as requested

One year today, I let Dr E bully me into starting this blog, mainly because it was easier than doing anything else she wanted me to do, like discuss my feelings or get on with my life.

...It seems to have worked unexpectedly well. Good job, Dr E.

And you started the blog, where you proceeded to both talk about your feelings AND get on with your life. Exceptionally well done, John.

Between Dr E and Mrs H I didn't get much of a choice! Glad it worked out this way though.

Happy Blogday, love.

On the way home. Has Sherlock exploded with excitement yet? And will he help me cook? (you can too...of course.)

Elizabeth said...

Thank you for keeping your blog going so long! I know I'll appreciate it as long as you have time to update it between floss emergencies, Mrs. H's holiday kidnappings, and morgue excursions.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - no spontaneous human combustion as of yet, and we'd both be happy to help you cook.

Elizabeth - they are rather like kidnappings, aren't they? And that was how I met her. She ought to do a book. Kidnapping for Fun and Profit.

Greg Lestrade said...

right. locking bike up.

Am I to expect to be hit by a Sherlock shaped tornado when I walk in the door.

Got some good news too. And some bad. But the bad's not so bad, more annoying.

Desert Wanderer said...

Been rereading the original entries, and amusingly the first mention of Lestrade was pretty much "helped him catch a serial killer." Less than a month later, it was "he's sleeping on my couch." Well done, boys.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - that's a yes on the tornado. He is bursting with whatever his mum told him and just waiting for you.

DW - ha! It did work out well, didn't it?

Greg Lestrade said...

like to point out we did manage to meet a few times, inbetween looking after the boys and working on murder cases, before I turned up on his sofa.

he just didn't blog about the nervous fumbling unsure bits inbetween

Desert Wanderer said...

That's how that happened then? You just "turned up" on his sofa one day? And all the fumbling happened before you were lying on the sofa? ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Actually, in a roundabout sort of a way, Sherlock got me on a Christmas shopping trip. but I wouldn't fit under the tree for John, so he just left me on the sofa instead. ;)

(fumbling was of the spoken and mental variety, not the actual hands-on variety. I'd like to think we were both old enough not to fumble that part. But neither of us had exactly been on the dating scene for a while.)

Happy Blog Day, John! It's been a pleasure getting to "know" you and the boys, and Lestrade and the team and everyone. All the best!

John H. D. Watson said...

L - ha, you're right. Best Christmas present ever.

John H. D. Watson said...

Mazarin - thank you! It's been really lovely getting to know all of you as well.

Happy Blog Day! And happy belated birthday Sherlock, sounds like you had a wonderful day!

Anon Without A Name said...

Happy blog day John :-) It's been so good getting to know you all; thank you all for sharing your lives with us.

Do we get to know what Sherlock's momentous news is? Do we get to find out what Lestrade good/annoying news is?

Greg Lestrade said...

So...this Christmas, will you put up with me for the whole festive season? My team might fall over in shock when I don't volunteer for Christmas Day. But...well, I wouldn't want to miss it.

And on a barely related note, think I might have found someone to rent my flat. Already. Which is amazing and brilliant.

Happy Blog Day, John! It's been such a pleasure getting to know you all a bit through your adventures, and letting us enjoy them vicariously.

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless - good news as above. Obviously he hasn't seen the place yet, but one of the DCs from another team is looking for somewhere, to move in with his girlfriend, and Sal mentioned I was going to be letting my flat. It would be good to rent it out to another copper.

Annoying news, which I'm completely refusing to let dent my mood of ongoing birthday celebrations, is that Bryan has raised - or lowered - himself to new levels of arseholery.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - I would be more than happy to 'put up with' you. Let's see if we can get through the holidays without Sherlock getting arrested this time.

That's brilliant news about the flat, and obviously not so brilliant news about Bryan. Do you want to talk about it?

Nameless and Pip - thank you. I really never expected to meet such wonderful people here. I think I had a rather hazy view of the internet being populated with teenagers and criminals. Glad to be wrong.

Sherlock said...

He NEVER wants to talk about it. I could make Bryan a stink bomb. I can make one better than before now.

Greg Lestrade said...

by 'put up with' I really mean 'allow me to cook for you and shower you with gifts'. :)

As far as I'm concerned, Bry is getting more desperate and therefore more malicious. Having failed to rile me about 'being too scared to go through with the meeting' and, I think, realising that he really isn't going to get anything out of me, he's now decided the only reason I can possibly want to get the dissolution is because I want to marry you. So now he's refusing to agree to the dissolution at all. Wanker.

