abandoned

Royal Marines out of Afghanistan. I'm pretty happy about that. I know a couple of those guys in 40 Commando and I've patched up more than a couple. Glad to know they're coming home safe.

In totally unrelated news, the comment in my last post from Kate L about abandoned places reminded me I'd come across this:

It's an abandoned hotel in Japan. There are a lot more pictures at the site. Very interesting. He has a link at the top to more places like this that he's documented.

L and Sherlock are making chocolate and raspberry cupcakes. L has told me I'm not to eat all of them this time, which is really not at all limiting. Five isn't all of them. Ten isn't even all of them. I'm only saying. They smell really good.

Mycroft took Sherlock to the museum today, which is the second outing they've been on alone together without any major property damage, fire, or other catastrophes. I'm very proud - I mean, really, I actually am. They don't always get along perfectly, but I'm so happy they can go out and have a good time together, especially as both of them start growing up.

I almost literally cannot believe they'll be eight and fifteen in few months. Terrifying.

Terrible Nanny, teaching be-hammocked children too many excuses!

Want to share an orange? Sherlock has rejected this one, after half peeling it, because he didn't like how its skin felt.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, all right. Not as tasty as alllll the cupcakes, but certainly better for me, thanks. I wonder what its skin felt like...

Also...I sort of hesitate to ask and I don't know if you want to talk about it at all, let alone on here, but...why did you think you were being an arsehole when Murray was here?

Greg Lestrade said...

the sort of...holes in it were too deep he said. I replaced it with a smoother orange, which he's eating.

Because... I don't know. I just wasn't very nice. I mean, I like him, he seems like a lovely bloke. And I suppose I was just a bit...jealous, I guess.

John H. D. Watson said...

...Right. Holey orange. Can't have that.

jealous?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. I mean, you can talk to him about...stuff I don't know anything about, can't you? And he can understand. And I know it was a huge part of your life, the Army, and, you know, it seemed stupid, because I want you to have that - want you to be able to talk about it.

And then with me away, and then doing nights...I was just feeling sorry for myself when I didn't even get to wake up with you. Which is even more stupid, because I do get that - almost every day, and he's your best friend you haven't seen for years.

John H. D. Watson said...

Okay. I get it. And I missed waking up with you too.

And...I feel like you understand me pretty well really.

Greg Lestrade said...

Really? Good. Murray did tell me...in slightly more colourful language, that if I ever did wrong by you I'd probably be tracked down. And killed. A bit.

...could possibly have done with hearing about slightly fewer of your 3C's of err...conquests, too. Especially given Murray's...colourful story telling.

But that seemed like and even more unreasonable thing to say, given what you've put up with from me. And the fact that you've somehow ended up with me, so really, they should be jealous of me.

John H. D. Watson said...

That was...something...of him. I'll decide what later. Besides unnecessary.

Yeah, I think he got that toward the end, sorry. Usually if I tell him to stop, he only gets worse.

...Do you want to hear about it? I mean, Afghanistan, and the places before that? I don't really talk about most of it because it seems...unfair. To make people have those images in their heads when they never signed up for it. But I'd tell you if you wanted to know. Not on here obviously. The boys shouldn't read that kind of thing.

Greg Lestrade said...

He was fine. I mean, you know, it wasn't like he implied I was out to break your heart or anything. He was just looking out for you - he's probably missed doing it!

I only want to hear about it if you'd like to talk about it. You don't need to do it just for my benefit. I've got a fairly decent imagination. I've seen people who've been shot and blown up virtually on my doorstep. So, yeah, you can talk to me, if you want, but don't feel like you should, if you don't want to.

John H. D. Watson said...

Okay.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm blowing more of my 'use it or lose it' leave at the end of the week. Thurs-Sun. I mean, technically I should have lost it already, but the Super's letting me roll a bit of it forward.

And I've booked us a hire car for Italy.

John H. D. Watson said...

Nice. Want to go to the off road place maybe? See if Carla and Paul want to come along?

