it's a...thing

What is it? Strange underwater creature, artificial eyeball? You can guess if you want to and I'll put an explanatory link up tomorrow - someone remind me if I don't.

We were planning to pick up Carla and Paul after Longleat yesterday for ease of taking them to the off road place today, which didn't happen, because Paul had a thing (not sure what) that he had to do today. He and Carla came on the train today, and we will do the off road place tomorrow.

Today was a restful day of planting things in the allotment and getting dirty and cleaning up and then going to meet Paul and Carla's train...after which Carla and Paul and Mycroft and Sherlock were set loose upon London together. On their own. And by 'on their own' I mean with security trailing them, thank goodness.

And I spent part of the afternoon thinking about parents who don't have a security team following their children around (most of them) and wish they did (again, I'm going to guess most of them). It's an odd thing, and I know Mycroft's tired of it already, even if he's far more accepting of it than most boys his age would be. Me, for example. I had no sense whatsoever at fourteen and would've escaped every chance I got. And Sherlock, for now, doesn't care, because he wouldn't care if the entire city of London paraded after him everywhere he went as long as they didn't get in his way and perhaps bought him ice cream every now and then, which the security team has been known to do. But we can't expect that to last forever.

I don't think I had a point there; it's just something I think about every now and then, because it's a strange situation and one I often feel grateful for, but I'm aware that possibly I shouldn't feel grateful for it? Because they need to ordinary kids and learn to navigate the world on their own, but then again...I worry. I can't help it.

Well. That was...a lot of words I didn't expect to write today. Anyhow, they're fine, and they're almost back now, and we're going to be making pizza. We'll have to invade Mrs Hudson's flat to bake it because our oven is still broken, so I'd better go and warn her.

It looks like something splashing into liquid... but I've actually got half an idea what it is, and I'm not going to say in case I ruin it for everyone.

I keep thinking about what our lives would be like if we'd met and the boys weren't with us. And, even though sometimes I'd love more time with you, just the two of us...I can't even imagine not having them around. They just...make life so much better. More complete. And for every bit of worrying I do about them, it's cancelled out by every moment of being proud of them, spending time with them, watching them grow up and change and all the love and laughter they bring with them.

And yeah, I can't imagine having a security presence at their age. I would have fought it. Loudly and violently. And completely disgraced myself.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, I suppose it might be different if we'd grown uplike that but still.

And yes. Definitely better with them. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah...like you say, let's just hope Sherlock keeps treating them as his entourage for a long time, and doesn't decide to rebel.

Well, not rebel beyond wanting anchovies and pineapple and peanut butter on his pizza, as he's just announced.

And the worrying doesn't stop. Daughter fell off a 17h3 horse on Wednesday, broke her hat, but said she was fine but bruised. Then when she didn't reply to a text and didn't answer when we later phoned her yesterday evening we started to panic. We were very relieved when she did phone in response to a voicemail - having of course being busy doing things and totally unaware of our concern.

Anchovies AND peanut butter? That's... uhm... a waste of good peanut butter.

I'm not sure what your picture is John, but like Lestrade I think it's something falling into a liquid, specifically milk. Either that or a capture of the moment a projectile goes through some kind of barrier.

I will admit I would worry more about the boys going out without the security team. I hope they are much appreciated by their charges -- as an occasional source of ice cream, if nothing else -- despite the frustrations.

SH, I'm glad your daughter is okay. Was her hat like a safety helmet?

how was the pizza and are they all exhausted from their trip or wide awake with lots to tell you?

Greg Lestrade said...

Pizza was...chaotic! And I had to eat half of Sherlocks and give up mine...well, you know, didn't have to, but it's what grown ups do, right?

I think, exhausted, but pretending not to be? Sherlock is adamant he should be allowed to sleep in his hammock. Or that everyone should sleep in the living room. Or various other plans.

John H. D. Watson said...

Or various other plans.

Few of which involve actually sleeping.

pandabob said...

