they cannot look out far, they cannot look in deep

We left this morning to go and visit Nicky and her family and Lestrade's mum. Left the boys at Nicky's house, went to the hospital...had a very quiet visit. Clearly quieter than L expected. Quieter than I expected, to be honest. She barely said a word.

Nice lunch with everyone afterward, and then the drive home. Sherlock entertained everyone for a while with various videos he found on youtube and then fell asleep. Mycroft told us a bit about his and Carla's plans for next weekend. He said we can fit it all in if everyone keeps to the schedule. L asked him what he thought the chances of that were. He said about 17%. I'm pretty sure there'll be ice skating though, at least.

We played Cluedo this evening, which ended as well as you might expect, with the board overturned and pieces all over the room. Sherlock insisted his character didn't do it and that we had no evidence...

And then Lestrade casually mentioned that next Sunday is...well, a sort of anniversary for us. I'm really bad at remembering dates. Even when the event in question was extremely memorable. I love him every day, sometimes so much it's almost frightening to me. Certainly more than I ever thought I was capable of. I hope that makes up for it. We've got a date for next Sunday if Mrs Hudson can look after Sherlock. Which, given her willingness to aid and abet on previous dates, seems extremely likely. I'll ask her in the morning, which is coming all too soon.

The dates don't matter nearly as much as being with you every day. They're just good excuses :)

I'm glad you had a good time with Nicky et al, even if the hospital visit to L's Mum wasn't as positive as you might have hoped.

That hotel that L was posting pics of last night looks fabulous.

Remembering dates is good, but it's not what's important in the grand scheme of things. Being there for each other, loving each other, being a positive force in each other's lives, that's the important stuff - seems to me you've got that down pat :-)

Enjoy your day, all.

Greg Lestrade said...

I honestly wouldn't care if we missed dates, or didn't celebrate them. But I can't pass up an excuse to get away and enjoy ourselves for a night. And the boys are so understanding, it's very good of them.

pandabob said...

private adult time is very important and when you have people to look after the boys you have to take advantage ;-)

Mycroft I hope you're keeping John busy with whatever plans you have for this week :-)

have a good day at work Greg and a good day practicing for your Christmas show Sherlock :-)

Remembering special days is lovely. Finding ordinary days special is lovely, too. Between the two of you, L and John, you've got it covered. :)

I hope all four of you are having a good day! :)

Spoke to Nicky, Danger, who spoke to Mum earlier. She didn't like me bringing you with me. Despite not saying anything about that before. So...Suppose I'm back to visiting on my own next time.

John H. D. Watson said...

All right. Sorry.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's not your fault, Numbnut!

She said she felt like I brought you just to be another doctor so I could get on her back about more things. I don't know where she gets her ideas from.

John H. D. Watson said...

Probably what she'd do in your place.

John H. D. Watson said...

God. Sorry, that was really uncalled for.

I can always come along and just not go to the hospital if you like.

pandabob said...

Saying what you think is never uncalled for John.

She's a bloody funny woman Greg but you know what, she isn't actually in charge of you and who you take with you and where.

Sorry she's being a pain again for you.

REReader said...

(That wasn't really uncalled for, John--that's how lots of people think, after all, they assume others will act as they would. So that might be it. Or maybe she's feeling guilty...which wouldn't necessarily be such a bad thing.)

I hope you and Mycroft had a good day together!

And I hope you had a good day preparing for the Christmas show, Sherlock--are you deep in rehearsals this week?

Greg Lestrade said...

John, seriously, dont worry.

I'm stuck between feeling like I should cut her slack for what she's going through and just wanting to tell her to grow up and stop making other people.

Greg Lestrade said...

Blaming other people, not making them... was halfway to saying making it other people's fault. Lost all ability to form coherent sentences.

REReader said...

I hope that last doesn't mean you're having a bad day at work, L.

John H. D. Watson said...

Parents will do that to you sometimes.

How's your day going?

Anonymous said...