(You mean this lot aren't all teenage criminals?)

Greg Lestrade said...

And no, Sherlock, because whatever you do, you will cause this flat to stink in the process. And by 'better', I presume you mean 'worse'.

Anyway, it's fine, a little more complicated, but fine. Might even be shot of him by Christmas. Which would be a bloody nice present.

John H. D. Watson said...

'allow me to cook for you and shower you with gifts'.

You know, I thought you might mean something like that. ;) I will endeavor to cook as well, but I'll probably do better with the gifts.

Can he do that?

Small Hobbit said...

Happy Blog Day John. It's been great getting to know you all.

I'd like to think I'm a teenager, but my birth certificate tells me otherwise.

innie said...

You started your blog a few days before I was laid off, and checking the blog and commenting on it quickly became one of the rewards I allowed myself after a long, soul-sucking day of job-hunting (would that I had had Mrs. H kidnapping me and introducing me to two extraordinary boys that drank up love like thirsty little sponges). So thank you, John, for being brave and sharing your life with us - you helped me through some rotten times.

Sherlock, when are you going to make a masterpiece with your nee Italian colored pencils?

L - Bryan is reprehensible. I know you know tgat, but I just needed to say it.

Greg Lestrade said...

If we're going to go all out on the Christmas food front, everyone will be cooking. I'm sure Mycroft will want to, as well.

And yes, he gains nothing from doing it, other than my misery, but I suspect that's enough.

Just means instead of going to court and arguing about money (I think his brief has persuaded him he's onto a loser), as we would if he agreed to it, I now have to prove my side of things, to provide the court with a reason for a dissolution. Which means standing up and telling a roomful of people things I'd really rather no one knew about. He can't stop the dissolution. Just make my life harder, and cost us both more money in legal fees.

Sherlock said...

And by 'better', I presume you mean 'worse'.

Yes! Really really really stinky!

Innie, I tried to draw my bug with them but it didn't come out right. I will try again later. It's a good bug.

John H. D. Watson said...

What a bastard. I just don't understand how someone gets like that. I'm sorry, love.

Greg Lestrade said...

Shortstuff, once we get back from our weekend away (you going to tell people about your mum's letter?) then John or I will sort you out your own bit of blackboard in your room so you can use your new chalky pens in there. And stop using them on the fridge. And the cupboards. And the windows. And...well, anywhere, apart from your blackboard.

No stink bombs, at all though. I don't care who you want to inflict them on.

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger - it's okay. I mean, it's not, but it won't last much longer. Just drives home how lucky I am now, and how good it'll be to be rid of him.

Sherlock, bed time. And if you go quietly with no fuss I promise I'll spin you around like a 'plane again tomorrow. If I ever stop being dizzy from today.

Sherlock said...

But you put my drawings on the fridge anyway! This way you don't need magnets.

The letter!!! We're going on an aeroplane!!! Why is it airport but aeroplane and not airplane? I don't know where we're going because she said I would tell everyone and I WOULDN'T I didn't say ANYTHING about it until you got home! But I don't care because we're FLYING THERE and I want to steer the plane like Mycroft got to.

Greg Lestrade said...

but the fridge will fill up if you just draw straight on it. Then we'll have to rub some out. If we put paper pictures up there then even when they come off, we can keep them. The pens are for you to use when you just want to practice or doodle or write yourself or us messages. The pencils are for your real drawings.

I...presume it's something to do with aerodynamics? Or...I don't know, probably Latin. Most things are Latin. Or Greek. Ask Mycroft. Or someone else here.

You'll have to ask the pilot very very politely if he'll let you into the cockpit.

Danger - any idea what we should pack?

John H. D. Watson said...

She said the weather shouldn't be too different from here, so I assume we're not going far. Although with her, who knows.

Innie - glad to be of service, and I'm really happy you found work again. I know I hated having nothing to do, and sounds like you did as well. Is the new job still going well?

Sherlock said...

I think we're going to BORNEO or The Amazon, because I want to see a shrunken head.

Greg Lestrade said...

I...would think that's quite a long way to go for a weekend, Sherlock. So probably not.

And the only place you're going is TO BED.

Sherlock said...

With a story?

Greg Lestrade said...

I have no idea how you can have this much energy at the end of the day. Where do you get it, and can I have some?

Yes, with a story if you want.

