I had another interview yesterday, the last one. I can't remember which letter doctor I'm on... I think it might be E, and I've already got a Dr E, so this one will have to be Dr F. He's probably a bit older than Lestrade, used to be a medical officer aboard a submarine (not the Army, but you can't have everything...). He's been doing this about ten years.
He talked a bit about the differences between this and treating people in the military - a lot more drugs, for one thing, which I'd expected, although possibly not to the extent he implied. More of people attempting to hide weapons in various orifices, which I don't think I ever saw anyone in the Army try to do unless you count one young man and the barrel of his rifle, but he wasn't trying to hide it.
Anyway, I think we'll do pretty well together. I asked him if he'd take me on, and he said yes, so there we are. Of course, I still need an actual job, but one thing at a time...
Here are some glasses that make 3D movies 2D again.
And here's a poem I just read for the first time and really like.

Your Catfish Friend
Richard Brautigan
If I were to live my life
in catfish forms
in scaffolds of skin and whiskers
at the bottom of a pond
and you were to come by
one evening
when the moon was shining
down into my dark home
and stand there at the edge
of my affection
and think, "It's beautiful
here by this pond. I wish
somebody loved me,"
I'd love you and be your catfish
friend and drive such lonely
thoughts from your mind
and suddenly you would be
at peace,
and ask yourself, "I wonder
if there are any catfish
in this pond?It seems like
a perfect place for them."

I can't think of any Doctor beginning with F apart from Dr Feelgood. This is what I have christened your new mentor.
I suspect he'll enjoy that. I was going to switch to his real last initial at some point, but now I think I'll just call him Dr Feelgood.
That poem made me cry. So my eyes were bleary when I mis-read the word mentor. Which made Lestrade's comment...I can't say out of character, but I don't want to know how you'd get a new one of those.
Yeah, it's that sort of poem, isn't it?
Ha. I don't want a new one of those! The one I've got is fine, thanks.
It is a lovely poem.
Glad to be of service. And didn't even have to try too hard...I'll have you calling him that to his face soon enough...
Did you tell him about the blogs? The boys? Me?
The one I've got is fine, thanks.
And he already has a spare ;)
He worked with submariners, I'm sure he's been called worse things...
Did you tell him about the blogs? The boys? Me?
Yes, yes, and yes. I expect you'll meet him sooner or later. Maybe you already have, actually. I suppose you might've worked with him at some point.
Probably have, yeah.
Nicky literally nearly killed me for managing to suggest a new name for something so well that she ended up using said name at work.... it was years ago. If she reads this she'll remember.
In my experience, submariners are... how can I put this politely? Like "normal" matelots, but turned up to eleven :-)
Anyway, congrats on finding a mentor, John :-)
John, that man of yours is a BASTARD.
One who thinks he's funny.
(He just texted me, just to make me come on here so he can further embarrass me as if it wasn't enough the first time!)
L - what was it? I must know...
Nameless - They all go a bit mad down there, medical fact. ;) Thanks!
Ha! You were the one who told me what you'd done. God, I laughed so hard. You were SO angry. Still love me though, right, lil' sis'?
Nicky - sorry, but now I only want to know more!
John (I'm not talking to him.) I had a new job. And I was issued with a dictaphone, to help me record my boss and make notes and order things and just - well, lots of things.
And that man of yours discovered this (it sounds a bit sad now, but I was excited! It was all new and, anyway, I stupidly told him) and he spent DAYS. Literally, DAYS, calling it a 'cocktaphone' at every opportunity.
"Did your boss make you get your COCKtaphone out in the office today?" and all that.
Until the day my boss started talking and I said "I just have to fetch my cocktaphone from my desk, Sir!"
He looked at me like - well, you can imagine. I was mortified.
BASTARD, Orio. (Sorry, boys.)
don't, don't. can't stop laughing again now. your face when you saw me next!
she hit me, John. tried to beat me up!
great news about finding yourself a mentor John, I'm glad things are moving forward for you :-)
Greg you really were the very worse of big brothers I'm surprised you've made it to the age you have ;-)
A COCKTAPHONE
sorry Nicky, I am dying, that is bloody hilarious I'm so sorry
Thanks, Anonybob. :)
you two deserve each other.
