and a pear in a partridge tree

I said I'd post a picture of my bauble today, since L posted his yesterday and vividly described Sherlock's for you. It's just a little bird. I think I had a bird last year too.

Not like that. I know what you're all thinking, especially you, L.

Mycroft's are in the background. He got a bunch of tiny little pears and berries on wires that you can weave into the branches. Very tasteful.

The persistent cold and damp hasn't been doing my shoulder any good, but today was mostly an inside day, except for walking the dogs (and Sherlock). Tea, a good book, an endless supply of baked goods from Mrs Hudson's flat, both boys relatively calm...

Of course, there was the inevitable moment when we got back from the walk and both dogs and Sherlock tried to shake themselves dry at the same time, and Mycroft had to curl over his computer to keep it dry and the resultant you did that on purpose / you were SITTING THERE on purpose. It's convenient that sibling fights don't actually have to make sense. Otherwise you'd run out of things to argue about eventually.

Not like that, eh? Wonder what Freud would say about you choosing birds every year...

Can give your shoulder a rub, if you want? You might feel like you're having a long day tomorrow...

John H. D. Watson said...

Next year, I'll get that police merman one...

That'd be nice, thanks. Keeping Sherlock from spontaneously combusting with excitement, you mean?

Greg Lestrade said...

Much more fitting. Unless the 'hanging from a tree' part is also symbolic...

And yeah, he was getting fairly uncontainable until Mrs H suggested the cards tonight.

I wanted to sort out a nice dinner for us but...well, seems like you'll be left to your own devices. Traditional Italian pizza, instead of tradition Italian feast of the 7 fishes?

John H. D. Watson said...

I could do something, possibly. Definitely not seven fishes, but at least one or two. Do you know when you'll be home?

Greg Lestrade said...

Not really. depends when I get away from the yard - early, I hope - and if Mum's up for a chat or not. Plus, naturally, whether the motorway is underwater and full of morons.

John H. D. Watson said...

I got your mum a card. I didn't know if it'd make things worse to give it to her? But anyway, you can take it along, or not.

Plus, naturally, whether the motorway is underwater and full of morons.

I feel at least one of those things will be true.

Do you know how to cook octopus? I know Sherlock would enjoy it, and then maybe Mycroft could do salmon or something.

REReader said...

I like both the bird and the fruit baubles, very pretty!

I sorry you're hurting, John.

Greg Lestrade said...

That's...amazingly kind of you. I'll definitely take it and give it to her.

You could make an octopus stew. Serve it over pasta if you want (and if it goes horribly wrong, just eat the pasta with a simple sauce.)

Garlic, herbs, seasoning, tomatoes, onions, white wine and octopus. cook on low for about an hour, hour and a half, chuck over some big pasta - whatever we've got in the cupboard.

Greg Lestrade said...

SHould mention that you should fast-boil the octopus for about 2 mins, then sauté it, first.

John H. D. Watson said...

All right, that sounds simple enough. I'll give it a shot, and if nothing else, it'll give Sherlock bits of octopus to look at. We'll make something that reheats too, in case you're back late.

RR - thanks. Don't worry, it's not so bad.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock will remind you, at least once every ten minutes, that I said he could stay up until I was back...

John H. D. Watson said...

I am quite sure he will...

Ready for bed?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah.

I'm struggling for the Christmas cheer a bit this year. 24 hours to turn that around, right?

John H. D. Watson said...

Plenty of time. I'm sure Mrs Hudson's jumper will help.

Or at least, I think you'll feel better after you've gone to see your mum, if nothing else because it'll be done.

Greg Lestrade said...

yeah, you're right, I'm sure.

C'mon, one shoulder rub coming up. With lavender oil?

John H. D. Watson said...

You're too good to me.

Greg Lestrade said...

And you're too good for me ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Pfft! And by pfft, I mean bed. I may be asleep before you even start on my shoulder.

Greg Lestrade said...

well..massage will probably still help, even if you sleep through it.

John H. D. Watson said...

Mm. Love you.

Greg Lestrade said...

love you too.

now sleep, little Danger, sleep.

Anonymous said...

I hope you've both been able to sleep a bit. Is it already "distracting-Sherlock-time"? It's dry outside here, so perhaps another long walk in the park? It won't really work with my niece, but perhaps it's worth a try?

L - weather forecast from the Westcountry: it's raining again. We're off to Bristol this afternoon to the pantomime.

Hope the day goes well for all of you and that Sherlock hasn't yet gone stratospheric. (The same for anyone else with under tens!)

pandabob said...

