r. hero, p. taker

Right, I think I said I'd talk about Sherlock's Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, although really it was only from about three in the afternoon on. Mrs T had him for the first part, and I'm surprised she didn't call me sooner.

It wasn't so much the yelling, kicking, loudly objecting to life, the universe, and everything. That's not all that uncommon for him. It was the duration. Usually there's a short period of that followed by crying, sniffling, and hugs, but it was like he couldn't get past that this time.

I did actually call my mum, but she could never even deal with Harry's moods, and frankly Sherlock's a lot more challenging, so I listened to you lot instead. Closed the curtains, dimmed the lights, turned off the telly and all that. Eventually he asked me why I was just sitting there in the dark, that was stupid, why weren't we watching tennis or anything.

I said I just wanted to sit quietly for a bit. He wanted to know why, and I said the day seemed a bit overwhelming, which was absolutely true by that point, and that it'd be nice if he'd come and sit with me. I thought he was going to go with his favorite answer of the afternoon ("NO!!"), but he climbed up to sit in my lap and I wrapped a blanket around us and things got better from there. Not great, but definitely better.

*

And now for something completely different. You may be sorry you watched it, you may doubt the ITF's sanity, but... No, there's no but. Just those first two. I'm just spreading around the mental trauma by linking it really.

Wow, that is possibly the most bizarre video I've seen since five minute long Bollywood inspired Indian condom PSA that included men in giant condom costumes, singing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKnAe3IB0cY

Glad things improved with Sherlock. I know when I get to that point, I don't often have the ability left to do the things that will help me, and I'm an adult. So he's lucky to have you.

John Danger Watson: Lover, Doctor, SuperNanny, and Educator of Blog Readers on the Wonders of Anti-Doping Tests. I'm living and learning the John Watson Way. I think I'd take the blood test, if it meant I didn't have to pee in front of a stranger.

All the tennis talk on your blog made me think I might actually try to watch some, although being over 10 hours ahead would mean sitting up late. However, I have discovered it's no longer broadcast on free-to-air here. No way I'm paying Foxtel stupid amounts per month for the privilege.

Oh, Sherlock, you poor little guy. Glad he's a bit better, it's been a really hard time for a 5 year old. Countdown says he's only 5 for 11 more days, though! Sherlock, do you have any ideas of what you'd like to do for your birthday?

It sounds like you got through to Sherlock - and I'm so glad he's small enough to curl up in your lap. Quiet time together is good!

I'm back off to the US Open tomorrow - Federer-Djokovich and Nadal-Murray! I wish I could bring both of you with me.

The best part of that video was that it was real. Three times while watching it I double checked the URL thinking this must be a joke. But no...

Glad things are starting to calm on the Sherlock front. Hopefully things will get better over the weekend.

Awwww. Sherlock's a good kid. :)

*squishes both of you*

Glad it helped.

I've just added that video to my list of things that I really didn't need to know about, but have added something to my life (to go with how much my daughter drank to celebrate her birthday).

Hope you manage to have a good weekend, maybe involving cake?

Well. That was a thing that happened. I just...no. Can't even find the words to describe it. I'm with Ro - blood test, please!

Glad you were able to help Sherlock. Sometimes just that single-minded focus on them without distractions is all that can work.

Greg Lestrade said...

You're fantastic. Pretty sure you don't get told that enough.

How did talking with your mum go? Was she pleased to hear from you?

And I think I wish I hadn't watched that video in a crowded police station. Still, at least most of them wouldn't have understood what they heard. although that probably makes what they saw worse...

Becca - that condom PSA is…truly amazing. And actually really not bad. I bet if they showed that in schools here, kids would actually pay attention.

Ro - I'd take the blood test too, just to avoid all the waiting around. Although I suppose it depends how often they have to do it, and I think it's quite often. If you really want to watch the tennis you might try http://www.sportlemon.tv/

Innie - I'm glad about that too, though it won't last for much longer. Seems like he's growing every day. Make Federer win this match somehow please? I'd far rather see a Federer-Nadal final than anything else.

kholly - amazing, right? It ought to be a joke…

Lupe - Yeah, he is. :)

shadow - thanks. :) It helped me too.

Small Hobbit - no cake, but we did make the bronwynies. They're extremely chocolatey! Very good.

Mazarin - ha! A thing that happened, yes indeed. There are no words to describe it.

L - you are too, and I know you don't get told that enough.

It was all right. We only talked for a little while because of Sherlock, but she did invite us to come and visit - all of us.

Greg Lestrade said...

That's nice of her. If you want to, that is.

Had a better day today. Hotel I stayed at last night was nice, so did lengths in their freezing cold pool this morning until my fingers went blue. Made me feel a bit better.

Still miss you like mad though.

John H. D. Watson said...

Miss you too, love. The flat's still freakishly quiet and feels enormous, especially when Sherlock's at school.

I'm glad today was a bit better. The swim sounds nice.

Desert Wanderer said...

I wish we had the blood drawing option. I once got tagged for testing but missed the scheduled time, so I had to provide my own observer. That's when you learn who your true friends are. Or, at least, the least squeamish...