Greg Lestrade said...

yeah, that'd be nice. Although the people who run it will deserve some sort of medal if they cope with those four ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

So true. At the very least they'd deserve a day off!

Greg Lestrade said...

it'd be great though. I'll call tomorrow, try and sort it for Saturday. Nicky and Mark will probably enjoy a bit of time together too.

John H. D. Watson said...

Heh. You don't think they want to come along and get all muddy?

Greg Lestrade said...

Nicky did act like she was about 15 again when she was on the back yesterday... but they probably deserve a break. Nicky's been so busy with Mum recently. I wish I could do more.

John H. D. Watson said...

I know, love. You're doing as much as you can. I know it doesn't necessarily help to hear that, but...it's still true.

Greg Lestrade said...

It does help. And I know, really, that Mum and I would just drive each other up the wall anyway. Nicky's always been the patient one.

Holy Tiny Flying Badgers, Batman!

John H. D. Watson said...

...It really does look like a tiny flying badger. That is amazing.

pandabob said...

Those are cool Greg :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Guess what we will wake to tomorrow morning... yes, BadgerBatBoy.

I will attempt to hang him upside down to roost before I leave for work, so you get some peace.

Greg Lestrade said...

(Seriously though, if you saw a little name card by one of those in a museum saying 'Niumbaha superba' you wouldn't be able to resist pulling out a biro and adding a 't' to the end, right??)

John H. D. Watson said...

Superbat to the rescue...

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm going to bed. Don't eat any more cupcakes! ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

I won't, because I'm coming with you.

Greg Lestrade said...

I feel it's compulsory I insert a witty comment here about coming together. But I'm too tired to think of one.

John H. D. Watson said...

Let's concentrate on going (to bed) rather than coming (in...). All right, I'll stop there. It's not witty and it's barely a comment, but I'm tired...

Small Hobbit said...

Hope you guys got lots of sleep last night and the badgerbatboy was content to roost this morning. And that today is rather less stressful for you L.

Greg Lestrade said...

Cheers. I fear stress will be a constant for a bit. Op True Blue is pulling in resources like a black hole.

But I have booked us a morning at the off road place, which is a very bright spot on the horizon.

Small Hobbit said...

My thoughts on that would be best expressed elsewhere, so all I shall do is echo others comments to "stay safe".

Greg Lestrade said...

Well...yeah. I did think it would all be private sector security. Lowest bidder. I mean, that worked so well for the Olympics.

Anon Without A Name said...

Lowest bidder

I shall refrain from making the obvious joke, and just say that I hope working life returns to some semblance of normality for you as soon as possible.

Greg Lestrade said...

You okay Danger? Boys? All very quiet...

John H. D. Watson said...

We're at the allotment, planting things! Sherlock's been told he's not allowed to touch my phone without washing his hands, which he doesn't want to do. He's got a sort of mud shell built up around them...

REReader said...

That sounds like a great whopping lot of fun! :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Brilliant! Is Reg there?

What have you planted?

John H. D. Watson said...

He was, but he left a little while ago. Either he'd had enough digging for the day, or enough Sherlock for the day...

Just lettuce and chard. It was mostly digging, which Sherlock wasn't crazy about, so he mainly played in the mud. I may need to buy him clothes specifically for gardening. Ones that can be hosed off before he enters the flat.

Greg Lestrade said...

Brilliant! I love you

John H. D. Watson said...

I love you too. How's work? Still bad?

anonx said...

Okay.

It sorta worries me when you give one word answers John. I hope you're all right.

John H. D. Watson said...

Fine, thanks.

REReader said...

It was mostly digging, which Sherlock wasn't crazy about, so he mainly played in the mud.

Which forcefully brought this to mind... :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Worries me, too. But... Well, I hope we talk about stuff off here if something's bothering you.

Work is.. Better in the sense I'm now waiting to see if things will be okay, not fixing them? If that is better. Got hauled upstairs to explain everything. Which was nice.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah...we can talk later. I'll try to organise my thoughts. Or something.