Aahh how lovely of you to give up your pizza :-)

I seem to remember that the rule of sleepovers is that only the weak sleep ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

His was...interesting. Especially when he also picked the olives off mine and added them to the anchovy/pineapple/peanut butter combo...

And yes, there seem to be a lot of young people still awake and out of bed, who seem to think they'll be going off-roading tomorrow...

pandabob said...

but you can't drive whilst tired so that's not going to work is it??

seriously though, good luck with it. I fear the day mine make it to sleepover age!

Nicky said...

Paul! Language young man. What have I told you? Orio and John won't have you over to stay again if that's how you behave.

Good luck to both of you, looking after those four. I hope mine are behaving, apart from the obvious. And have a brilliant time tomorrow.

Greg Lestrade said...

Cheers Nicky. I had words with him earlier.

The two youngest have now been detained and imprisoned. The two elder ones have currently been released...but are advised they're on a curfew, and if they break it, they'll also be put away.

So there's just one delicious Doc that I may need to send down ;)

The sooner the better, I think...

Greg Lestrade said...

After all that lazing about in bed you did this afternoon? I don't know...

Still, suppose we need all our energy for a vigorous ride tomorrow.

John H. D. Watson said...

Lazing! I'll show you lazing...

Just tell me we're not leaving at 7am again. Please?

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh, feel free to give me a encore of lazing, yes. I enjoyed it very much the first time around.

No, not 7. More like 9. It'll be fantastic. I intend to do more jumps.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'll take pictures. From a safe distance.

Greg Lestrade said...

I have every intention of being careful.

Sherlock hasn't forgotten that I've promised to get a pink cast if I ever need one... it's good incentive not to break anything.

Feel like I'm 17 again on a bike like those :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, in reality I'll probably try some too. Thankfully, I have made no such promise!

Greg Lestrade said...

We'd get you all doolally on painkillers and make sure you got a really pretty cast, don't worry.

Not, I hasten to add, that you should ever need one.

Come on, we'll go and check the big kids are at least heading to bed, on the way to our own.

John H. D. Watson said...

I want a pirate themed one.

Mmkay.

Greg Lestrade said...

pirate themed cast? Think that means they cut your leg off and replace it with a wooden one. Or chop off your arm and give you a hook.

I'd prefer you whole.

I'm...unsure exactly who Mycroft's room can fit both of them and the dogs in it. Yet...somehow...

John H. D. Watson said...

The dogs simultaneously fit into any available space and expand to fill all available space.

Greg Lestrade said...

True.

I've got a lovely space you could expand and fill ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Happy to oblige.

I'm going to guess that it's...something spinning, in liquid. Or, as others have guessed, drip or projectile at the moment of impact. Drippy projectile?

Shutting up now.

Looks like a drop of milk into coffee. Hope you all have a good day tomorrow, and glad today was good for everyone!

Small Hobbit said...

Have a great time all of you and try to leave some mud for other people to play in ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks! It's a beautiful day, but the trails are wonderfully muddy :)

Fairly sure the adults are more excited than the kids...

Anon Without A Name said...

I can't work out if the Thing loks more like a flower or flames, trapped in a soap bubble - which means it's almost certainly nothing to do with flowers, flames or soap bubbles.

Hope you're all having a fun time getting muddy :-)

REReader said...

Okay, John--what is that a picture of? I want to say that it's some sort of microorganism, which probably means it's nothing of the sort. :)

I hope you all had the best time today!

Small Hobbit said...

Echoing RR's request, because I have no idea what it is.

And you did say you'd tell us, so you have to ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I was going to guess something ballistics-related, which is why I didn't say anything more :) But I wasn't quite sure what it was hitting.

REReader said...

Whoa.

That's pretty amazing.

Small Hobbit said...

Wow, I would never have got that.

John H. D. Watson said...

I think a few people suggested some sort of impact, so congratulate yourselves. When I saw the pictures I just had no idea. I thought maybe some sort of space...something. They are beautiful though.

Greg Lestrade said...

I only had an idea because I've seen things a little like that in the ballistics lab when I've visited for training and stuff.
