I assume I'm.also forbidden from.showering (alone) going to come and help me?
After watching that montage, I heartily agree with your assessment of them as twee, Lestrade. One more strained allusion to coffee and I don't know what I would have done (well all right, I would have muted it and just stared at Tony Head. Mrrr).
He only gets better with age, though. You're not the only silver fox about, Lestrade, though you certainly are a prime example of such. ;)
Tony Head as Giles singing in Buffy (hope the link works as I'm writing this on my phone):

Nicely done stealing his keys, Danger, though you may want to get in and bribe Sherlock before L does, or he may indeed make off with the keys for him!
L - yep. See? There's some compensation.
X - he does sing nicely. I like the knife throwing as well.
My favorite bit of Tony Head singing as Giles comes from Restless, where he sings the exposition, and includes this gem of a line, which seems appropriate to your day: "Try not to bleed on the couch/I just had it steam-cleaned."

"Try not to bleed on the couch/I just had it steam-cleaned."
God, that's like a summary of my life. Maybe I should watch this show after all.
I just saw Anthony Stewart Head at the Cabin Pressure recording I attended a few months ago, and he looks even better in person - it helped, too, that he kept being overcome by giggles as the hilarity of the scripts and performances got to him. (I wonder if Mrs. Holmes was there and could back me up on this?)
Lestrade, you naughty boy, let John take care of you and be a good sport if Sally gives you a well-deserved ass-kicking in the morning.
John - You should watch Buffy. It is brilliant, and Joss Whedon (the creator) is God.
Lestrade - Listen to the nice doctor and stay off the bike for now!
Innie, there are just SO MANY things in this sentence that I want to know more about: I just saw Anthony Stewart Head at the Cabin Pressure recording I attended a few months ago, and he looks even better in person.
First of all, YOU GOT TO GO TO A LIVE CABIN PRESSURE RECORDING? Can you feel the waves of jealousy coming at you through the computer? Omg, I love that show.
Second, MORE CABIN PRESSURE IS COMING OUT? I don't follow the news for it, and so the last Christmas special was delightful. I'd have thought BC might be too busy with other commitments to do more.
THIRDLY, AND THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT: ARE YOU MEANING TO IMPLY THAT TONY HEAD IS GOING TO BE IN CABIN PRESSURE?
John, sorry to get capslock all over your comments. But this is clearly very important, heee. Cabin Pressure is where your book game comes from, if you've yet to listen to it. Lots of fun.
Also, yes, Giles does look lovely throwing knives about. He also uses crossbows and swords throughout the series, and has some extreme BAMF moments. He and Spike (the vampire, played by James Marsters, who also has a lovely voice) are two fab reasons to watch that show.
Lestrade and I are not the same person.
The way we choose to express ourselves may have something to do with the leather...
(Oh and you do know that bikes and padlocks come with spare keys don't you. You should thoroughly search Lestrade for them.)
Hey, X, I have answers for you! But I don't want to spoil anyone here, so I'll just direct you to this post: http://innie-darling.livejournal.com/184230.html.
John, you shouldn't need to bribe Sherlock, surely? Haven't you done plenty of pre-emptive bribing by letting him watch and learn as you stitched your boyfriend up?
I've been listening to Cabin Pressure on and off since that trip. Love it. Just brilliant. I'm not so sure about Buffy, but I'll consider it.
Rider - sorry! It's your way with innuendo. Impressive. And oh, now you're on my side? Heh. I know where he keeps his spares, and they're still there, so I assume he's going along with this more or less of his own free will.
Innie - Good point! I am absolutely going to point that out to him tomorrow when we start the epic battle over chores.
X, I have never heard of Cabin Pressure, but your comment alone makes me want to find out more.
Becca - you can get it here for quite cheap:
http://www.audiogo.co.uk/search?q=cabin+pressure&x=0&y=0&sort=score%2520desc
Definitely worth it.
L - Please be good and stay off the bike until Danger says you're good to ride. You don't want to scrape the nice new bike (or your nice, still newer than mine, hide) by riding when you're not up to it. I think I've mentioned I'm a worrier.
