someday i'll stop posting in the middle of the night

Not tonight, however. I did sleep a bit though, and I'm going back to bed right after this.  Promise.

So, today there was this:

The Red Arrows
The boys were both very excited, and there was a lot of talk about flying planes, which degenerated into Sherlock being angry that Mycroft got to steer one once briefly when he was eight. And then we got kites that look like planes, and all differences were resolved.

I flew one too for a while, but most of my afternoon was spent lying prone in the grass, and it was absolutely as nice as I'd thought it might be. Nice to rest the leg too. It's really been just complete crap the last few days, almost dumped me floor this morning making tea.

L joined us for some kite flying (and mended Mycroft's kite after Deimos caught it). I was thinking while I was watching them... Things have been a bit strained between us the past few days. But I'm daily so deeply grateful to have him in my life I don't even know how to say it.

Well. Like that, I suppose.

Dawww, love.

Sounds like you guys had a nice time, I'm glad.

I'm just boggled that L had kite-mending gear available!

I thought modern bikes had toolkits composed of a screwdriver made of putty and the phone number of a pickup service.

(I ride old Italian bikes, so I have a toolkit big enough to rebuild the motor by the side of the road and a minimum of 20 feet of duct tape...)

Another poll that needs more options! The answer is unfortunately situational. My hedge answer would be that violence does tend to solve problems in the immediate short-term, but not necessarily in the long-term sense.

Sounds like a great time. I am sincerely jealous of Mycroft too, I admit. Flying a plane at 8 or any age would be fantastic.

I was undecided on the poll today, but I remembered a bit of dialogue from a funny little story I read once.

"Then this might be a good time to hear about our next latest invention. It's an automatic room cleaning device."
"And that will help me how?"
"It is a powerful explosive device."
"How is that supposed to clean a room?"
"If a room no longer exists, one couldn't say it was dirty now could they?"

A bit metaphorical, but mostly just hilarious.

(Note: This is NOT a suggestion, Sherlock.)

(I MEAN IT.)

You should have told me your leg was playing up.

Although I can understand why you didn't.

But I'm daily so deeply grateful to have him in my life I don't even know how to say it.

I'm grateful to have you and the boys in my life, too. And I know I haven't done a good job of showing or saying that recently. And I will try to do better. And it may be a cliche, but it really isn't you, it's me.

And sorry for leaving at an ungodly hour this morning, but I just couldn't sleep. It does mean I'll probably finish by lunchtime. Hopefully I'll be able to take a day off in the week, too - maybe we could go somewhere, get out of the city, while the boys are at school/classes?

I hope you do get to take a break this week, L - it sounds like you really need it! Virtual hugs to both you and John.

Kite-flying in the park sounds wonderful. I saw a kid with a kite on the beach the other day, and I was most jealous...

The word-verification just called me 'pudgie'. LOL!

Sounds like a lovely afternoon :-)

Not an easy poll to answer, especially for someone who was raised to "hit him back". My relatively limited experience tells me that on a personal level, violence produces an immediate change, which might be for better or worse, but long term doesn't help at all. On a global scale, it seems to depend (eg, not sure how else Nazism would have been stopped, but equally I'm unconvinced that violence helps to combat terrorism, and may perhaps help those who seek to radicalise the disaffected). Hmm, that got a bit heavy for a Sunday, didn't it? Sorry.

Rider - kites didn't require an entire engine re-build, happily. We used wooden coffee stirrers (no, I can't imagine how so many ended up in my pockets), the pointless nylon tie from the bottom of Mycroft's rain jacket, and some plasters - because John is always prepared for first aid. Even for kites.

Nameless - I went for no. I've never seen anything 'solved' by violence. Stopped, yes, but never solved.

Lestrade - Right, now you've put it like that, yeah, I think it's the difference between "stopped" and "solved" that I was maybe trying to think of. Thank you for putting it much more concisely and eloquently than I did :-)

Put it down to years of trying to find the balance between 'reasonable force', not getting your head kicked in, and avoiding having a complaint filed against you.

I've stopped plenty of things happening by using violence - and it's only ever been the start of my troubles!