Glad to hear things are better for you guys. Hope you get home soon, Lestrade.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock better today? Added anything to the list of things I should be bringing back for him?

We had a lot of leads today - weekend brings the kids out, I suppose, so false sightings everywhere. Got nothing solid though.

I wish I knew when I might get home. All I can think of is everything we could do if you lot were here with me, not working. All the things I want to share.

John H. D. Watson said...

DW - I had to provide my own observer

Ha! I'm sorry, it's not funny I know, but...it's a little funny.

L - he still says gelato. He has a dry ice related scheme for getting it here. Also "Italian bugs" and bread. He's a bit better behavior-wise, but he's pretty clearly still on edge.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm beginning to know the feeling, poor kid.

Whatever happens, I will get back for his birthday. Even if I have to pay for flights there and back myself.

He still sleeping in with you?

Sherlock said...

You promise? Even if you didn't catch the murderer yet?

Greg Lestrade said...

I absolutely promise. Even if I have to come back to Italy after, I will be with you on your birthday. I wouldn't miss it for anything.

Sherlock said...

And we can go see Mycroft and Anthea and the dogs too? And all have cake together?

Becca said...

Dry ice is quite effective - it saved our freezer when we lost power from Irene - but I'm pretty sure it's illegal to mail. Or at least, it is over here.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock - absolutely. Lestrade, Mycroft, Anthea, dogs, and cake.

Make Federer win this match somehow please? John, I swear I tried. Nearly the whole stadium tried - it was very much a pro-Fed crowd. (There was a tiny Asian girl in front of me with roughly the same circumference as a toothpick who kept bellowing in a surprisingly carrying voice - I swear she was a bass! - "ROGER!!!!" and embarrassing the bejesus out of her fiance.) He was in control for the first two sets, then ceded the third and fourth without much of a murmur, and it looked like he had the victory all sewn up late in the fifth - he was up a couple of breaks. I think he started thinking the match was already his, and funnily enough, Djokovich seemed to think the same, mugging for applause when it seemed clear Fed would be serving for the match. But in the end Roger crumbled. I'm sorry. I wish he'd had a sparkly unicorn to ride to victory.

At least Rafa got through! He actually showed up and did a quick practice session at Arthur Ashe, from about 11:15 to 12. Then he left and took the sunshine with him. Seriously - Fed v Nole was supposed to start at 12, but we got heavy rain for about fifteen minutes instead. When we got back, there were eight industrial dryers on the court - have you seen them? They look like zambonis that have lost their way and are trying to figure out how to get back to their natural icy habitat. The match only started at 1:20, and Rafa v Murray started about ten minutes after it was done, and the day session only finished at 9:30.

Desert Wanderer - ha! I haven't had to ask, but I've been the askee. I visited a good friend in the hospital after she'd had her baby and before I could say how great she looked or how beautiful her son was, she said, "Hi! Can you tape this tube to my nipple, please?" I think the fact that I did it without fussing is the reason that baby is my godson.

I'm so pleased that Sherlock's birthday plans won't be thwarted by a cruel fate! (Though they might by Alitalia - L, DO NOT FLY THEM.) Now I can go back to counting down the days without worrying about dashed hopes.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry Sherlock, I got called out last night, only just got back to town.

We can do anything you like - within reason - for your birthday. And all those things sound great. I'm sure Mycroft will love to see you.

What sort of cake would you like?

Danger - sorry I didn't call last night or this morning. Hope you didn't worry. Was out in the forest. Going to sleep now, call you later.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - it's all right, hope you got some sleep.

Innie - God, it was awful. Especially when he broke to love and then completely faded on his own serve. I was just gutted.

I'm glad Nadal won though!

Hey John, are you watching the Rugby World Cup? It looks like it's going to be a fantastic year. The All Blacks are the favourite of course, and the statistics back them up, so I'm hoping they don't toss it in the semis.

Sherlock: You sound like you have lovely birthday plans! If I was there, I'd give you big hugs!

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, got some sleep, thanks.

Found a place we think he camped. Had the dogs and forensics all over it all night. Didn't help much, really.

Think I'll be moving again tomorrow.

Sorry Federer lost.

Anon Without A Name said...

John - hope you had a relatively peaceful weekend. How's Sherlock?

Mycroft - I hope you're settling in OK, and things are going well.

Lestrade - You do seem to be running around all over the place; I hope that means that you're getting closer to the guy.

Oh, and if you haven't been keeping up with news from home, the Gunners did at least manage a win yesterday. Against, Swansea, admittedly, but a win's a win, right? ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

A few steps behind him, unfortunately. And yeah, a win is good. Although we're still bottom half of the table, aren't we?

Anon Without A Name said...

Yeah, you are, but we're only four games in. Too early for prophecies of doom (or victory - the fact that Man U are top doesn't make me think we'll inevitably take the title... again :-p).

I've got my fingers crossed for a swift resolution to the case.

And being two places below Wigan is nothing to be ashamed of.

Anyway, hope you get a good night's sleep tonight.