I'm doing Christmas dinner today for my family before my nice quiet kiddy day tomorrow and I probably won't be around later so good luck with your mum Greg, whatever happens remember that you have done all you can and you very much deserve to have a great Christmas with those who love you and want you to share it with them :-)

John, mycroft good luck with Sherlock ;-) and don't get too excited yourselves ;-)

Have a lovely Christmas eve everyone even if you don't celebrate Christmas :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

SH - Hope the rain stops sometime.

Sherlock has already called me twice to ask me if I'm on the way home...

REReader said...

Have a good day taking care of all the finishing bits of preparation (if there are any!), John, Mycroft, and Sherlock. :) Travel safe and at least relatively dry, L--I hope your visit goes well. Will you stop at Nicky's before heading back, or us your schedule too tight?

(ETA: My captcha was rkskeve--is rkskeve some newfangled abbreviation for Chrstmas? :))

Small Hobbit said...

L - rain has stopped and it is sunny!

If anyone remembers us losing some keys very many months ago - we've found them. Hidden between two loaf tins. So a burglar wouldn't find them.

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad to know neither of you are burglars then.

I hope the weather holds, the roads still seem pretty grim.

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger, coming back to the flat, dropping off paperwork, kissing you, heading off to Bristol.

See you soon.

REReader said...

You left out being pounced on by Sherlock. :) Have a safe (and dry) trip and a good visit!

What have the rest of you been up to, Sherlock, Mycroft, John? Having fun, I hope!

Sherlock said...

Yes we had fun and Mrs Hudson showed me how to make a pompom and Mycroft and John made some biscuits and we've got octopus. But Lestrade shouldn't go to Bristol because I want him to stay here and his Mum was mean last time he went.

John H. D. Watson said...

She's still his mum though, and it's pretty terrible for her to be in hospital for Christmas. Let's just hope the visit goes well for both of them, all right?

Sherlock said...

Can I make him antlers for his bike helmet?

REReader said...

Helmet antlers might get ruined in the rain, though, Sherlock, or blow off and get squished by a car. But it was a festive thought!

I'm glad you're all having a good day--I remember learning how to make yarn pompoms, it is fun! And of course, so are biscuits. Are they Christmas biscuits with green and red icing, or some other kind?

Anonymous said...

Sherlock, when my mom is feeling all right I just call her on holidays, but when she's sick I try to visit her instead, because it is boring being sick and no fun, so she likes having a distraction even if she's cranky about it. And now you know that if you were sick you know Lestrade would visit you, too. So that's good.

But I'm not sure antlers are allowed on bike helmets.

Will you take a nap today so you can stay up late, or are you going to try to just stay up forever until Lestrade gets home?

(L, I hope the drive is not too bad, and not too wet.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock - you're welcome to make them, just be aware there's a good chance he won't be able to wear them when he's actually riding. You could, of course, just make a headband with antlers that he could wear any time...

Anonymous said...

Antlers are good. Glittery antlers are better.

Sherlock said...

Yes glittery antlers! Mrs Hudson says that if John cuts me out cardboard antler shapes I can wrap her brown wool all around them and them put on glitter too! I think he'll like them.

REReader said...

How could he not?!

John H. D. Watson said...

I will be more than happy to cut out cardboard antlers for you.

Greg Lestrade said...

Wow, Sherlock. Can you make John some too, to match mine - or maybe like mine, but in a different colour glitter? That would make me really really happy.

John H. D. Watson said...

Devious...

How's it going?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, okay. Sam's here too.

Two awkward boys.

She told me I looked tired and scruffy. I told her it didn't look like she'd made much of an effort herself (I didn't.)

Her bloke hasn't been to see her. At all. So I think she's at least put me a step ahead of him.

John H. D. Watson said...

Then I hope he's not her bloke anymore. You and Sam getting along all right?

Sherlock is making me blue glittery antlers now.

Greg Lestrade said...

I've not asked directly. but I doubt he is.

Sam and I are...okay, yeah. Sort of like meeting someone from school. He's okay, though. Asked after you and the boys - said he was surprised I was here.

What colour are my antlers?

John H. D. Watson said...

That's nice of him. Tell him Merry Christmas for me?

Hm...are you sure you want to know? You don't want it to be a beautiful Christmas surprise?

REReader said...

I'm glad your visit with your mother is going reasonably well, L. And you have sparkly antlers to look forward to when you get home!

How did the octopus come out, John?

Greg Lestrade said...

I did, Danger. He said thanks.

