late nights and early mornings

I just got Sherlock back to bed after a nightmare. He said things with teeth were chasing me and Lestrade and he couldn't warn us, which is...a pretty terrible dream. We got up for a little while and had tea (me) and warm milk with honey (him) and talked on the sofa. I tried to convince both of us that the world isn't really a terrible place even though it seems that way sometimes.

He called Mycroft's school stupid roughly thirty seven times and said he'd never go there, he'd go to 'the other one'. I wonder how Eton feels about being the other one. He even said he missed Mycroft, which he'll hardly ever admit.

It was a big change, straight from motorbikes and guests and Mycroft and the dogs and Anthea all being there to a very quiet flat and school. I need to manage that transition better for him next time somehow.

I have a headache and an interview tomorrow, so I suppose I have to try to sleep again. I hope all of you are all right and so is everyone you love.

Hang in there, mate. It's only a terrible place till morning. Then there's...you know, birds and caffeine and pancakes and shit. Not literally shit. Though that can be satisfying in its own way.

Greg Lestrade said...

Love you John. Sorry, I probably didn't help Sherlock with the mood I'm in. We're both lucky to have you.

John H. D. Watson said...

Love you too and I doubt I did any better than you did. Next time maybe we should recruit Mrs Hudson.

Sometimes the world is a scary, horrible place. But there is good in it. When I get too down, I look to things like this to bring me back up.

Sherlock was a bit tired this morning, but happy about his cress and eggs at school...so he's doing okay finding things to be cheerful about

Anonymous said...

Good, glad to hear it, it's the only sensible approach to these situations.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. Need to take a leaf out of his book.

New life is happy-making in all varieties. :)

Speaking of which, how are Rachel and your youngest niece doing?

KHolly said...

Hope your headache cleared up before your interview John.

pandabob said...

How you doing today Greg?

How are you John? feeling better? I hope the interview went/goes well :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

Thanks, guys. The interview went all right and I've just got done having tea with Murray and his mum so she could tell me off for him not keeping in touch more. Because that's how that works somehow.

murray said...

That's what you get for being the responsible one.

pandabob said...

I'm glad the interview went ok John :-)

Anonymous said...

I suspect I would like Murray's mum. A whole lot.

Give Sherlock a few extra hugs today, if he likes hugs. And any of the rest of you with small people, give them hugs too. It's going to be a long day.

I'm glad your meeting--and tea!--went well, John.

I hope your schoolday was good, Sherlock. Did you do or learn anything interesting?

I hope your day's been better than yesterday, L.

(And I'm relieved to report that I've heard something from most of my Boston and marathoner friends, and all are unharmed, if not precisely all right.)

Greg Lestrade said...

Spectacularly badly right now

REReader said...

I'm sorry. :(

pandabob said...

you're really testing my resistance you know Greg, all I want to do is use the shorthand thing of sending internet hugs because I can't quite find the right words to say to try and make things better even though I know you find the idea of being offered hugs by strangers weird. I'm so sorry you're having a bad time, I know the likely hood is there is nothing we here can do to help but we will if you can think of anything I'm sure :-)

That is a seriously garbled mess I know, sorry.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - I'm sorry, love. Is there anything I can do? I'm glad you get to come home soon.

Greg Lestrade said...

Might be late sorry

John H. D. Watson said...

All right. Call me if you want to, if you have time. I love you. I hope everything is... not too bad.

Small Hobbit said...

Echoing Anonybob, so sending positive vibes as being all I can do.

Greg Lestrade said...

Call when I can

Bright side - found suspect

John H. D. Watson said...

That's excellent news.

Sherlock said...

Was there a chase? Did you bash him??

Why don't they sell fertilised eggs at the supermarket so if you didn't eat them they would hatch into chickens? That would be the best.

Greg Lestrade said...

Haven't arrested him yet. Just found him

Sherlock said...

Is he hiding?

Greg Lestrade said...

A bit. I'm hiding more

John H. D. Watson said...

That...doesn't sound quite as good. I'd tell you to be careful, but I know you will.

Sherlock said...

Why are you hiding? Are you going to jump out at him? DON'T GET HURT

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm hiding because we think he has a gun and I don't. But there are lots of people here who are on my side who do and someone's talking to him. And I'm safe just stick and quite bored and a bit achy now. It's mainly boring from where I am (behind a wall)

Sherlock said...

And you have to stay there until he comes out and gives up?

Greg Lestrade said...

I think I sort of have to because there's not a way for me to move without him seeing me.

I really need a coffee

Sherlock said...