Danger - as long as it's somewhere nice, with a comfy bed that I can spend plenty of time in with you.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm sure it will be. I find it difficult to picture her camping willingly. I need to ask her if we're taking the dogs, don't let me forget.

Greg Lestrade said...

Do you think the dogs will take to flying?

I imagine Mycroft has already asked that question...he seemed to know about it before Sherlock did.

With Sherlock I always have a fear we'll end up somewhere like...a tree house. Or a nuclear bunker. Or somewhere not conducive to comfort and large double beds.

John H. D. Watson said...

Maybe a lighthouse? :)

Becca said...

Sherlock, aeroplanes take off from airports because the British insist on spelling things oddly. :)

Did you know that no one quite understands how planes stay up in the air? There are equations that are used to make planes that fly, but they haven't been proved, mathematically. It's a big math mystery, and there's a big prize if anyone can solve it!

Greg Lestrade said...

That would be pretty cool. Provided it was all done out posh. Not if it was still kitted out for a few lonely light house keepers.

Lindsay said...

Sherlock- Don't ask me. I'm American and we say/spell it airplane. :)

Exciting news all around, except of course for Bryan, the spiteful little rat. Do you think he really means to take it all the way to court, or is he just playing trial chicken with you, and will back off when he realizes you aren't going to give up?

Happy Blog-birthday! So much can change in one year, and I'm glad it was for the better in all your lives. *hugs to all*

John - I hope you get some personal time with Greg this weekend, along with time with the boys.

Greg - I'm so sorry to hear about Byran being an idiot. A marriage is a partnership of equals, not one spouse owning another, body, heart and soul. If you ever need a frying pan...

You're trending on Twitter, John!

OK so it's actually some F1 commentator called John Watson but it's still cool!

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha! There's too many John Watsons out there. My parents should've named me Pierre or something. (Glad they didn't.)

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad they didn't, too. I've never met another John Watson. Especially not a John Danger Watson.

innie said...

Sherlock, I'm glad you have a good bug.

John, it wasn't so much being laid off from my last job that bothered me - I wasn't happy there, in large part because I hated my boss. It was feeling helpless, being without a job for the first time since I was thirteen, knowing I'd done everything "right" and was still let go. And it didn't help that a lot of the job ads I saw said explicitly that people who were unemployed would not be considered. I feel very lucky to have found this job, and to be busy again and be working with people I actually like.

Wow, that got long. All I really wanted to say was thanks!

John H. D. Watson said...

people who were unemployed would not be considered

...What, seriously? What is wrong with people?

Becca said...

Yeah, it's pretty common over here. Employers assume if you're unemployed there's something wrong with you. Having a job proves that you're employable.

I'm mostly shocked they were being honest about it.

Dottie said...

As someone 'actively seeking employment' in the UK I find that absolutely staggering! To just flat-out not consider anyone who's currently unemployed... *shakes head*

I'm pretty sure that would be against the law over here as we have a lot of 'equal opportunities' legislation. I dare say it doesn't stop prejudice at the individual employer level though - they just have to go through the motions of seeming fair.

Becca said...

It's not exactly legal here, either. Nor is discriminating based on where you live, but it's extremely common. I would see job ads all the time saying not to apply if you didn't live in the same neighborhood as the business.

John H. D. Watson said...

That just seems completely mad. Surely they're limiting their pool of potential employees an awful lot - people who already have jobs but hate them enough to want to leave? How does that benefit anyone?

Greg Lestrade said...

Of course... a certain nanny here was employed in a method which breaks UK employment laws. But a. I'm not going to argue and b. given them employer, I'm definitely not going to argue...

But Innie, that does sound insane. And I'm glad you've got a job you like now.

John H. D. Watson said...

Employment via kidnapping probably is illegal, yes. Although no one forced me to get in the car, technically.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm assuming she didn't advertise the post, then interview to choose the candidate most suitable for the role, either.

Chose the right bloke, definitely...but fairly sure no advert ever existed. What could it possibly have said, to encompass the role...?

John H. D. Watson said...

...I can't even imagine.

Greg Lestrade said...

I doubt it would have enticed many applicants, anyway.

Anyway, I should thank her, not shop her to the authorities.

And...remembering she reads these, I won't, Ma'am, promise.

I'm a bit of a lurker (been getting to know you, Lestrade and the boys through the blog archives) and wanted to say congrats on blogging for a year (even though I know you're pushing three years now).

It's been a pleasure hearing about your lives thus far and I will continue to plod my way through the past.
