hexaflexagons

Mycroft sent me this. I think Sherlock will want to make one as soon as he sees it...

I spent yesterday mostly vomiting and drinking water (repeat as necessary) and L was kind enough to fetch Sherlock from school and take him to the allotment where he apparently dug an enormous hole that he wants to show me tomorrow. I'm mostly better today. Just tired and wary of food. L's migraine is still hovering though and all in all we're not in the best shape. And I feel like I should've timed my food poisoning better, which is...absurd.

That's it, I think. Too tired to think of anything else at least. We're going to eat, two of us cautiously and Sherlock ravenously and then have a quiet evening.

Those shapes are too confusing... but cool.

And yes, please in future book all food poisoning into the diary at least three weeks in advance. You silly man.

John H. D. Watson said...

It would be a lot more convenient if I could... And then cancel the appointment at the last minute...

Greg Lestrade said...

You did a good job with your kissing strangers analogy this morning. Literally the only thing I could think of to compare to was spanking. I wasn't sure it would help.

John H. D. Watson said...

It sort of gets more complicated the more you think about it... I don't know. Most of my relationships have involved quite a lot of mockery and teasing, even before the Army.

Greg Lestrade said...

Some of mine have...but I couldn't really pinpoint why it was okay sometimes and not others. Just different relationships, like you said. Fine line though, between teasing/mockery and bullying, definitely.

Anyway, tell me if I get too much. I'll stop.

Those hexaflexagons are extremely cool! I don't think I've run into them before, but the video puts me strongly in mind of a Mobius strip, which I played with during math class in school. (Quietly!)

I hope you both recover over the weekend...

John H. D. Watson said...

RR - they are pretty cool. I might try making one too.

L - you're fine, love. I like it. When you're not threatening me with marmite. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

You loved the soup! All the lovely yummy tastiness in that soup is Marmite. So it's not a threat. You may still be resisting in mind, but your body has given in.

Isn't it part of the beauty of human relationships, that we all have different things that are enjoyable? Hubster can tease me at home, but never in public. And sometimes not at home, and certain subjects are just not on the table at all. Maybe it's a question of knowing yourself, knowing your loved ones, knowing the situation.

And my daughter watched the video and just ran upstairs with about 70 sheets of paper, scissors, and every highlighter in the house. The scrap fairy thanks you.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - it is not marmite, it's tomatoes! Tomatoes taste good.

Greg Lestrade said...

Tomato soup from a tin is tomatoes. You mean that Tomarmitoes taste good ;)

Kestrel - it can certainly be...a learning curve, to discover what's okay and what isn't, with a new friend/partner. And even discovering things about yourself.

John H. D. Watson said...

Tomato soup from a tin tastes like it's from a tin.

Kestrel - sorry about the ten million bits of paper you now have on your floor...

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock was so good tonight. I'm so proud of him. He even pulled my hair when I tucked him in to make me feel better, because he knows I like it.

And I'm reading about the whole 'internet detectives' surrounding the Boston bombings and being...slightly terrified? I mean, not that the police don't always need the public's help...but naming people, publicly, from footage you've seen on the internet - that's scary. And sort of makes you wonder what people think we train for.

John H. D. Watson said...

He was very good, yes. It was sweet of him to let me sleep.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. And the house was still standing when you woke!

I'm going to go get ready for bed.

John H. D. Watson said...

Me too. I'll be asleep here in a minute otherwise.

Greg Lestrade said...

you.. might want to give me a few mins. or go first.

John H. D. Watson said...

Okay. Go ahead then.

Greg Lestrade said...

okay. done. you still awake? or should i wake you?...not that you can answer the second.

And Sherlock wanted to go swimming tomorrow or SUnday. I said it depended how you felt.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm up. Swimming would be okay probably yeah. Sunday might be better.

Greg Lestrade said...

yeah. not sure how tomorrow's going to go at work. and Sunday will be manic.

sorry, feel bad nothaving a day off at the weekend.

John H. D. Watson said...

Do you know when you're off next?

Greg Lestrade said...

no. early or mid next week, I hope.

John H. D. Watson said...

All right.

Greg Lestrade said...

sorry...hopefully it'll be a quiet weekend, so I'll get a few days early in the week.

love you

John H. D. Watson said...

It's okay, I know it's busy right now. Love you too.

L, they've cornered the guy in Boston, and there's at least one cop who is stranded by a tree, really close to where we think he is. I thought of you and your laser pointer kid. Wish a laser pointer was all this guy had!

I feel like all I've done on facebook the last three days is say, over and over, "if you think the person in this random photo you got from a random place is suspicious, call the boston cops. sharing it on facebook does nothing (at best) and makes life a lot harder for the almost-certainly innocent person in this photo."

apparently a bunch people focused on the facebook of a kid who's been missing for a week, and called his family and told him their son was a terrorist and they hoped he was dead. and they didn't even have the right person. they just bothered and harassed a family whose son is missing.

i'm going to walk away from the internet for awhile.

Piplover said...

Just wanted to say they got the guy. They retrieved him alive and it's over. Thank God.

Was just coming back to say this. Good job, Boston PD (and FBI, and State Troopers...etc etc).

Kestrel337 said...

1) ten million bits of paper are a small price to pay for kids who are engrossed in such things rather than the latest boy band.

2) absolutely, learning the boundaries and watching them flux and shift is occasionally maddening but ultimately wonderful.

3) hope everyone feels better soon.