John looks worried now and he's making tea but you're okay aren't you? You just can't come home yet? I have dried blackcurrants and we played a word association game at school today where someone says a word and then you say the word that words makes you think of. Blackcurrants make me think of horses.

KHolly said...

TV always makes situations like yours seem so exciting. I didn't realize when they cut out the boring bits it was stuck behind a wall needing coffee. Hope it gets resolved soon for you. Keep your head down in the meantime.

Sherlock, I expect most people would be annoyed if one day they had unexpected chickens in their house. Also, remember that chicken eggs for hatching have to be kept warm (that's why you have the incubator for the ones at school) and chicken eggs for eating have to be kept cold (to prevent them spoiling). Baby chickens would not grow in the eggs inside the refrigerator.

Plus if the eggs were fertilized, by the time people ate them there would be baby chickens growing inside, which- again, not what people usually expect when they crack an egg into the pan. Many would be grossed out. Some cultures do eat half-developed chicken or duck embryos cooked in the egg but I think it's a bit of an acquired taste. Filipinos call it balut - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut_(egg)

Anonymous said...

Oh lord, took me forever to get that comment posted and I didn't see the updates. I hope your people can persuade him to be sensible...and that you don't cramp up waiting. :\ Doesn't sound like much fun.

Greg Lestrade said...

Black currants make me think of cushions.

I'm fine except I've got fierce pins and needles in my leg. I don't really have anything to do but stay still. The negotiators talk and the people with the guns all wait and watch and I lie here worrying about needing a piss.

If we bought eggs straight from someone with chickens they might be fertilised

Sherlock said...

I would eat that but I would rather have a baby chicken and John says he's glad our eggs don't do that because it would make then even harder to cook.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm glad you're all right apart from that. How small is the place you're stuck in? I suppose pretty small if you can't stretch the pins and needles out.

Cushions make me think of chocolates. I don't know why.

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't keep eggs in the fridge. They don't cook as well and can last longer out.

Quite small space it's the space in front of the house they store their bin in. Nowhere to stretch.

I think he might get bored soon. Hope so.

Chocolates make me think of ribbon

Sherlock said...

So if we bought eggs from someone with chickens and they were fertilized and we didn't keep them in the fridge would we have baby chickens because they could live in the allotment and eat all the bugs!

Ribbons make me think of SNAKES.

Greg Lestrade said...

Think they need to be warmer than our kitchen kiddo.

Sherlock said...

How about ducks

John H. D. Watson said...

Ducks would also need to be warmer. Also they'd need a pond once they hatched.

Greg Lestrade said...

Indian runners don't need a pond ;)

Very occasionally you get eggs from a supermarket that hatch, Sherlock. Google it. But you're going to have chicken at school, which is much better.

Danger, want to come over here tell this clown my shifts over and you want me back ;)

third bird said...

Oh, I love you guys. Even when you're making me hit refresh a lot when I should be doing other things...

Hope it's all over and you're drinking coffee soon, L.

John H. D. Watson said...

I really do, don't tempt me... I could bring you coffee at the same time.

He's now googling Indian Runners and is fascinated by the way they stand up. I think the next step will be youtube videos of running ducks.

Greg Lestrade said...

Were not having house ducks

Sherlock said...

But look how they stand up!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6z8FCB-18c

Except that man said they like to eat bugs and then he said like slugs and snails and spiders and NONE OF THOSE ARE BUGS.

Greg Lestrade said...

Something might b hsppening

REReader said...

They seem to think they are people, the way those ducks walk! And you are quite right, Sherlock, that man seems rather shaky on the definition of "bug".

Snakes make me think of lizards.

Stay safe and not too pins-and-needly, L!

John H. D. Watson said...

Something good?

Anonymous said...

I think spiders and snails and slugs definitely count as bugs, Sherlock. Bug isn't the same as insect.

Sherlock said...

I thought bugs had to have mouth parts? Do slugs have those?

Greg Lestrade said...

I've got mouthparts good for sucking.

some people don't mean true bugs they just use it to mean all sorts.

people were moving. stopped now. thought theymight be rescuing me but maybe they got to change shifts ;)

getting cold now. and hungry. one bumcheek now numb.

Sherlock said...

Can we come and yell at them for not getting you out?

Greg Lestrade said...

sorry Sherlock I can't watch it right now but I know what they're like and we're still not having them.

Anonymous said...

No offense Sherlock, but I don't think your yelling (or even John's yelling) will help much. I'm sure they would like to get Lestrade out, but it may not be safe for them to charge in after him right now. I'm not a police officer but as I understand these things, their primary goal is to wind things down as calmly as possible so nobody gets hurt.