Were they satisfied with the explanation? It sounds like a bit of a mess, I'm sorry you're in the middle of it.

Sherlock said...

Can we go here and see birds?

http://www.longleat.co.uk/shows/hunters-of-the-sky

Greg Lestrade said...

I didn't mean to make it sound like we needed to talk now. Just that I hope we do, when you want to.

I always feel like I'm walking an impossibly fine line between encouraging you to talk to me when and if you want, and being pushy and forcing you into it when you don't want. And I probably get it wrong a lot. But the alternative is silence. And... I don't think either of us cope with that very well.

Greg Lestrade said...

When do you want to go, Sherlock? Did you have fun at the allotment? I hope you helped John.

I'll give you a rub down later, love. I expect you'll need one after digging.

Sherlock said...

Soon! This weekend? The digging part was boring and went on for ages but I talked to Reg about strawberries and a woman about potatoes and then I helped plant seeds and I was the best at it because they're tiny and my fingers are small. I hope they come up soon, they have to before I go back to school right?

John H. D. Watson said...

But the alternative is silence. And... I don't think either of us cope with that very well.

No, we don't. You're right.

You've said a few things now and then that make me think you don't feel you know me as well as you want to. And offering to tell you all that was...me trying to fix that I suppose. And your response sort of sounded like you didn't want to hear it. Which I don't really think is what you meant, you were just trying not to force me into anything, but that's how I took it at the time. Sorry.

I'll give you a rub down later, love

That'd be nice, yeah. Thanks.

Small Hobbit said...

I think you may have to wait a bit longer than that Sherlock, because the seeds need time to get going (think John in the morning).

You could always grow cress seeds in the flat if you want fast growing seeds. We used to grow them in egg shells with faces drawn on the eggs so the cress becomes hair.

Sherlock said...

We have eggs! How soon do they come up, is it really fast?

zeph said...

You could watch these little guys in the meantime, Sherlock. They are amazing.

http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/jurgen-otto-peacock-spider

Sherlock said...

They look like they have glitter all over!

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm starting to think I very rarely manage to sound like what I mean to say.

Sherlock - we can do cress. You'll be able to see it really growing in a couple of days. You'll probably be able to eat it in your packed lunch the first week back at school.

REReader said...

Some of those look like faces!

Sherlock, I've never grown cress in eggshells so I don't know how long it takes--Small Hobbit will have to get back to you on that!--but I did find instructions, if you want, on the Planet Science website.

John H. D. Watson said...

...Yeah. Me too. Sorry. Again.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's really not your fault.

I'm on the way home. I am stopping to buy cress seeds.

Greg Lestrade said...

(Sherlock, with the instructed RR posted, if you put them somewhere dark for the first few days, they'll grow waaaay faster/bigger for you. Then put them in the sun.)

pandabob said...

Cress heads are the growing lesson of choice at most schools I know of for the reason of them being fast growing but they always look rather odd to me and eating the 'hair' later seems weird!!

I hope you're all having a relaxing evening together :-)

Kestrel337 said...

Those bird shows look amazing. I've been to a couple that might've been similar. Once an owl went right over my head so I could feel the pressure change of it passing! Didn't hear a thing though, which was actually the point.

Have you ever tried growing seeds in a zip baggie taped to the window? Beans and sunflowers work well, with just a little bit of wet paper towel. Then you can watch the roots, too. Sometimes they transplant OK but not very often.

Sounds good to keep talking, Greg and John..just had our eighth wedding anniversary yesterday, but nothing was mentioned by my other half, it all just feels a bit...you know in one of your other posts, John, you talked about people feeling overwhelmed, and unable to cope?...yeh...xx

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry to hear that Anon. I've been in similar-ish situations. I hope you have someone/where you can talk

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm sorry, Anon. That's...hard. Good luck to you.

Anonymous said...

Anon, my sister and her husband once spent a miserable week each waiting for the other one to remember their anniversary and say something. Now they don,t wait and just had their 28th.
