going fast, slowly

Sherlock's mum picked him up from school today and took him to get cake. I gather she was regaled with every last detail regarding the Christmas show, including the colour of lights he wants on his halo. He also got her to sign a contract saying she'd be there. It covers a number of contingencies, including alien invasion, zombie apocalypse, and nuclear war. In all cases, she is expected to attend the show, even if some of Sherlock's classmates attempt to eat her brain.

With all this time on my hands, I helped Mrs Hudson bake:

Went for a run. Thought about some things, which didn't turn out as badly for me as it usually does. Cleaned the kitchen, waded around in Sherlock's room to make sure  there was nothing growing in there that shouldn't be. And had the following exchange of texts with Anthea:

Me: are you coming to christmas dinner?
A: what's in it for me
Me: the opportunity to wash a lot of dishes after
A: you mean make my minions wash a lot of dishes
Me: thought you said they weren't your minions
A: reconsidering. may need to start life of supervillany, in which case minions necessary

I think Harrow may be getting to her.

And lastly, here is a cheetah running very fast...very slowly.

That cheetah is amazing.

And so is that baking! Why haven't I eaten any of that yet??

John H. D. Watson said...

I didn't get any either! All I did was cut them out and stick on the little white balls. She said they're for her book club and she might make us some another day if we were good.

Greg Lestrade said...

Were you good? Didn't disgrace us?

I shouldn't have anything until I've run more. Don't think yesterday counts.

John H. D. Watson said...

Of course I was good! They smelled delicious.

Maybe we can go on Friday after we drop off Sherlock.

Greg Lestrade said...

...only if you don't tell him that I'm not at home playing my fingers to the bone.

John H. D. Watson said...

Your secret's safe with me. And the entire internet.

pandabob said...

that's some impressive baking John :-)

I'm glad you two are having a relaxing night

John H. D. Watson said...

Mrs Hudson's baking is always impressive...even when I'm not allowed to eat it. :)

REReader said...

It's lovely that Sherlock is so eager to have his mother at his show! (And I do hope no contingencies he hasn't foreseen arise to prevent it.)

I think enough time at a boys school would get to anyone... :)

Have a good night, gentlemen!

I'm glad the thinking is working out better for you now, John - is that Dr E's influence, or just that you're in a better headspace these days?

(That sounded all kinds of wrong, but I tried half a dozen different ways to phrase that better, and none of them worked; so hopefully you get my drift)

You didn't even get any broken biscuits for a taste test? That's a shame. Are they chocolate or something else? Hard to tell without the aroma.

I'm glad Sherlock had a nice time with his mum, and I'll bet he worked very hard on the contract beforehand. Has he shown her his kung fu moves yet?

Anthea sounds like she either needs a break from teenage boys or is enjoying herself far too much. Minions indeed! I trust she doesn't mean Mycroft!

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't think Mrs H would break any. Wouldn't put it past John though, just to get a taste ;)

And I don't think even Anthea could make Mycroft into a minion.

John H. D. Watson said...

Nameless - sounds fine to me, don't worry. I'm not sure what it is really. Maybe partly Dr E, but maybe also just...time.

rsf - they are indeed chocolate. And Mrs H doesn't allow broken biscuits.

And Anthea's minions are the security team downstairs. Technically they're Mrs Holmes' minions, but they answer to Anthea too. They were kind enough to do the washing up last year.

Greg Lestrade said...

Jeez, look at the time. John was distracting me with his buns.

Biscuits...I meant biscuits....

And washing up last year means they get in on a few pheasants this year...unless I don't do pheasant. We'll put it to a vote at some point. (the bird, not whether they get any.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Pretty sure you were distracting me just then... Why'd you stop?

Greg Lestrade said...

because look at the time! I need my beauty sleep.

John H. D. Watson said...

Mm. We should go to bed then.

Ah, it was the singular that had me wondering. Minion as opposed to minions. The minions being a team and not a singularity. And yes, Mycroft does strike me as one who will have minions rather than as one who is being minioned but there is that apprenticeship to be gotten through...

I don't think I've ever had pheasant. Do people still have goose for Christmas at all?

REReader said...

We often have pizza for Chanukah--or bagels--to go with the latkes and sufganiyot (potato pancakes and jelly donuts). Does that count? :)

Greg Lestrade said...

People have all sorts, RSF. Turkey is still unfathomably popular.

Sherlock had a meltdown this morning because he wants to come to fetch Mycroft too... I felt bad leaving John to wake up to that.

pandabob said...

I hope John managed to help Sherlock come up with a good treat for you all after Mycroft's picked him up from school :-)

good luck with your day.

REReader said...

It's not all that surprising, really (about Sherlock) as his excitement level's been dialed up to eleven for a while now--and at home is better than not at home. But so tiring for all if you. I hope the rest of the day is considerably calmer on all fronts.

(I think people like turkey because it's big enough for a crowd, and it looks so good in photos. It can't be because of the taste!)

Greg Lestrade said...

Not surprising at all, a combination of factors equaling excitement and anger.

I just gave him a bear hug this morning as he became a little ball of flailing rage and waited for him to burn out.

Gems included 'Mycroft's mine not yours!' And 'You're not allowed to have any fun EVER I'm going to tell Mummy!'.