4) massive thanks to all the folks who work so very hard and risk so very much to keep us all safe.

The sunshine and blue sky has once again brought out some terrifying fashions on to Londons streets.

Kate L said...

Lestrade - I can believe it! I still remember how astounded I was to hear that apparently 80s fashion was making a comeback... I mean, really? People have forgotten how grim it was the first time around?

Mycroft said...

Are you wearing your flip-flops again Lestrade?

John H. D. Watson said...

He's at work, so I hope not, but you never know...

Greg Lestrade said...

And I thought you were such a nice young man, Mycroft...

No, I'm not. But if the sun stays out I hope to get out and enjoy it this evening. I hope you're at least outside studying, if not outside just...enjoying yourself. I mean, more than you enjoy yourself studying...

I'd love to be wearing flipflops, but after a nice day yesterday (which everyone spent inside) it's raining and cold again.

Glad your weather is better!

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

Think you'd get pretty cold toes here if you wore them. It's beautiful and sunny, but still a bit chilly in the breeze, or as soon as you're out of direct sun.

Danger, if you and the boy wonder are free anytime, I could be distracted with coffee and cake.

John H. D. Watson said...

we could head over if you don't mind us slightly muddy.

Greg Lestrade said...

You forgave me for smelling faintly of bins the other night, I'm sure I can forgive mud. Having a good time?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah it was great. :) Should be with you shortly, I'll text you.

Greg Lestrade said...

Great. And Arsenal won. Happy days.

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh, and for all you Bostonians (and concerned others), I thought it might be nice for you to know that for every person who finishes the London marathon tomorrow, £2 will be donated to helping the victims of the bombings in Boston. I think it's Virgin who are putting up the cash - they sponsor the London Marathon. Should be between $100,000-$110,000, I hope it can make a difference to people living with life-changing injuries or mental trauma, or anyone else who needs help as a result of the bombing.

Sherlock said...

can you come home with us if you bring work?

Greg Lestrade said...

No mate, not today. Sorry.

I was going to say you wouldn't like a murder suspect sitting on our sofa...but actually I think you would.

Anonymous said...

L, that's great. We have a lot of people who lost legs, including kids, and I know that modern prosthetics can be pretty expensive. I hope lots of people finish your marathon, and that the day is as fun at the end as it is at the beginning.

John, does Sherlock manage to get muddier at the allotment or at the dirt bike track?

rsf

John H. D. Watson said...

L - he says he would definitely like a murderer and would ask him lots of questions... I told him he wasn't getting one for Christmas.

rsf - the dirt bike track, but not by much. And he tends to want to take his shoes off at the allotment even when it's this chilly and then I find his socks full of mud bits later from when he puts them back on.

Jo said...

John, I am SOOOOOOOO jealous of your allotment. I want one, but, well, I'm certain I'd never have the time for it and it would become some overgrown bramble patch or something and they would take it off us and banish me from London or something.

But do keep us in mind if you have too much to eat - we'll take it off your hands! And if that man of yours wants to cook it into something delicious first we wouldn't say no ;)

Greg, I just thought you should know that he-who-shall-not-be-named has an exhibition, just off the Edgware Road. I refused to go to the PV, obviously, but they sent out the catalogue anyway. There are two pictures of you. I just, well, thought you should know, I suppose? Sorry, I should have phoned you I expect, but I'm in Paris right now and it just crossed my mind, and then I was distracted by your allotment. Anyway, you want to talk, you know where I am. And come to dinner again! And plan your wedding! (And ignore your bossy friends!)

Greg Lestrade said...

Right. Thanks for telling me.

How are you both, anyway? What are you doing in Paris - show?

And we've made some lists! On of them a list of the other lists we should make...

pandabob said...

My god he's creepy!!

I Hope you're ok and your days not been too bad Greg :-)

Sherlock said...

I hate him and I still think I should get to kick him.

Greg Lestrade said...

Just ignore him, Kiddo. He doesn't matter.

AnonyBob - I take it more that he hasn't got any new work worth showing because he's too lazy to do any.

pandabob said...

That's a great way to look at it Greg :-) you're kind of amazing ya know :-)

He's really not worth your thoughts never mind the energy it takes to hate him Sherlock!

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't really know how to take it. Think that way is the best option.

pandabob said...

you're right it is :-D

How's your evening? relaxing and quiet or Sherlock filled? ;-)

Jo said...

Sorry Greg. I just thought you should know. I don't even know why. Just seemed like, well, just seemed like you should.

Sherlock, yeah, if you ever have the misfortune to meet him, you should kick him. I mean, unless John or Greg says you shouldn't. You should listen to them.

Greg, yes, a show! And it's going well - really well. :)

Anonymous said...

I had not heard about the funds being donated, Lestrade. That's a really lovely thing for you Brits to do.

Sherlock, if you would, please accept my thanks on behalf of all Londoners, which I extend on behalf of all Americans. I'm not sure what you should do to let everyone know that we're thankful, but I'm sure you'll think of something.

And of course I hope that London stays as peaceful as possible tomorrow, and that everyone has a good run, and that everyone else has a good time cheering them.

What an awesome video about hexaflexagons! I remember my dad showing them to me when i was a kid. He thought it would be a great way to tile a floor, then instead of cleaning just step on a pedal in the corner to flex all the tiles at once, over to a clean surface. ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

That would be fantastic!

Greg Lestrade said...

We do already have a self cleaning floor for half the year though, Danger - called The Dogs. Food barely even hits the floor before being eaten.