(I admit, I can look back on it and laugh. Now. After twenty-odd years. Just.)
Nicky, a jury of little sisters would never have convicted you... :)
Congrats on finding a compatible mentor, John! And in case he's checking out the blogs--Hi, Dr. F!
I really love that poem, too.
you two deserve each other.
Hope so!
RR - thanks :) If he mentions cocktaphones next time I see him, I'll know...
John's still laughing Nicky. terrible man.
Because it's hilarious.
every time I veer towards feeling slightly guilty at my sister's distress in her first job...I just picture the scene... And it's too funny to feel bad about
Lestrade, you truly were the epitome of a big brother!
Nicky, you're not alone! My boss actually did something a bit like that. She was giving us a lecture on filing, because everything was horribly out of order, and she said, "You should all know that it's pen, then penis..."
Everyone broke up laughing and she turned bright red.
Hi L, hope you're feeling better this morning - unless Nicky did you in whilst you were asleep ;)
Yeah, I am thanks. Pouring coffee down my throat and working out which fme used to be a submariner.
And doing actual work too, obviously.
Cocktaphone! Sorry, Nicky - but that is awesome!
And yaaay for Richard Brautigan! I love him! He has the most amazing writing style, just wonderful.
Just wanted to say, John, that you make my life better in so many ways. And doing what I'm doing right now just makes me appreciate you and the boys even more and...you just make my life brilliant.
Hahaha, cocktaphone.
Congrats on finding a mentor you mesh well with, John! :)
...You may feel differently if I'm still vomiting when you get home. You're all right today? No further urge to expel your internal organs that's not migraine-related?
Oh no John :-( I hope you feel better soon
Jesus, love is there anything I can do? Do you want me to bring you anything? Or fetch Sherlock? Is he okay?
I feel fine.
You should have texted or something, I could have... Okay, don't know what I could've done.
I wasn't up to looking at bright phone screens until just now. I think Sherlock's fine - his school hasn't said anything and I'm sure they would've. Mrs Hudson's picking him up but if you could come home a little early thatd b enice. I mean I'll be fine if you can't, it's all right. Just be nice to see you
Is it a bug, or food poisoning? Or...I dunno.
I'll come back now, see you, see Mrs H, pick up Sherlock, take him to the park or allotment or something to wear him out a bit then come back to you, see if Mrs H will bake pink cakes with him.
He wanted me to go to school to see his art club thing from yesterday anyway.
Think I'm going to blame lunch with Dr Feelgood if you and Sherlock are both okay.
you sure it's allr ight? love you
Sherlock says he hopes you're better soon and do you have a temperature?
barely. he can check it when he gets home if he wants to. did he show you his art things? I might take a nap.
He did. Very impressive.
You should. We'll be really quiet when we get back, which won't be for quite a while.
John, I hope you don't see this until you feel much better and a nap works. Food poisoning is no fun. Have you checked with Dr. Feelgood to see if he doesn't feel so good?
rsf
Oh, dear, that's miserable--feel better, John.
What was your art project this week, Sherlock?
If Dr Feelgood isn't well Sherlock and I prescribe him milk and alcohol. :)
We're digging in the sunshine and getting tips on erecting canes for fruit and peas and beans and things.
I can hear you out there. You can let Sherlock come in if he wants to, I'm awake.
I dug a really deep hole and we met a woman with a REALLY nice garden and Lestrade's showing me how to make a pompom! I'm coming to show you should Lestrade make you tea?
Yes please, and a piece of toast. Don't really want to eat, but I should try.
What made her garden so especially nice?
nice bit of marmite on it? Give you strength?
It was really neat in rows and we took a picture and she had little labels on everything we definitely need labels.
labels are a must Sherlock, you don't want to go harvesting carrots and come home with turnips do you ;-)
I'm glad you're feeling a little bit better John :-)
L - that's mean, I'm telling
Sherlock - that does sound nice. Are you going to make us labels?
everyone - thanks for the kind words. And I think Dr Feelgood is probably fine, we didn't have the same thing.