Let's hope school brings out the angelic side again.

REReader said...

He's truly fortunate to be so well understood.

(You're not having any fun, are you? ;))

(My captcha had "wise" right in the middle--are you sure it's random?)

Anonymous said...

I actually like turkey, but I can see where people who've only ever had the white meat might not. Always wanted to try goose, but I've never seen it to buy in a one-person quantity.

A big bear hug is a great counter to a meltdown - Sherlock's a lucky kid to have you.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm very rarely having fun when at work, don't worry, Mrs H won't have to step in.

REReader said...

:D

(This time my captcha was "likedt"--how Facebook of it!)

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger, was going to play at the pub tonight.

If Sherlock's been good, and if he deserves a special treat, you and he could come along and we could get pizza on the way home.

But only if he deserves it.

Sherlock said...

I have been good!

John H. D. Watson said...

Heh. Yeah, he has. When should we met you?

REReader said...

I glad your day went well, Sherlock.

Have a fun evening, guys. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I should get there...about half past? Mine's a Guinness :)

Anonymous said...

That sounds like fun. Do pubs over there make Shirley Temples for kids to drink?

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

I can't imagine most pubs would know a Shirley Temple if it bit them on the arse, to be honest.

Kids tend to get...coke, or juice.

pandabob said...

Sherlock can we rely on you for a completely unbiased review when you get home? Lestrade always claims John's biased when he says he played well but you'll tell us the truth won't you?

Have a great time together :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

L - do we get to applaud this time or is there still a ban on all movement and breathing? ;)

Sherlock said...

Lestrade PROMISED me ages ago if we went to the pub again I could have pork scratchings and I want them so I have to be able to move enough to eat them.

Anonymous said...

I really only ever liked them for the cherry on the paper umbrella, anyway, L.

Will you playing Christmas music or practicing music for the wedding?

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

I said you could try some, yeah. You might not like them much.

John....no appluading. But you can lift your drinks, breathe and you can restrain Sherlock, if needed.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'll do my best... no promises on successfully restraining Sherlock.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well just don't let him get barred from a pub before he's legally allowed in to most of them!!

John H. D. Watson said...

I think I can promise that much! Looking forward to seeing you. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

and me you.

leaving any minute. Sal is threatening to follow me.

John H. D. Watson said...

You could always bring her along...

Sally said...

Yes, he could, couldn't he?

John H. D. Watson said...

it might help if you promise not to record him on your phone and show it to everyone at work.

Sally said...

He left before I could, sadly. Have a good time. Try to persuade him he should play at our Christmas do.

Sherlock said...

Sally are you going to come to my Christmas show please?

Sally said...

Well it's very kind of you to invite me, Sherlock.

You tell the boss when it is and I'll see if I'm free. I'd love to, but if the boss is off I might have to work. Also, are you sure you're allowed to invite a lot of people?

Have John and the boss helped make your halo yet?

My sister's eldest is being a donkey, I think...an animal of some sort, anyway.

Sherlock said...

I'm an angel! I think I should get to invite as many people as I want but John says I still have to ask Mrs N and I will make Lestrade tell you when it is and the halo isn't done yet but it is started. It's going to be REALLY BRIGHT.

Anonymous said...

I think you should be able to invite people too, Sherlock, but I expect there's only a certain number of chairs that will fit in the room for an audience. What kind of lights are you using for your halo? And what on earth are pork scratchings?

I hope you're all having fun.

rsf

Sherlock said...

They are a fried part of the pig, I think the skin. I'm not sure if I like them or not but I'm eating more.

Greg Lestrade said...

They are indeed, pork fat and skin. And hairs. But mainly very salty, very hard, very crunchy.

And John managed to not get either of them banned.

Although I'm sure Sherlock is too full of scratchings to want pizza now...

Sherlock said...

I'M NOT, I STILL WANT PIZZA, LOTS OF IT.

Greg Lestrade said...

...he also wants garlic bread, mozzarella sticks and ice cream, just in case you were wondering....

REReader said...

Pizza may make everyone feel happy, but you still need to fill in the gaps. :)
Have fun!

John H. D. Watson said...

And it's not even ice cream season...

Greg Lestrade said...

Mmm. I might be persuaded...

John H. D. Watson said...

We are all easily persuaded by ice cream.

Greg Lestrade said...

And I have to be persuaded to let you two go and ride home while you jump in a cab or the tube.

Sherlock said...

Can I sit on your bike again first pleaseeeeee? I am definitely bigger than last time.

Anonymous said...

I think pork scratchings get called pork cracklin's here. I'm not sure. I've never dared eat any.

Ice cream sounds like a good followup, though. Did you have a good time, Sherlock? Are you more sanguine about Lestrade's performance in the Christmas concert now?

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

come on then, Shortstuff. (And you, Sherlock ;) )

And whoever asked - one of Sherlock's songs got played tonight. And the wedding ones.

John H. D. Watson said...

come on then, Shortstuff

See if I buy you ice cream again any time soon. :P

Greg Lestrade said...

Hah, it's cake season!

See you at home, slow-coaches....

Thanks for the cheetah. Hubster's favorite animal in the whole entire animal world. He watched the video and said "Cheetahs are seriously awesome".