And go on, surprise me with antlers, I don't mind. Leaving soon, should be back by...well, before 11. Maybe just after ten.

John H. D. Watson said...

RR - the octopus wasn't bad, actually. Sherlock had more fun with it before it was cooked than after though.

L - these antlers will be extremely surprising, I assure you. Good luck with the ride home. Love you.

REReader said...

I can see how raw octopus would be more fun--or at least more interesting--than cooked octopus, however tasty... :) Glad it came out well!

Kestrel337 said...

Octopus pasta sauce and glittery antlers sound like good holiday memories.

Glad the visit went well. Happy Holidays, one and all!

Greg Lestrade said...

well...yeah, as well as could be expected. At least she seemed to appreciate the effort.

Just stopped for petrol. be about 45 mins, Danger. Sherlock, you better be being good.

Sherlock said...

I am! I helped with cleaning up and everything!

REReader said...

Excellent, Sherlock!

I'm glad the visit went well. We had some excitement here at the library, but have now attached the wandering five year old to the frantic parent, so they'll have a happy holiday after all.

I hope you'll do the same!

I'm glad your visit went ok Greg, I hope that has helped raise the Christmas spirit a little :-)

Sherlock, I hope you've had a great day and that your presents hold all you hope they do in the morning, Same to you Mycroft :-)

Small Hobbit said...

I'm also glad your visit went as well as could be expected, L.

Looking forward to hearing about your antlers.

Greg Lestrade said...

My antlers are really, very, very good. Purple and silver.

Sherlock has FINALLY gone to bed.

REReader said...

That sounds supremely festive! And are you going to wear them on your helmet? Or just around the flat?

John H. D. Watson said...

We are both wearing them. Mycroft's trying to take a picture, but we've eluded him so far.

REReader said...

Aha! A new holiday tradition!

I hope he succeeds before the glitter comes loose!

Anon Without A Name said...

We definitely need pictures.

Perhaps you could find something else festive to put on your helmet, Lestrade?

I'm glad your visit went reasonably well - I'm especially glad you got to chat with Sam, albeit a little awkwardly, without Danny there.

Hope everyone has a lovely day tomorrow :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't think they'd survive my helmet. Indoor use only.

Nameless - yeah, Sam's nice. It was good to have a chat.

I hope you all have a great day too. I'm sure you'll get the odd update from this madhouse.

Anonymous said...

If we don't hear from you till Boxing day we'll know it's because Sherlock is keeping you too busy to post.

Merry Christmas, all!

Greg Lestrade said...

John and I are currently playing Santa - or he is, I've got my antlers on. Guess I'm a reindeer. Except they're all girls...

Anon Without A Name said...

John and I are currently playing Santa... I've got my antlers on

0_o I can only assume that Mycroft has retired to bed and the two of you are now alone for... shenanigans? Enjoy, you deserve it :-)

(And it's possible that I was referring to a different helmet, L. Seems like you two don't need any more help getting festive with your appendages ;-D )

Small Hobbit said...

Happy Christmas to you all and to all your readers :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless - I assure you, I just meant we were filling stockings. If that helps! (I can confirm neither of us came down the chimney...)

Mycroft has now gone to bed, and we're going. And God knows what time Sherlock will be up. He knows he can choose ONE present form Santa to bring and open on our bed, then has to wait for all the rest until after all the cooking prep for dinner is done, and both Mrs Hs are here.

John H. D. Watson said...

Did not see this earlier. Reindeer are all girls? What?

Greg Lestrade said...

thought with your interest in birds you'd know that ;)

Um..yeah, all girls. I don't know what else to say? I mean, obviously not ALL reindeer are girls, but all the ones that pull the sleigh are, I think.

John H. D. Watson said...

I had no idea.

Greg Lestrade said...

Does it give you a whole new perspective on life?

John H. D. Watson said...

I want to hear your evidence for this. But maybe in the morning.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm just finishing a little post, then I'm putting myself in your stocking...

I think I actually know that one. It has to do with antlers, doesn't it?

rsf

John H. D. Watson said...

Maybe? I'm not up on reindeer anatomy. I've asked him in his post though.

REReader said...

Rsf, Snopes.com says that thing about the antlers counts as a legend:

Besides, as the web site of Alaska's Department of Fish and Game notes, Santa's reindeer are an uncommon subspecies (saintnicolas magicalus) that exhibit characteristics atypical of other subspecies of reindeer. (Read more at http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/santa/reindeer.asp#cPAbDPLIH3EVsWoW.99 )