John, remembering the dates on the calendar always seems like gravy to me, as long as you remember why the people they're about are important every day. And you certainly do!

As for the visit to your mum, L,maybe next time you and Nicky can go together, while John stays with the boys and Carla.

And while it's frustrating that she didn't say anything, maybe it's a positive sign that she was trying not to start a fight with you and John? I don't know. If she got the "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything" routine, then maybe, but it might be the aphasia too, making it harder for her to find the words she wants.

Anyway, I hope you all have a good week with Mycroft home. What day is Sherlock's performance.

Greg Lestrade said...

It wasn't just that she didn't say anything, it was that she didn't even acknowledge what we said. And wouldn't eat her lunch. I don't know, I don't want to try and guess what goes on in her head about us.

John, I got an appointment with an Osteopath. Sal recommended one her sister used to see. He had an appointment free so I'm going. Means I haven't got time to get nervous, I guess. It's in about half an hour.

pandabob said...

Good on you getting the problem seen to Greg I really hope its the answer :-)

Anonymous said...

Not guessing is hard. But I know what you mean. Good luck with the doctor appointment. Hope it helps.

rsf

REReader said...

Here's hoping the ostoepath appointment goes well!

John H. D. Watson said...

Good, I hope it helps. Coming straight home after?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, on the way. Sorry, stopped to help at an rta.

He was nice. I smell of whatever oil stuff he uses.

REReader said...

rta?

Nice is good!

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm glad he was nice. Did he think he could help? Or has he helped already?

RR - RTA = road traffic accident

Greg Lestrade said...

He made my neck crunch very loudly. I hope it will help.

And yeah, nasty crash on a very busy road.

REReader said...

Thanks for the translation, SH and L. (Sorry you had a nasty to deal with, L.)

Anonymous said...

John, if Sherlock has the patience for jigsaw puzzles, then he might like the murder mystery puzzles done by BePuzzled. Like this one which has a coffee theme. The picture on the box is not the picture of the puzzle. You need to assemble the jigsaw to find all the clues.

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - I wasn't really 'dealing', just lending a hand with traffic and people.

I will never understand why people want to film/photograph someone dead or dying in the road.

I feel weird now.

John H. D. Watson said...

rsf - that does look pretty good. I honestly don't know if he'd have the patience or not but I think it's got a better chance than Cluedo.

L - yeah, I've never understood that impulse either.

REReader said...

Rubbernecking is a very upretty behavior.

Weird because of the accident, or because of the neck crunching?

Greg Lestrade said...

I assume the neck crunching.

REReader said...

...Should we worry? (Am I fussing too much? I'm trying not to fuss. It's just that I really know nothing about osteopathy.)

Anon Without A Name said...

I used to get my neck crunched by a chiropractor. Felt a bit weird afterwards - not surprising really, given what they do. Sort of felt a bit like my head had been disconnected and then reconnected again. Mind you, it helped with the headaches, and the neck pain...

Greg Lestrade said...

no, no need to worry, they warn you might feel a bit spaced out.

I feel like...like my head's packed in cotton wool. And warm.

John H. D. Watson said...

Warm is good.

piplover said...

RR - usually after I get crunched I feel better. Odd, but better. It's almost like a lack of pain you weren't aware of. It can sometimes take the body a bit to realize it's not out of whack anymore. Besides, L has John there if he needs anything so I don't think you have to worry.

pandabob said...

that sounds like a nice kind of weird, here's hoping it does the trick for you at least a little bit :-)

What crazy plan do you have for the evening? or is sensibly relaxation on the cards?

Anonymous said...

Well, scattering the pieces of a jigsaw mystery just means you're never going to solve the puzzle, so that might be a deterrent.

I've never tried chiropracty/osteopathy for my migraines, so I'll be interested to find out if it works for you, L.

I don't know why people take pictures of accidents. Proof they were there? Something to hawk to the local television news? Makes no sense to me, either. But I'm glad there are people like you who will stop to help and not take pictures.

rsf

REReader said...

rsf, that puzzle/mystery does look interesting! I like jigsaws, so I may give it a go. :)

Thanks, L. And here's hoping it helps with the migraines! Do you go back for more?

