bits and pieces

L's mobile had a small accident today. He brought it home for Mycroft to dissect. Mycroft let Sherlock help him, and it kept both of them occupied for quite a while after dinner, almost right up to Sherlock's bedtime. No idea what he wants with phone innards, but I'm sure he'll do something interesting with them.

RIP

Not sure when he's getting a new one, but hopefully soon. I didn't realise how many times a day I text him until I couldn't. Not that 'last pear has rotted out underneath and mould is taking over the table' and 'wait till you see this man's moustache' are particularly vital communications. (It was an astounding moustache. I took a picture. I'd post it here, but he probably doesn't want his moustache online.)

These ants probably won't mind though.

Sherlock wants to try this as soon as possible, of course. He doesn't care how cold it is out.

All three of us went to see Lestrade play guitar at the pub tonight. Maybe next week, Anthea can come along too. And Mrs Hudson was asking about it. If we keep going like this, in a few weeks, there'll be enough of us to fill the whole place. (I told Mycroft I thought he should play something with L; he's definitely good enough, but he refused to even discuss it.)

The rockstars went home on the bike, and Sherlock and I brought home pizza and at least 10% less of Sherlock's energy, thanks to the walk, tube ride, and pizza collection. We also got free garlic rolls, thanks to Sherlock's intense and serious questions about how they were made.

What else... I've been rethinking the FME job. I'll probably still do the training course. Not entirely sure about the actual job. It's the kind of thing that's always more important than anything else you're doing, more important than you are. And I know that's why it sounded so good. Just not sure that's the best idea for me anymore.

I didn't realise how much I enjoy finding textx like that waiting when I check my phone - until I didn't have a phone I could check them on. Just the bloody flashing light telling me SOMETHING was waiting on it, secretly, un-viewable.

Those ants are cool. WHat do ants do in the winter? hibernate?

I know what you mean about the job. Whatever makes you happy is the right thing.

John H. D. Watson said...

I actually don't know. You don't see them often in the winter, do you? I need to look that up.

Yeah, it's... I'm not sure I'm capable of doing a job like that in a sane and healthy way, if you know what I mean. I'm still thinking about it.

Anonymous said...

you'd be great at any job doc but you'd probably be better with mostly living people, they'd appreciate your loveliness so much more.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's only fair to the boys that at least one of us stays sane and healthy. Ish. I just...worry you'll get bored, I suppose. I just want you to be happy.

Anon - as a (mainly) living person, I agree it's the best way to be to appreciate his loveliness.

John H. D. Watson said...

You're very kind, anon.

John H. D. Watson said...

I just want you to be happy.

I know. It's been better recently, the past few months. Maybe I'm finally adjusting to real life a bit.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's been better recently, the past few months.

Right. ANd good, I'm glad. I sort of...I know, a bit, what it's like to feel like real life is what happens to other people. Not in the same way, obviously.

I just mean I'm here, if you want to talk about stuff. anything. Or..well, obviously I'm here if you don't, either. I know a comfortable silence can be better than an awkward conversation, if it's what you need.

John H. D. Watson said...

I know you do, and it does help. Thank you. It'd be nice to talk about it a bit, yeah. Just not on here. And I suppose I'll have a better idea of what to expect after the training course - not just about the job, but about my own reactions to it.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. But no pressure. Well, except to recount the entire course to Sherlock, probably... but no other pressure.

John H. D. Watson said...

Right, obviously. I was expecting that. I'll try to take sufficiently detailed notes.

Greg Lestrade said...

I can always farm him off to another FME if you fall apart under cross-examination.

Bed? I'll even remove the old crime scene photos from your pillow if you smile sweetly...

John H. D. Watson said...

I think I can manage that. Have you got your presentation together?

Greg Lestrade said...

...feel like you're checking I've done my homework :)

Yeah, I think so. Got work for groups, got materials, got my notes... just need to remember to pack my brain in the morning, and it should be fine.

...then prep for invasion-by-Nicky-et-al tomorrow evening. They should be here...about 7ish. Bit later, maybe. Depends if they go to the hotel first or here. If Carla has her way, it'll be here...

John, when I left the military, I found it kind of like, pardon the geek reference, a Borg being cut off from the hive mind. I went from being part of a team and doing something that mattered to... well, just me.

I think most of us miss that sense of purpose and direction, no matter how much we hated the situation at the time.