Yes I'll make labels. Are you still tired? You could make a pompom too Lestrade can show you how or you can sleep and we're having baked potato for dinner and you can decide if you want some later or I'll eat yours.
I hope he's a good natured sort of fellow because you are so totally going to call him Dr. Feelgood to his face sooner rather than later.
Sherlock - I'll come and sit on the sofa and you can show me how to make them okay? and then i'll probably fall asleep
kholly - I'm going to do it the very next time I see him!
My new goal in life is to get John saying 'Stiffyscope'.
oh no....
Stiffyscope
Hah, that's perfect :-)
John - I hope you're starting to feel much better now.
I guess I don't understand--is it okay to embarrass people as long as you find it funny? Not trying to be mean but that's what it sounds like your saying. :-(
I think it's a lot more complex than that. Sadly I can't yet influence strangers with the power of my mind.
Im not sure I can form a coherent explanation at this time of the morning. But it's worth bearing in mind I often say things here for comic effect.
Been thinking about this all morning.
Maybe urs all about consent, and an understanding of your relationship with the other person involved? With Nicky, we both were mean to each other for laughs, yes. But neither of us ever overstepped a certain mark, and I certainly don't hold any grudges over what she did to me. She's never said she holds anything I did to her against me, but she can chime in if she does.
With the Stiffyscope and Jhn, that's not actually something I'm going to do. There's no need. You know the Nicky story, you can all follow the path of the humour to what would happen if John did say it, ergo no need for it to happen.
But it boils down to understanding your own relationships, I guess.
I think it's also worth noting, anon, that you usually know the limits of teasing with people you love and who love you. It's not like you're walking around embarassing strangers on the street.
That said, hey, guys. Sounds like it's been an exciting week all around.
See, now, Lestrade, your brain *can* influence others, because I think we were pretty much thinking the same thing at the same time, there.
Glad it makes sense to someone. I've been trying to work it out all morning.
Human relationships are complex. If the same rules applied to everyone you interact with, it would be perfectly fine to kiss strangers on the street the way we kiss people we love, but obviously it doesn't work like that, and teasing doesn't work like that either.
That is a very good point John :-)
You and Nicky seen to have a very successful sibling relationship Greg so I guess you both got the balance of thing as close to right as possible :-)
I sort of understand what your saying and I sort of don't. Because even if you know the other person really well and you know they will forgive you, they were still embarrassed or hurt just so you could have a laugh, and that doesn't seem so right. And I know you couldn't make your sister say that, but your still laughing about it. Lots of people here were laughing about it, and it doesn't feel funny when you make an embarassing mistake so I don't even know why people think someone else being embarrased is something to laugh at. There's lots of ways to joke with and tease people without embarassing them in front of other people. And I think now everyone is going to say I'm stupid and can't take a joke so I'll just go away again.
We don't usually have a go at commenters here, so I don't think you need to be concerned that people will say you're stupid :)
Being embarrassed is a big deal for some people (like me for instance) but other people are much less bothered about it. Given what we know of L. I think we can say that if Nicky was also one of the people who are really bothered by embarrassment then he wouldn't have done it - that's where the family knowledge comes in.
Lancs. Anon
I hope no one here would call another person stupid for having a different point of view
And clearly you wouldn't enjoy a relationship where teasing was a part of it, which is fine. But equally, other people don't mind. I don't mind. I choose to do silly things, and to share stories of my embarrassment on my blog because I like that other people will get a laugh. It doesn't make either of us right or wrong.
I've always played the clown because for me it's a way of diffusing tension. I don't imagine I'll ever change.
Anonymous, are you an only child? I ask because the type of teasing Lestrade is doing is the kind of teasing almost every older sibling I have ever met does. That includes myself.
And the reason people were laughing about it was because it happened a long time ago, and Nicky herself may have been embarrassed, but she was teasing Greg right back. And, well, I guess it's just something those of us with older siblings can relate to.
Like John said above, teasing is different with everyone. Emotions don't convey well over the internet or text, and we only know the guys from these blogs. Lestrade knows the people in his life, and what is appropriate and not.
Pip - she gave as good as she got! It's not just the older siblings who do it.
Oh, I bet! I'm a middle child so I got it both ways. I think it's just the wsy of siblings.