They don't cook as well and can last longer out.

Shows what I know! I guess we all just assume they have to be kept in the fridge because that's how we buy them these days.

Greg Lestrade said...

now i'm missing the footy too.

pandabob said...

I'm sure someone will be watching and can give you updates Greg ;-)

I hope you're out of there soon though :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

now happen

Sherlock said...

But I want him to come home now it's dinner time and he should be home :(

Mycroft called me and he says we can't have ducks too and to tell you to be careful Lestrade.

Nicky said...

You're being very grown up Sherlock. I'm sure he'll be home as soon as he can.

Give him a big hug from me, John.

Keep yourself in one piece, Gregory.

John H. D. Watson said...

We both will, Nicky, thanks. All he can stand. And apparently biscuits.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm out!

It was a toy gun and a laser pointer... and a huge waste of my time.

What's the footy score?

John H. D. Watson said...

Still 0 - 0. I'm really glad you're all right.

pandabob said...

Glad you're out Greg :-) and that it wasn't dangerous in the end

its 0 0 apparently

Sherlock said...

Are you coming home now?? I am making you chocolate biscuits and we haven't even had dinner yet! John says do you want takeaway because we can go and get something and I want pizza.

Greg Lestrade said...

more danger from SO19 in the end!

but he/his mates did shoot someone, so...well, rather play safe.

I have numb bollocks...and a completely dead leg. Getting a ride home.

Greg Lestrade said...

I am coming home, tell Mrs Hudson she's very very kind if she's letting you at her oven again.

takeaway is fine, whatever you want.

John H. D. Watson said...

It was very kind of her. It was her idea too, when Sherlock went to tell her what was happening.

Can't wait to see you.

Anonymous said...

What a royal pain...still, best all around that it wasn't a real gun, and no one got shot, so there's that.

now i'm missing the footy too.

Surely there's a charge you can tack on for that? First degree making an officer miss the match? Maybe knock it down to second, since he didn't know you were there?

Greg Lestrade said...

He knew I was there. I just happened to look down (checking my flies were done up, actually, didn't want to arrest someone with my flies open...) and see the red laser on my shirt.

Given why I wanted to arrest him, throwing myself in the dirt seemed wise.

Can't wait to see you either, John. Won't be long now.

pandabob said...

my god Greg that sounds horrid!!

Lots of hugs needed this evening from your family :-)

enjoy your takeaway and the biscuits Sherlock was so very nice to make you. :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm kind of glad I didn't know that until after I knew it wasn't a real gun.

Greg Lestrade said...

didn't think it'd be the best idea to tell you all.

(my flies were done up, if any of you wondered.)

REReader said...

I think we're all grateful we didn't know all that until after finding out it wasn't a real gun... O_O

Slugs and snails are mollusks. Are mollusks bugs? (And here I worked in the entomology department of the AMNH for 9 months, you'd think I'd know!) ...It would have been so much simpler if that man had just called them all garden pests.

Victoria said...

Sherlock, you might like these videos, if John and Lestrade approve: http://www.youtube.com/user/OrderoftheGoodDeath?feature=watch Caitlin, the mortician, has a good sense of humour :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Dunno if I'd call a mollusc a bug. Think of creepy-crawlies more as bugs than slithery-slimeys.

Have just been hugged pretty much to death by my boys :)

pandabob said...

Good job Sherlock and you John, hugged almost to death was definitely what was in order tonight ;-)

I hope you all have some time to relax together this evening :-)

REReader said...

Being hugged by those you love is a good way to go. ;)

(I certainly don't think of mollusks as bugs! They don't seem buggy, somehow.)

Greg Lestrade said...

John is doctoring me Sherlock is pushing biscuits into my mouth :)

Sherlock said...

Victoria I will watch it if John lets me, is she a real mortician?

Anonymous said...

I'm with Sherlock. Bugs have mouthparts, exoskeletons and legs. Frequently too many legs. The ducks can eat them.

Anonymous said...

He knew I was there. I just happened to look down (checking my flies were done up, actually, didn't want to arrest someone with my flies open...) and see the red laser on my shirt.

Definitely first degree then, in addition to everything else.

Cripes, I'm doubly glad it turned out to be a laser pointer now! Still kind of amazes me that you can get through a situation like that so coolly and not flip out even though you're stuck there with nothing to do but think about what could go wrong.

Have a great evening, it sounds like you deserve to relax now. :)

pandabob said...

get through professionally and go through it all with John later that's our Greg ;-) he's quite something isn't he?

I'm glad you're letting your boys look after you Greg :-)