I guess what I'm trying to say, clumsily, is that it's not easy to find a balance between the hive mind and just yourself. Sometimes it can take some trial and error before you find something that fits. So if the FME job isn't right for this time, then something else will come up.

I wish you luck, and a good night's sleep, for all of you.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - Ha, sorry. Only just stopped myself asking if you needed to rehearse it...

I shall make sure you don't forget your brain, don't worry.

Pip - yeah. That is a lot of it. The sense of being part of something that really makes a difference. And I know part of it is just me, the way I'm wired, that if I'm not going flat out all day long I feel like something's wrong. I hope you're right, and thank you.

I keep coming back here and typing a long comment and then deleting them. But I guess what it boils down to is...John, I have total faith that you will make the right choice for you and your family. And that if the FME job isn't it, you'll find the right thing--probably when you're least expecting to. :)

That ant photo is haunting me. They look like glass ants!

No idea what he wants with phone innards, but I'm sure he'll do something interesting with them.

That thought is haunting me as well... :D

Hope the presentation goes well L.

Best wishes to all UK drowned rats this morning - so glad I've got today off work ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Seems okay so far. No one's fallen asleep yet. Coffeebreak now.

Everyone staying wake is a good sign! :)

Anon Without A Name said...

Glad it's going well, Lestrade :-)

SH - I'm hiding indoors from the horrible wet weather. I think I preferred it freezing and beautiful, then grey, wet and windy.

John - Life always does seem to have a way of taking longer than is reasonable to sort itself out, doesn't it? I'm glad that things are better. I'm sure you'll find the FME training interesting.

pandabob said...

I'm glad the presentation is going ok Greg.

not long until the weekend of madness now ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Went very well, yeah. Except they want me to do more now! Nt sure I've got time.

But today was good. Need to get back and check on everything at the office now, then get outta there (i hope early...but I fear not!)

Mazarin said...

I sort of felt like you do/did, John. Then I went to grad school for a semester, satisfied myself I still had the brains and wherewithal to do it, then didn't go back becasue my son needed me present more than I needed that degree, and it suddenly didn't feel as important to do right then.

Sort of reminds me of that John Lennon lyric: Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans. You have to do what feels best to you, and it is sort of amazing how that seems to change all the time.

REReader said...

No more sincere applause than asking you for more of the same, L, woo hoo!

Mycroft, I don't know if you can get this book over there, but if you can, it's a really good explanation of cell/mobile phones and how they work. Some parts might be a bit obvious for you, but I think Sherlock (and maybe John!) would like it.

pandabob said...

I hope escape velocity is achieved soon Greg :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Escaping right now! Mycroft wants to make cakes (probably is making them as we speak) Sherlock, not to be outdone, wants to make biscuits. And I'd like to make food for the visitors!

John is probably cleaning up chaos as fast as the boys and dogs can make it...

pandabob said...

Brilliant :-) have a really great weekend :-)

Anonymous said...

Mmm, cakes and biscuits. I think your visitors will be very happy!

Sherlock said...

I'm making the most chocolateyist biscuits ever.

REReader said...

Yummmm!

John H. D. Watson said...

It could hardly be more chocolate without being a solid lump of chocolate.

REReader said...

And what could be nicer than that? :)

Greg Lestrade said...

be fair, they only have melted chocolate, cocoa powder, and two types of chocolate chips....

REReader said...

And what flavor is Mycroft's cake?

Mycroft said...

Lemon and olive oil.

REReader said...

That should make a nice complement. (Or palate cleanser. :))

Anon Without A Name said...

Sherlock, the chocolateyist chocolate biscuits ever sound lovely.

Mycroft - Lemon and Olive Oil cake sounds fascinating; would you be able to post a recipe at some point?

Watching the news in horror - I'm guessing everyone's kids are going to get an extra hug or two tonight.

Greg Lestrade said...

It is completely horrific, yeah.

REReader said...

I finally had to just shut off the tv and radio and newsfeeds, I couldn't any more.

Sherlock said...

Nicky's here!

pandabob said...

Its an awful thing to happen and you're right nameless lots of extra cuddles going round today.

All the baking sounds delicious, as always I am really impressed by your ideas mycroft, you too Sherlock :-)

REReader said...

Nicky's here!

Yay! (Hi, Nicky. :) *waves*)

Anonymous said...