Enjoy the rest of your evening, gentlemen (all four of you)!

Greg Lestrade said...

RSF - it has in the past. He clicked out the neck joints, then does some really gentle work on my skull. He said he 'manipulated' a bit at the back of my head... who knows, I'll find out over the next few weeks!

RR - back toward the end of January, or before if I want, or later if I feel fine.

AnonyBob - I'm meant to 'take it easy'.

pandabob said...

well that should be easy for someone as good at sitting around doing nothing except relaxing as you are ;-) good luck with it.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm practicing for the play. Sherlock wants to record me to use in rehearsals or something.

REReader said...

That sounds like a nicely low-pressure approach, L.

And a recording to practice with is an excellent idea, really. :)

Sherlock said...

He keeps playing it differently and singing differently and he'll probably do it different AGAIN in the play.

pandabob said...

If you want the music to always be the same Sherlock I'm afraid you may have chosen the wrong way to go about it. A CD will always be the same but a live performance is supposed to be different that's the point of it isn't it?

REReader said...

As Anony says, that is a characteristic of live music, Sherlock. Why don't you pick one way he sings it that would be good to dance to, and ask him if he could please try to stay close to that recording, and when you practice keep in mind it will likely bit a bit different.

Sherlock said...

He's being silly and not even singing the right words now he's singing 'he ain't short, he's my boyfriend'.

REReader said...

Well, you can put it down to keeping the volunteer happy--that way he won't get bored playing the songs before the show!

When is the show, Sherlock? It must be pretty soon.

Small Hobbit said...

And how much eye-rolling is going on?

Greg Lestrade said...

John's putting Sherlock to bed... I've been left to my own devices on the sofa making up new lyrics. Mycroft is helping ;)

pandabob said...

I said Mycroft was a bad influence ;-)

Poor John having to put up with you and your jokes!

John H. D. Watson said...

One Sherlock successfully installed in bed...back to the eye-rolling. I'm being serenaded. A duet for two guitars and short jokes.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, he is a poor soul.

Still, he charmed Mrs H into taking over Nannying next Sunday, so I can be a bad influence in a nice hotel room. (let's hope he can reach the bed..)

John H. D. Watson said...

Mrs H was, as always, almost worryingly enthusiastic and told me we shouldn't worry about getting home late, she could pick Sherlock up as well if need be.

Greg Lestrade said...

I bet Sherlock would have something to say about that!

I plan to be worryingly enthusiastic though ;) we may not be able to move to fetch the Boy Wonder.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sounds promising...

Greg Lestrade said...

we have many things to discover about that bed.

Although seeing that thing on Claridges... £6,900 per night for that room? ... makes me feel like we're going to a cheap motel ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Pfft. Claridges doesn't have beds hanging from the ceiling.

Greg Lestrade said...

...no, but if you said you wanted one, then provided you're some sort of minor royalty (actual or pop-related) then they'd get one...

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't think that could be as fun as finding one on your own.

Greg Lestrade said...

well I'm going to find our bed. Although I feel oddly awake.

John H. D. Watson said...

Be with you in just a minute.

I could bring my laptop if you want to watch a zombie film made and acted by physics students at CERN and shot partially inside the large hadron collider...

Anonymous said...

Zombies at CERN? Link please?

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

Right.... why not? Better than staring at the ceiling. Zombies are known for their soporific qualities, right?

John H. D. Watson said...

Zombies at CERN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=n-NwLUPZWZc

Unless the acting improves from the little I've seen, these zombies may indeed be soporific.

Anonymous said...

Thank you. And soporific actually doesn't sound that bad right now...

rsf

REReader said...

I don't care who made it, I can't bring myself to watch 75 minutes of a zombie movie!

(Probably. :D)

Anonymous said...

I couldn't watch very much of it either. Wish it had put me to sleep, though!