I do think that Doctor Danger should provide a reward for your being a good patient and letting him demonstrate to Intern Sherlock how to stitch up an injury. Maybe one of those nice plants he talked about in his note to you today. ;-)
Ah, Mr. Head. One of the best reasons to watch Buffy. Most of the time, he was so tweedy and restrained, but every once in a while, he'd BAMF out on them. Gorgeous to look at, a wonderful voice, and I'll admit a weakness for a British accent.
Max is OK. We'll be keeping a closer-than-normal eye on him for a while, but we don't have to worry worry. (I worry no matter what.)
What's Cabin Pressure?
Thanks for the link, innie, though it didn't make me any less jealous! :P
Becca, it's a great radio show about a tiny little airline and the comic mishaps they have. The captain is rather hapless, his first officer and the woman who owns the airline very canny and sarcastic. And the steward is just a great laugh. This of course results in hi-jinks and lots of fun games (like the book titles one). It's very pithy and a good laugh -- I'd highly recommend it!
You can probably find it on iTunes; it's most certainly floating around the internet as well if you wanted to sample an episode before buying anything. :)
It is most definitely floating around YouTube - I am enjoying the first episode right now.
And thank you John for the link! Three dollars is about what I can afford right now, and this will be a nice addition to my subway commute.
I'd listen to it right now if I had earphones. Bad night for sleep apparently.
Oh, boy do I know those. Somehow my subconscious has decided that the best way to avoid nightmares is to not sleep, which results in me waking up from nightmares anyway and getting even less sleep than if I'd just gone to bed.
I shall just silk quietly at not being allowed my bike, but assume you know best.
Hope you manage to get some sleep when the boys have gone to school/classes.
Innie - I don't see how I deserve an arse kicking from anyone, let alone Sal!
John - you should definitely watch Buffy. Did you ever get Lestrade to watch Firefly? Both from Joss Whedon, and a lot of the same creative team involved in the production. Personally I think the later seasons of Buffy are much better than the early seasons.
Somehow I've also missed out on Cabin Pressure entirely, despite having heard quite a bit about it from various people. May have to investigate.
Lestrade - maybe because after she sorted out your hand for you, she was going to give you a lift home but you sneaked off and ran away like a little kid and then pulled the cut open again? Perhaps?
Nameless - she had a date to get ready for! She did not need to be transporting me through rush hour traffic, in the wrong direction from her place. and Danger said it was minor, anyway.
And no, dodged the bullet on Firefly so far. It really doesn't sound like my kind of thing.
John - might go back to mine tonight. I'll only be doing boring paperwork all night, and it means if you wake up you can do whatever you want without worrying about me.
Any idea why you couldn't sleep last night?
L - If you want to, but don't do it on my account. Please.
Just...overly vivid dreams.
I don't know yet. Haven't quite decided. It's not just because you deserve a good night's sleep though, don't worry.
You could have woken me though. If you thought it might help.
Almost did. It feels like giving in to it though.
I know. But still sort of doing my best to share stuff with you. Most of the time. Like you wanted.
It's not the same though. Is it? Maybe it is.. If it is do I get to ask you to come home tongiht? Because I really want you to. Sorry. I think I got about 30min sleep all night, feel like I'm not making a lot of sense.
I don't know. I mean if it's the same. I definitely won't know if you don't tell me.
You don't need to barter for a reason to ask me to come to yours. I just don't think I'll be very good company for you or the boys. But if you want me to I will.
I really do.
Sorry, didn't mean to sound so grumpy.
Bryan's been in touch. I'm not in the best state of mind.
didn't mean to sound so grumpy.
If you did, I didn't notice, so don't worry about it.
Ah. Bad news?
We're meeting up next week. Start discussing what he wants.
Only bad news in the sense I'd rather throw myself off the roof than see him again. Good that it's another step toward the end.
I'm sorry, love. It's just a completely shitty situation. I'll come with if you want? Or not if you don't, or anything else you can think of that might help.
Don't worry, I got into this mess on my own.
We're meeting in public, all that, so i'll be safe enough. And i'll make sure he doesn't slip any roofies in my drink. Maybe get Mrs H to tag me or something, just in case. You can track me down like a lost dog then.
Do you think any of that's likely? You could take someone else if you don't want to take me.
Well. I would find you, obviously, if anything were to happen, whether it was Bryan responsible or not. Not sure 'like a lost dog' is the comparison I'd make though.