Lemon and olive oil? I'd have to think a bit before trying that, but I expect you've made it work, Mycroft.

Sherlock, your chocolate biscuits sound wonderful.

rsf

Can't comment on the news without words I won't use here. Glad you're all together and all right, though.

Nicky said...

It's absolutely lovely. Mycroft's a very good cook.

The news is so horrible. I'm very glad this country has such strict gun laws. It's bad enough knowing Orio may find himself dealing with someone armed, let alone thinking about the kids doing it.

You just can't help but want to reach out to those families who've lost someone. Such a terrible, unimaginable, situation.

Sherlock has very kindly given me a degu to cuddle because I was upset talking about Mum to Orio.

REReader said...

Cuddling a degu does make people feel better, and Sherlock is very generous that way. (It's quite lovely, really. :))

I hope you have a good visit, all of you!

pandabob said...

I'm sorry you were upset about your Mum Nicky, I hope the degu and a nice evening have made you feel happier :-)

Mycroft said...

RSF, I think that book may be aimed at a younger audience. I only want the proximity sensors, the accelerometers and the GPS devices out of Lestrade's phone, all of which I have now. I've given the rest to Sherlock.

pandabob said...

What do you want them for Mycroft? or is it a secret?

Mycroft said...

I'm not entirely sure yet. They just seemed like they could come in handy for a project.

Perhaps tracking Sherlock, or being alerted when he goes in my room when I'm not here.

I could make a trap that captured him and hung him upside down when he got too close to my desk. After a set amount of time it could text John to come and free him. Obviously the text would remind John to bring a chair, to enable him to reach a dangling Sherlock.

pandabob said...

Oh Mycroft I do love your ideas :-)

You make me laugh so much sometimes, its nice to have you home for a bit :-)

Anonymous said...

LoL! Mycroft, you're making me wish we had cell phones when years ago. My little brother could have used a few sessions of dangling upside down.

As for the book, the publisher rates it as ages 12 and up, and at my library it's been most heavily used by students who are fifteen or older when they're researching their science projects; at nearly 200 pages its harder to get younger kids to crack it open. Not something that would deter Sherlock! I thought of it for you, though, because it's one of those rare books which has explanations you find yourself quoting whenever you're trying to get a concept through to someone who doesn't quite understand. And there's a bit of history of science in there as well.

I know you and Carla had great plans for this weekend. Does it look like you'll be able to pull some of them off? I sure hope so!

rsf

Small Hobbit said...

That seems like a very sensible plan, Mycroft. Do you need to text Lestrade as well so he can supervise John standing on the chair, because he might find the height a bit daunting?

Sherlock said...

It's a STUPID plan because Mycroft is STUPID and I don't even go in his room much.

pandabob said...

While there is still a much in that sentence I think mycroft's plan sounds like a good one Sherlock.

How's the day of fun going?

Sherlock said...

It's okay the weather is nice but grown ups talk for AGES about boring things in shops. we might go to the funfair later that would be better.

Anonymous said...

Isn't it cold for a funfair? What ride is your favorite, Sherlock?

And I think it's almost a rule that older siblings think that younger siblings are pests some of the time. I mostly liked my little brother a lot (and I still do) but we still squabble sometimes.

Kholly said...

I think when we were your ages my sister would have loved to put a trap out for me. We shared a room and I was always into her stuff. She's 8 years older than I am, her stuff was more interesting.

Anon Without A Name said...

Now how am I supposed to vote in this poll without showing undue favouritism? I haven't even been offered any suitable inducements...

Hope you all have a lovely day :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

How do you feel about chocolate cookies? Suitable?

Anon Without A Name said...

Under normal circumstance, chocolate cookies would not only be suitable, they'd be right near the top of the list preferred inducements. Alas, in this instance, there's no way for you to provide me with actual cookies... :-(

John H. D. Watson said...

Foiled again...

Anon Without A Name said...

Damn. Nothing else on offer? No incriminating photos? No recording of people singing? Nothing?

It would be such a shame if I had to vote for Triumph...

John H. D. Watson said...

I might come up with something in the way of photos...not sure how incriminating they'd be, but Nicky hasn't let me down yet.

Anonymous said...

Bribery works.

BTW, did we ever find out what Lestrade's poll was about?

pandabob said...

I voted BMW no bribery needed ;-)

I hope the afternoon was fun whether it involved funfairs or not.
